CBS Records releases an LP of selections from Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, one of the earliest fully-digitally-recorded albums of any kind, soundtrack or otherwise. Thanks mainly to Goldsmith’s energetic main title, the album becomes a best-seller; many fans start to regard the music as the best part of the movie. Two reissues follow, culminating in a fan-pleasing 2012 release of the complete score.

The second disc is not part of the soundtrack, but instead provides the first-ever CD pressing of the 1976 spoken-word album Inside Star Trek, featuring recorded live appearances by Gene Roddenberry, William Shatner, Isaac Asimov and others. This set is billed as the “20th anniversary edition” of the soundtrack.

Veteran television and film composer Jerry Goldsmith dies at the age of 75, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Known to genre fans and soundtrack listeners for an almost countless number of classic scores, his works range from Planet Of The Apes to Logan’s Run to The Omen to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and beyond. His television work includes the themes for such TV series as The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Perry Mason, The Waltons, and of course Star Trek: Voyager. His work earned 17 Oscar nominations, including a win for 1976’s The Omen, and five Emmy Awards (including one for Voyager). He began his classical music studies at the age of six, and studied under legendary composer Miklos Rozsa, eventually getting into the business as a typist in CBS’ music department and then beginning his career by creating music for CBS Radio Workshop, the music for which was usually performed live during broadcast. He then moved on to episodic TV work, including The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Playhouse 90, Thriller, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Amazing Stories, and many others.

Varese Sarabande releases a limited edition CD of the soundtrack from the 1971 science fiction sequel Escape From The Planet Of The Apes, the third movie in the series and the second to be scored by Jerry Goldsmith (this time in an unexpectedly jazzy style). As it is also the only unreleased score from a Planet Of The Apes movie, it sells out quickly.
Soundtrack specialty label La-La Land Records releases a limited edition 2-CD set featuring – for the first time – the entirety of Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. For the first time, the complete score is presented, including alternate takes and arrangements. The limited edition of 5,000 sells out in four months, and the album later gets an unlimited reissue with slightly different cover artwork on the Intrada label.
Film Score Monthly releases a remastered and complete 2-CD edition of Jerry Goldsmith‘s soundtrack from the 1984 movie Gremlins, including related singles such as Peter Gabriel’s “Out Out”.

Soundtrack specialty label La-La Land Records releases a long-awaited 3-CD set featuring – for the first time – the entirety of Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Including spin-off singles (such as Shaun Cassidy’s infamous vocal version of the Ilia theme), unused music from an early draft of the score, and extensive liner notes, half of the set’s limited print run of 10,000 copies sells out within days, forcing the label to ask customers to wait for the rest of the copies to arrive at their warehouse.

On “First Contact Day”, La-La Land Records releases Star Trek Collection: The Final Frontier, a 4-CD box set collecting frequently-requested and previously unreleased music from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as premiering new recordings of unused Jerry Goldsmith music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The label claims this is their final Star Trek CD release, which proves to be somewhat inaccurate.
