Battlestar Galactica (New Series) Season 1

33

Battlestar GalacticaFor an entire week, the Cylons have attacked the Colonial fleet every 33 minutes. Every time, a Cylon base ship appears and launches fighters and missiles, and every time, the fleet barely escapes – usually with more casualties than the last time. Baltar continues to experience visits from the Cylon woman known as Number Six, visits only he can see or feel, whether he’s aboard Galactica or Colonial One. It’s while he’s aboard the President’s ship that Baltar overhears that another Colonial scientist, claiming to have information on how the Cylons overcame Caprica’s defenses, is requesting an audience with the President. When he learns this, Baltar’s encounters with Number Six take on a new urgency, and she implies that this “problem” can be taken care of – with a little bit of Cylon intervention. The ship carrying that scientist doesn’t make the next FTL jump on time – and the ships of the fleet, and Baltar, get a temporary reprieve. But when the Olympic Carrier does reappear, the Cylons are right behind it…and even though the Olympic Carrier’s complement of passengers is over 1,300, Adama must weigh those lives against saving the rest of the fleet.

Season 1 Regular Cast: Edward James Olmos (Commander Adama), Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin), Katie Sackhoff (Lt. Starbuck), Jamie Bamber (Captain Apollo), James Callis (Dr. Gaius Baltar), Tricia Helfer (Number Six), Grace Park (Lt. Boomer)

Notes: Despite many a rumor to the contrary, there is no relation between actresses Grace Park (Galactica’s Lt. Boomer) and Linda Park (Star Trek: Enterprise’s Ensign Hoshi Sato), though both are of Korean descent. Production designer Richard Hudolin has a knack for giving SF franchises a new look – not only did he work on numerous episodes of Stargate SG-1, but he was also responsible for the striking redesign of the TARDIS for the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie. The airdate above reflects the episode’s U.S. premiere; it premiered a few months earlier on the UK Sky One satellite channel.

Water

Battlestar GalacticaLt. Boomer goes to CPO Tyrol with an unusual problem – she recently found herself inexplicably drenched with water, and in possession of a case from munitions which carried several explosives and detonators. Galactica conducts a routine water tanking maneuver with one of the smaller Colonial ships during a visit by the President. But the transfer becomes less than routine when a massive explosion rocks Galactica’s water tanks, venting well over half of the fleet’s water supply into space. Adama and President Roslin launch an investigation, and the missing explosives from munitions quickly come to light. Tyrol is careful to avoid mentioning anything he knows that might implicate Boomer, but her own increasingly nervous behavior may give her away before the evidence does. Baltar also betrays his own nervousness while serving on the investigation panel, as the President orders him to look for a way to detect any Cylons disguised as members of the ship’s crew; despite that alarming possibility, Adama and the President opt to keep that information from the rest of the fleet for now. A desperate search for a new source of water begins, though Boomer’s participation in the survey may spell its doom. And on Caprica, now occupied by the Cylons, lone Galactica crewmember Helo – left behind in the evacuation of the planet’s civilians – discovers he’s not alone…because Lt. Boomer is there with him too.

Gemini

Stargate SG-1An attempt to open the SGC gate is halted before transit can occur due to an unusual security concern – the ID code used to open the gate is Carter’s, but it’s also four months out of date. When a MALP is sent through to investigate, what it finds on the other side is Carter – a Replicator Carter created by Fifth. The Replicator Carter claims that she has escaped Fifth’s control and has come to warn her human counterpart of a new breed of Replicator immune to the disruptor, and Carter decides to let her through. Once on the base, the Replicator shares with Carter her memories of Fifth’s torturous indoctrination sessions, forcing the Carter clone to kill her teammates in holographic simulations. Carter warily trusts the Replicator to help find a way to destroy the almost-undetectable human Replicators, but Teal’c and O’Neill aren’t so confident. And while the Carter clone does help to fend off the Replicator ship on a heading for Earth, it turns out that the skepticism about her mission and motives wasn’t entirely unjustified.

The Eye

Stargate AtlantisThe Genii have seized control of the city, and only McKay’s fast talking keeps himself and Dr. Weir alive. McKay keeps talking long enough to delay Kolya’s persistent threats to kill all of his hostages, and in that time Major Sheppard begins a stealthy offensive to disable Atlantis and its defenses to make the city a less attractive target for the Genii; when the stargate is opened, Sheppard puts up a shield that results in the death of nearly all of the incoming Genii reinforcements, totaling nearly sixty soldiers including Kolya’s own son. But even if Sheppard succeeds in convincing Kolya and his troops that they should retreat before Atlantis is destroyed by the approaching storm, can he undo his sabotage in time to restore the city’s shields and prevent that ruse from becoming reality?

Bastille Day

Battlestar GalacticaWith a source of water located in the ice caps of a nearby moon, replenishing Galactica’s water supply will be a more daunting task than expected, requiring a crew of at least a thousand workers. Commander Adama proposes using men from the Colonial fleet’s prison ship as a labor force, but President Roslin balks at the thought of anything that could be construed as using slave labor. She sends Apollo to the prison ship Astral Queen to offer points toward amnesty for any prisoners willing to help, but only one man speaks out – Tom Zarek, a political prisoner with a controversial past. Some, such as Galactica bridge officer Dualla, consider him a terrorist, while others follow Zarek’s insistence that he is a prisoner of conscience. What everyone can agree on is that Zarek is a charismatic leader, and he already has control of the Astral Queen. A quick rebellion turns the visiting Galactica officers and what few prison wardens haven’t been swayed by Zarek into hostages. Zarek, insisting that President Roslin was not democratically elected and therefore has no constitutional claim to the office of President, demands that elections be held immediately. Roslin refuses to negotiate with Zarek, and Adama assigns a team of snipers led by Starbuck to retake the Astral Queen. But Apollo may be able to reach another solution, something that gives everyone – even Zarek – what they want to resolve the crisis.

Prometheus Unbound

Stargate SG-1Daniel has been ready to join the Prometheus mission to Atlantis for some time, but O’Neill flatly refuses to let him go, insisting that he needs Daniel at the SGC. But both of them are surprised when General Hammond pays a surprise visit and makes it very clear that the decision has been taken out of O’Neill’s hands: Daniel will be joining the Atlantis mission, at the insistence of the Prometheus’ commander…who just happens to be Hammond himself. Between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies, the Promtheus picks up a distress call, supposedly from a human, and responds, finding a Goa’uld ship instead. Once many of the crew are aboard the other ship as a landing party, Prometheus is ripe for a takeover. A single supersoldier takes the Prometheus easily, but Daniel manages to remain aboard, discovering that the armed hijacker is a con artist named Vala Mal Doran. Daniel retakes the Prometheus, but Vala has locked the ship’s controls on a heading of her own – she was hoping the Prometheus’ firepower would look convincing enough to help her conduct a shady deal for a shipment of naquadah. Even with Vala in the brig, Daniel is left with little choice but to conduct the deal himself. Vala insists that her help will be needed, and when the deal turns out to be a disastrous double-cross, even her help may not be enough.

The Defiant One

Stargate AtlantisSheppard, McKay and two scientists explore one of the other planets in Atlantis’ solar system in a jumper, finding an enormous but dormant weapons platform in orbit, possibly the Ancients’ last line of defense for Atlantis. They find a crashed Wraith ship on the planet’s surface, along with a startlingly well-preserved dead Wraith on board – one which seems to have been fed upon by another Wraith, a behavior that hasn’t been observed before. They also find a chamber with hundreds of coccooned human bodies – a sign that other Wraiths may be nearby, stockpiling food for reasons unknown. Sheppard takes this as a sign that it’s time to return to the jumper, but it’s too late – one of the junior scientists becomes the Wraith’s latest victim, and the other is captured and coccooned. Sheppard and McKay find their surviving team member, and Sheppard arms McKay and leaves him to guard the wounded man. In the meantime, Sheppard races to return to the undefended jumper, only to find that the Wraith has already discovered it – and its weapons. Sheppard can’t call for help, and even when Dr. Weir becomes worried enough to send Lt. Ford and Teyla in charge of a backup team, help is over 15 hours away.

Act Of Contrition

Battlestar GalacticaAn impromptu celebration ensues on the hangar deck when one of the pilots makes his 1,000th successful landing. During the celebration, though, a loose strap on a munitions rack leads to the tragic loss of several of Galactica’s most experienced pilots. After the dead are buried, Adama instructs Starbuck to begin training new pilots immediately. The usually uninhibited Starbuck doesn’t seem to be looking forward to the challenge, however – the very thin field of candidates has absolutely no combat flight experience, if they have any flight experience at all; when she asks if someone else could handle the training, Starbuck learns that the only other qualified flight instructors in the remaining Colonial fleet don’t have combat experience either. Adama makes it clear that despite the death of his son Zak – who died in an accident in a Viper fighter after Starbuck passed him for basic flight training – he trusts Starbuck to shape Galactica’s next group of fighter pilots. But Apollo forces a revelation to the surface that may cost Starbuck the trust she has earned from Adama.

It’s Good To Be King

Stargate SG-1As the influence of the System Lords spreads, the Tok’ra advise Earth to evacuate some of their least-defended planets. When SG-1 arrives at one of these worlds, however, they’re not exactly greeted with open arms – in fact, they’re captured and taken to the locals’ king. That king, however, turns out to be Harry Maybourne, the team’s old adversary from NID. Maybourne has achieved his new status by deciphering the runes on a nearby obelisk, which appear to predict future events – and naturally, after making a few accurate “predictions” based on his translations, Maybourne was elevated to royalty by the locals. Daniel does some deciphering of his own, and what he discovers leads the team to a timeship that once belonged to the Ancients. Even more troubling is a rune that Maybourne has already managed to read – a rune indicating that an imminent Goa’uld attack could overrun the planet and its people. O’Neill arrives to assess the situation, and decides that the timeship should be destroyed and the people – including their “king” – evacuated. But the Goa’uld arrive ahead of schedule, and they learn of the obelisk from one of Maybourne’s subjects, leading them to the timeship. O’Neill and Carter get the ship spaceborne in a hurry, forcing Daniel and Teal’c – and Maybourne – to fend for themselves.

Hot Zone

Stargate AtlantisThe mysterious death of two team members after they report seeing something unusual forces Dr. Weir to order a medical quarantine of the entire city – everyone is to remain where they are, including McKay’s team, now trapped near whatever killed their teammates. Sheppard doesn’t like the idea of sitting still, and overrides Weir’s authority when McKay reports that one of his more nervous surviving team members has fled into the city, breaking the quarantine – and possibly spreading the infection. Every member of McKay’s team who reports seeing a dark shadow approaching them dies soon afterward. The city begins sealing sections of itself off, as if sensing that the infection has indeed spread. McKay and Beckett determine that the growing plague isn’t of Wraith origin – and the latest person who’s seen the shadow that precedes yet another death is McKay himself.

You Can’t Go Home Again

Battlestar GalacticaAfter narrowly surviving a chaotic confrontation defending her pilot trainees from a Cylon surprise attack, Starbuck crash-lands on a moon with a poisonous atmosphere and gale-force winds. Adama launches an all-out search for Starbuck, who has been injured and has less than two days of oxygen. When civilian ships are called out of formation into the search, and even the combat patrol that protects the fleet’s defenseless vessels are called away to take part, President Roslin begins to wonder if Commander Adama’s judgement isn’t clouded by his personal feelings. A call to Apollo, who she relies on as her military liaison, doesn’t reassure her, and when the search continues even after the countdown runs out for Starbuck’s oxygen supply, the President makes her feelings known more forcefully. Meanwhile, on the moon, Starbuck finds a ship that’s in far better shape than her Viper – but it happens to be the Cylon ship that collided with her in the first place, and if its hull is intact, its occupant may be as well. And on Caprica, Helo finds that a shelter where he and Boomer have been hiding isn’t as secure as he thought.

Full Alert

Stargate SG-1Kinsey comes to O’Neill with a warning about two threats: the Trust, and the increasingly suspicious Russian government. He warns that Russia feels that the United States isn’t holding up its end of the technology and information-sharing agreement that brought a new stargate to the SGC after the destruction of the original. And the Trust wants to meet with Kinsey, which is suspicious at best after his hasty expulsion from the organization. O’Neill isn’t exactly receptive to Kinsey’s plea for help, and instead intends to send him to meet with the Trust – fully wired for surveillance. Moments into the meeting, the signal is jammed, and before Colonel Carter and the rest of SG-1 can intervene and save Kinsey, he and the agents of the Trust vanish. Colonel Chekov arrives from Russia to try to negotiate with O’Neill, bringing news that the Russians believe the senior officials of America’s government have become Goa’uld hosts. Teal’c is assigned to the Promtheus, which lifts off to patrol near-Earth space for any sign of an imminent attack, while Daniel is sent to Russia to try to negotiate with their government. But when Daniel uncovers signs that the Russian President may be a Goa’uld host, mutual distrust escalates dangerously between the two countries – along with the level of military alert on both sides.

Sanctuary

Stargate AtlantisSheppard, Teyla, Ford and McKay are on a routine survey mission aboard one of Atlantis’ jumpers, when an attack group of Wraith Darts finds and pursues them. But just when they think they’re about to be destroyed, a blinding burst of energy emanates from a nearby planet, destroying the Darts – and leaving the jumper untouched. Sheppard decides that this force merits investigation (and the jumper needs repairs), but on the planet, they find only a primitive, spiritual people who know nothing of the Wraith or the weapon that destroyed them, to say nothing of the technology that could have built such a weapon. Sheppard’s pleas to relocate refugees to this world falls on deaf ears, so he invites the high priestess to tour Atlantis for herself. McKay, on the other hand, is suspicious of the people of Proculus, and believes they’re more advanced than they appear to be – and when she touches a console and activates it, revealing she has the Ancient gene, it only intensifies his suspicion.

Tigh is barely able to hustle Adama to safety, but others around them aren’t so lucky. Adama decides the time has come to go public with the news that the Cylons can take human form, against the advice of both Tigh and President Roslin. He assigns the ship’s Master at Arms to begin an inquiry, and she insists on having a free hand in the investigation. Citizen Joe

Stargate SG-1An armed man barges into O’Neill’s home, accusing him of ruining his life. Seven years ago, this small-town barber picked up a mysterious object at a yard sale, an item which gave him vivid, recurring visions of SG-1’s exploits. Joe tells his son bedtime stories about Colonel Jack O’Neill, Teal’c and their comrades, and tells his customers at the barber shop an endless series of tales too. Finally, at his wife’s somewhat irritated urging, he begins writing these stories down and submitting them to science fiction magazines. When he sees the premiere of a new TV show called “Wormhole X-Treme,” Joe sues the show’s producers for stealing his ideas, but nothing comes of it and the show is cancelled after one episode. Joe continues his compulsive writing until his family leaves him and he loses his shop and his home. Now Joe wants his life back – not that anyone can figure out how to do this without blowing the SGC’s cover.
