Nanarchy

Red DwarfLeft to deal with the universe single-handedly, Lister is having a bit of trouble adjusting, and Kryten has to restrain himself from doing everything for him. Kochanski suggests using Kryten’s supply of internal self-repair nanobots to perform reconstructive surgery on Lister, but Kryten’s nanobots mutnied a long time ago. If the nanobots could be found, they could rearrange matter on the atomic level, but the last time Kryten remembers having them was on the mission to investigate the S.S.S. Esperanto hundreds of years ago – which also happens to be when the crew lost track of Red Dwarf.

These events are all linked, but not in a way that any of them can imagine.

Scorpion – Part I

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate 50984.3: As Voyager approaches the edge of Borg space, they discover a narrow passage which is empty of Borg activity and decide to try to thread their way through it in an effort to avoid confrontation. But they suddenly realize that the reason for the lack of Borg activity is the invasion of another species which apparently has no trouble at all defeating the Borg cubes with bio-ships impervious to assimilation. A Voyager away team visits a dying cube ship which has one of the alien vessels attached to it. The crew manage to download the Borg’s information on the new species, named “8472,” but Harry Kim is attacked by the pilot of the bio-ship and is given a virulent infection which begins to devour him from the inside out. While Ensign Kim fights for his life, a conflicted Janeway grapples with the decision of either guiding her crew through the dangerous Borg territory which is lined with a new mortal enemy or turning around and ending all hope of ever getting home.

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate 50975.2: In order to stop the Dominion from sending caravans to Cardassia, Starfleet authorizes Sisko to place a minefield at the entrance to the wormhole. With war now imminent, a Bajor/Dominion non-aggression pact is signed with Sisko’s endorsement, to ensure Bajor’s survival. Rom and Leeta are married, and Worf and Dax become engaged, while Odo and Kira agree to set aside their relationship for now. When the Dominion attacks, the station must fight them off until the Defiant finishes setting the minefield – but all may already be lost.

Gigashadow

LexxIn the wake of Kai’s killing of His Divine Shadow, the essence of the Shadow returns to the Cluster and instigates a genocidal slaughter of the billions of humans living there. The flesh and muscle of those killed is used to feed a processing plant which is creating a gigantic host brain that will house the Shadow for all time: the Gigashadow.

Aboard the Lexx, Zev is desperately seeking a way to save Kai – his supply of protoblood is running critically low, and he’s fast running out of options. Zev convinces Stan to return Lexx to the Light Universe via the fractal core, but when they find that the Cluster has been left barren, Zev’s hopes fall – as does Kai, suffering from frequent blackouts due to a lack of protoblood. Waiting in orbit – and unaware that almost everyone in the Cluster has been slaughtered – Stanley broadcasts a signal in a desperate attempt to clear his name, and attracts attention of the worst kind. On the Cluster, all hints point toward the coming of the Gigashadow, both as an apocalyptic event in the near future and as the one source of protoblood remaining. But when the Gigashadow arises, even larger than the Lexx and invulnerable to the ship’s weaponry, how can Zev stop the beginning of the end – or keep Kai from dying forever?

Babylon 5Notes: Rushed into production as the first episode shot under a new contract with cable channel TNT, Deconstruction was designed to segue into the fifth and final season which would be airing on cable, though it was aired as the final episode of Babylon 5’s syndicated run under Warner Bros.’ collapsing PTEN network. If TNT hadn’t rescued the show, the already-produced Sleeping In Light would have aired here instead, wrapping up the series; as it was, that episode remained in the can until the end of Babylon 5’s TNT run. Only part of the regular cast appears in this episode, which was shot after the departure of Claudia Christian over contractual disagreements with the producers.

Within The Serpent’s Grasp

Stargate SG-1In the wake of Senator Kinsey’s visit, General Hammond is preparing to shut down the stargate facility. O’Neill is worried that this could leave Earth open to a devastating attack, even though he still isn’t completely sold on Daniel’s story of a Goa’uld attack witnessed in an alternate reality. But despite his misgivings about the specifics of Daniel’s story, O’Neill is unwilling to stand by helplessly. SG-1 embarks on an unauthorized mission, disobeying the orders of both General Hammond and the President. They find themselves not just behind enemy lines, but aboard the gigantic Goa’uld starship which is already underway to launch an attack on Earth. Apophis has sent his own son – actually Daniel and O’Neill’s young friend Skaara, inhabited by a symbiont – to lead the attack, but when Teal’c and O’Neill try to get Skaara to rebel against the creature controlling his mind, SG-1 is quickly exposed. O’Neill and Teal’c are both sentenced to death, and even if they do escape, the Goa’uld ships are mere hours away from a defenseless Earth.

Hope and Fear

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate 51978.2: On a routine supply stop, Paris and Neelix meet Arturis, an alien with a gift for translation. As Arturis hitches a brief ride aboard Voyager, Janeway decides to let Arturis try to decipher the encrypted message Starfleet sent through the Hirogen communications array several months earlier. Arturis makes quick work of the message, revealing a set of coordinates and a slightly garbled message from Admiral Hayes of Starfleet, detailing a new hope for Voyager’s crew to return home. But it is only when a wary Janeway tries deciphering the message on her own, while trying to convince Seven of Nine to return to the Alpha Quadrant with the crew, that the origins of the mysterious Starfleet experimental ship Dauntless are uncovered. This new ship, left unmanned for Voyager’s crew to use, is not on a mission of mercy, but a mission of vengeance.

The Tears Of The Prophets

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate not given: Starfleet has finally decided to go on the offensive in the war against the Dominion, and Sisko is chosen to lead the task force that will be sent to attack the Chin’taka system, a “weak spot” in Cardassian space. This he does, despite a warning vision from the Prophets. Meanwhile, Dukat has returned to Cardassia with what he claims is the key to victory. He breaks an ancient Bajoran relic, and becomes possessed by the pagh wraith inside. The results will be devastating to the Federation and Dominion alike, as well as to the crew of Deep Space Nine, who will lose someone very dear to them.

Notes: This was Terry Farrell’s final episode as a member of Deep Space Nine’s regular cast. Farrell opted not to return when she felt that the offered salary was not commensurate with her years of experience on the show, and tried to persuade the writers to reassign Dax to a new mission rather than killing the character off.

Only The Good…

Red DwarfRed Dwarf rescues a life pod with a sole survivor and an unwelcome visitor – a shapeshifting, corrosive microscopic life form which begins eating away at the ship, though no one realizes this just yet. After Lister tricks him into embarassing Kochanski, Kryten vows revenge, planting a fellow prisoner’s secret stash of home-brewed booze in Lister and Rimmer’s cell. But that prisoner’s response – basically a death threat – requires a new escape attempt. En route to steal a ship, they see the corroded life pod, and Lister decides that Captain Hollister must be informed of the imminent danger. Hollister rewards the prisoners by thanking them for giving Red Dwarf’s officers and crew time to escape…and then announces that all prisoners will be left behind to die.

The End Of The Universe

LexxThe universe has just over 93 hours left, and Mantrid’s drones are now reproducing themselves by the billion. Stanley wants to experiment on the drone captured for Brizon in a last-ditch effort to fight back. But Stan’s experiment is cut short when more drone arms appear inside Lexx, trapping him and Xev. The drones even attack Lyekka’s dormant pod on the flight deck, forcing her to awaken. After Stan connects the captured arm to 790, the robot head goes to rescue Xev. 790’s success in fighting off the Mantrid drones inspires a new strategy – Xev asks him to build duplicates of himself and attach them to the remains of drones destroyed by Kai and Lyekka – and the new 790 drones concentrate not on destroying the Mantrid drones, but on capturing them to replicate further 790 drones. But even with this new tactic, Mantrid’s drones outnumber 790’s a million to one – and the collapse of the light universe has progressed too far to be stopped.

Equinox

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate not given: To the amazement of Janeway and Voyager’s crew, a distress signal is received from the Federation starship Equinox. The Equinox, commanded by Captain John Ransom, was dragged into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker months ahead of Voyager. Ransom and his crew have been besieged by a race of subspace aliens which can only enter real space for a few seconds – but Ransom points out that these aliens can cause a considerable amount of damage in very little time, and the heavily-damaged Equinox seems to bear out his story. Tuvok and Seven detect several odd readings, indicating alien attempts to penetrate the combined shields of Voyager and the Equinox. Ransom repeatedly denies Voyager’s crew access to the engineering section of the Equinox, and it is only when Janeway secretly beams the Doctor over that a horrifying discovery is made. Ransom and his crew have sped their journey considerably by capturing and killing the subspace creatures and using their remains as an energy source. The aliens’ attacks are revenge for the numerous deaths they have suffered at the hands of Ransom’s crew, and when the Equinox crew force their way back to their ship and resume their bloody path toward the Alpha Quadrant, the aliens target Voyager’s crew instead… beginning with Captain Janeway.

What You Leave Behind

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate 52947.9: The final assault of the Alpha Quadrant allies against the Dominion begins, as the uprising on Cardassia grows. However, Damar and his people pay a heavy price when the Jem’Hadar begin destroying Cardassian cities and exterminating the population. Damar, Kira, and Garak are captured, but saved from execution by fellow revolutionaries. Damar is killed in the effort to storm Dominion headquarters, and Kira and Garak manage to seize control, killing the eighth and last Weyoun in the process, and taking the Female Changeling prisoner. Meanwhile, the tide of the space battle turns when the Cardassian ships begin firing on their erstwhile Dominion allies.

The final end of the war comes when Odo joins Kira and Garak, and links with the Female Changeling, curing her and obtaining her agreement to sign a peace treaty and be tried for her crimes. In exchange, Odo promises to rejoin the Great Link and heal his people, hoping that in time he can teach them to reconcile with the solids.

On Bajor, Dukat, whose sight has returned, has entered the Fire Caves with Winn to release the pagh-wraiths. Winn poisons him as a sacrificial offering, but the wraiths bypass her and possess Dukat’s body instead. Sisko instinctively realizes what is happening and races to the Fire Caves, where in their struggle, he and Dukat fall into the fire, destroying the Text of the Kosst Amojan and sealing the pagh-wraiths in their prison forever. Sisko awakens in the Celestial Temple, where the Prophets tell him that his work is now complete, and that he is now one of them. Kasidy receives a vision from her husband, bidding her goodbye, and promising to return.

Many other goodbyes are exchanged. Garak faces a bittersweet end to his exile. Worf is appointed Federation ambassador to Qo’Nos, and O’Brien leaves to teach engineering at Starfleet Academy. Odo and Kira part on the shores of the Great Link. However, Quark is still serving drinks and making deals at his bar, and Morn still resides on his stool. Bashir and Ezri also remain on the station, as do Nog and Kasidy. And together, Kira and Jake keep watch on the wormhole…

Unimatrix Zero

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate not given: Seven of Nine reports a startling experience during her regeneration cycle, which the Doctor explains away as a dream. Moments after Tom Paris is reinstated to the rank of lieutenant, Voyager receives a distress signal – which goes dead a second later. Tracking the signal to its source, the crew finds a colony built on an asteroid…and destroyed by the Borg.

Seven’s next regeneration cycle finds her in a verdant jungle again, greeted by a familiar man named Axum. He explains that Seven is not dreaming, but has been drawn to a virtual environment known as Unimatrix Zero. One in a million Borg drones has a recessive mutation which allows them to visit Unimatrix Zero while they regenerate. In this environment, the drones have individuality, their original appearance…and no memory of events there once they return to the Collective. But one drone no longer belongs to the Collective. Seven can retain her memory, and she promptly relays this information to Captain Janeway, who sees an opportunity to undermine the Borg once and for all.

Janeway mounts a bold offensive against the nearest Borg vessel, which is a heavily armored tactical ship. She reluctantly brings Tuvok and Torres with her on a mission to infiltrate the Borg ship – a mission which results in the destruction of the Delta Flyer just as its away team beams aboard the cube. But Janeway’s team is quickly overcome – the captain, Tuvok and B’Elanna are all assimilated. Was this part of her plan?

FarscapeThe crew takes their gains from the Shadow Despository to an ice planet that serves as home to the Diagnosan Tacot, a surgeon of great renown that they hope will heal Moya’s burns and remove the chip from Crichton’s brain. The neural clone, however, has gained the ability to assume control of Crichton’s body for periods of time, and exploits the other’s desire to help and trust Crichton to make its escape and signal Scorpius. When Aeryn pursues him, Crichton/Scorpius rams her Prowler, and although she ejects, the seat is damaged. She is unable to break free as the seat crashes into a frozen lake, killing her. She is entombed in Tacot’s cryogenic chamber, along with other recently- and near-deceased specimens that the Daignosan uses for transplant organs. After Aeryn’s funeral, the others ponder their next step. D’Argo plans to propose to Chiana and retire to a farm somewhere, but neither Chiana nor Jothee seem enthused by the idea as they grow closer. Rygel tries to buy his way off planet. Zhaan and Stark choose to stay with Moya, while Crais regrets that Aeryn never joined him aboard Talyn. A shackled and grieving Crichton undergoes the chip removal surgery, which temporarily removes his capacity for speech as well. And that’s when Scorpius himself shows up to collect his goods.
