Wonder Woman Meets Baroness von Gunther

Wonder WomanMajor Steve Trevor is implicated in a series of sabotage incidents that have set the American war effort back signficantly. Steve is determined to clear his name, as is his new secretary, Navy Yeoman Diana Prince. What Steve doesn’t know is that Diana is Wonder Woman in disguise, and she repeatedly comes to the rescue as his attempts to clear his name put him in ever greater danger. All signs point toward a captured Nazi Baroness being the prime suspect behind the attempts to tar Major Trevor with the brush of treason, but how can she frame him while she’s under lock and key?

Wonder WomanCast: Lynda Carter (Diana Prince / Wonder Woman), Lyle Waggoner (Major Steve Trevor), Richard Eastham (General Blankenship), Beatrice Colen (Etta Candy), Christine Belford (Baroness Paula Von Gunther), Edmund Gilbert (Warden), Ed Griffith (Hanson), Christian Juttner (Tommy), Bradford Dillman (Arthur Deal III), Jude Farese (Guard #1), Cletus Young (Guard #2), Ruth Warshawsky (Woman), John Brandon (Sergeant Stransky)

Wonder WomanNotes: Not only does the warden’s son, Tommy, have a Sherlock Holmes fixation, but he also seems to have no curfew and unlimited access to a top-security federal penitentiary during wartime. This was one of two hour-long specials ordered by ABC after the pilot, though these specials are now retroactively considered part of the first season (which technically didn’t begin until the fall of 1976). Richard Eastham takes over the role of General Blankenship for the remainder of the first season.

Beauty On Parade

Wonder WomanA string of sabotage incidents at Fort Russell, Maryland, a vital point in the supply chain for the U.S. war effort, points toward a high-level security breach. Major Trevor believes that a top-secret project is the target, and he and Diana quickly realize that a traveling beauty contest – supposedly to raise the morale of American troops – could be providing perfect cover for the saboteurs. Diana goes undercover, joining the beauty contest, but it’s almost too late before she and Trevor realize that the secret project isn’t the target. President Eisenhower, due to arrive soon at Fort Russell, is the target, and they may be too late to stop someone from assassinating him.

The Feminum Mystique – Part 1

Wonder WomanMajor Trevor and Diana are present when Nazi agents attempt to hijack an experimental fighter plane, the XPJ-1. Unknown to everyone except Trevor and General Blankenship, the XPJ-1 can be destroyed by remote control; while they see to that, Diana transforms into Wonder Woman and rounds up other Nazis operating under cover at the airfield. Some of the Nazis, including Captain Radl, witness Wonder Woman in action – specifically, her bullet-deflecting bracelets. Diana is amazed when her younger sister, Drusilla, is waiting for her at her apartment, bearing a message from their mother to return to Paradise Island. Diane introduces a disguised Drusilla to General Blankenship, who offers her a tour of Valley Forge, a destination that the General and Drusilla never reach thanks to Captain Radl. Drusilla transforms into a new guise – Wonder Girl – to try to save General Blankenship, but she becomes a hostage instead.

Wonder WomanNotes: This is the first TV appearance for a 21-year-old Debra Winger, whose first movie appearance had debuted in theaters only days earlier. Though this first appearance of Wonder Girl would seem like it has “spinoff” written all over it, Drusilla would make only one further appearance after this two-parter; this was probably for the best for Winger’s career, as she would go on to be nominated three times for the Oscar for Best Lead Actress just a few years later, starting with 1983’s An Officer And A Gentleman.

But his fellow Nazis are already planning to recapture him before he can talk, and they’ve prepared for any interference from Wonder Woman by training a giant gorilla to react to her with hostile aggression on sight. The Pluto File

Wonder WomanWord reaches Washington that a mercenary known internationally as “the Falcon” has arrived in America, either to stop or to steal the word of Professor Warren, who had devised a way to artificially induce earthquakes – an ability that, when weaponized, could end World War II in mere days. But for such a renowned hired gun, the Falcon is remarkably easy to track: his most recent stop was in India, where he unwittingly became a carrier of bubonic plague, leaving a trail of infected victims in his wake. Judgment From Outer Space – Part 1

Wonder WomanA UFO lands just outside of Washington, bearing Andros, a visitor from a peaceful league of alien worlds. As humans grows closer to the secret of splitting the atom and taking its first steps into space, these other worlds are becoming uneasy that the people of Earth will export war to the rest of space. Andros has been sent to survey Earth to see if the human race is worthy of survival, and he’s not impressed with the welcome he receives from Washington. A Nazi spy posing as a Swedish reporter alerts the Axis to Andros’ presence, and capturing him – and harnessing his power over such natural forces as weather – becomes a top priority. Andros has found a kindred spirit in Wonder Woman, who is also an outsider in human society, but when he is kidnapped by the Nazis, she may be powerless to convince Andros’ people not to destroy Earth.

Wonder WomanNotes: Written by Stephen Kandel (who brought the character of Harry Mudd to classic Star Trek), this two-parter is top-heavy with science fiction royalty. Tim O’Connor had already appeared in The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone, and Search, but was still two years away from his signature genre role as Dr. Huer in Buck Rogers In The 25th Century. Vic Perrin could be heard in every episode of The Outer Limits as the control voice instructing viewers not to adjust their televisions. Janet MacLachlan guest starred in the original Star Trek and The Six Million Dollar Man. Scott Hylands appeared in Earth II and Project UFO, and would go on to guest star on The X-Files before landing a regular role in the 21st century reboot of V.

Despite Argentina’s official neutrality in the war, Moreno has quietly promised to hand the formula over to the United States. But German spies have also learned of the formula, and an undercover team of Nazis arrives in Buenos Aires at the same time – with intelligence that’s so up-to-date that they know Trevor is there for the same reason. Some of the Nazis quickly make their presence known, and Wonder Woman appears to fight them off. Wonder Woman In Hollywood

At the same time, Drusilla is sent from Paradise Island to summon Diana for an important anniversary celebration among the Amazons, but delivering the message is no simple matter. Someone is trying to kidnap some of Trevor’s co-stars, who also happen to be war heroes, and studio boss Mark Bremer seems remarkably unconcerned about what’s going on…because he’s a German agent planning to take Trevor and his fellow war heroes back to Berlin for trial. Wonder WomanNotes: This is the final World War II-era Wonder Woman TV episode, and as such it’s the last we see of Richard Eastham as General Blankenship and Beatrice Colen as Etta Candy. Technically, it’s also the last time we see Major Steve Trevor, but fear not, the second season – set in the 1970s, contemporary with the show’s airdates – introduces us to American intelligence agent Steve Trevor, who looks exactly like his father. This is also the second and final appearance of Debra Winger as Drusilla, and is loaded with some extremely young familiar faces, such as Robert Hays (Airplane!, Wonder WomanStarman) and Barry Van Dyke (Galactica: 1980, Diagnosis Murder). The first season finale also marks the end of Wonder Woman on ABC; though the shift to the 1970s era would probably have happened anyway, ABC’s cold feet at renewing the chronically expensive series gave CBS time to step in and outbid them.

The Return Of Wonder Woman

Wonder WomanAmerican intelligence agent Steve Trevor convenes an airborne meeting of top nuclear experts to discuss the threat of a reclusive madman gaining access to atomic technology. As it turns out, that madman is already aware of the meeting, and has placed one of his own men aboard to take over. An anesthetic gas is released aboard the plane, knocking nearly everyone out instantly; Trevor manages to pull the saboteur’s gas mask off, meaning that no one is left awake aboard the plane, which goes down near the Bermuda Triangle…on Paradise Island.

Having returned to Paradise Island after World War II, Diana hasn’t aged a day, despite the fact that more than thirty years have passed since the war. Diana is stunned to see Trevor – who bears a strong resemblance to his father, the late Major Steve Trevor – and the truth of what happened aboard the plane is quickly discovered. With the freedom and safety of the world once again at stake, Diana elects to leave her fellow Amazons and return to America, again assuming the identity of Diana Prince and setting herself up as Steve Trevor’s assistant. And almost as soon as Diana is back in the United States, she has to become her alter ego, Wonder Woman, to defeat agents of the mad genius who tried to wreck Trevor’s original mission. With spies everywhere, Dr. Solano is now aware of Wonder Woman, and decides to turn his nuclear and robotic expertise toward setting a trap with an adversary that can defeat her once and for all.

Notes: Effectively a re-piloting of Wonder Woman for its new network home on CBS, this episode does acknowledge the first season with a couple of Wonder Womanvery brief clips of the WWII-era Steve Trevor, but other than that could be watched cold by a new viewer. The title of the series is amended to “The New Adventures of Wonder Woman”, with the lyrics of the theme song changed to remove references specific to the first season, though the vocal version of that song was now on borrowed time and would be dropped by the end of 1977, along with the “comics panels” opening credits.
