K-9 Season 1

Angel Of The North

K-9An unusual disturbance in space and time is detected, affecting everything in Gryffen’s lab – everything except K-9. The epicenter of the disturbance is in the northernmost reaches of Canada – near the crashed spacecraft from which Gryffen salvaged the interdimensional transport equipment in his lab. Despite his phobia of setting foot outside his lab, Gryffen contacts the Department and all but begs to take an expedition to Canada, hoping to find the final piece of alien technology that will bring the interdimensional transport under his control, and perhaps even send K-9 home. Inspector Thorne agrees to Gryffen’s request – perhaps too eagerly – and joins the Professor on his journey. K-9 and Starkey decide to go to Canada by other means in case Gryffen needs help. When they learn the identity of the alien race whose technology Gryffen has been researching, everyone will need help.

The Last Precinct

K-9A wave of incidents spreads through London, often involving CCPCs being disabled by a group calling itself the Last Precinct. CCPCs raid Gryffen’s lab, blast K-9 and take hostages, but they’re not looking for evidence – in fact, some of them aren’t CCPCs at all. Two humans remove CCPC uniforms and reveal themselves as members of the Last Precinct: the last London Metro Police officers remaining when the Department relieved all human police of duty to replace them with CCPCs. Pike is also Darius’ father, though the two barely acknowledge one another after years of estrangement. Pike has an ace up his sleeve, however: a computer virus that will put all of the CCPCs in London under his control. But who engineered that virus… and will deploying it actually help his aim of demonstrating the unreliability of CCPCs to the public, or will it only unleash an even more dangerous situation?

Guest Cast: Robyn Moore (Inspector June Turner), Jared Robinsen (Thorne), Chris Betts (Pike), Lloyd Morris (Halloran), Jason McNamara (Green Hand), Josh Norbido (CCPC), Eugen Bekafigo (CCPC), Tyler Rostedt (CCPC), Simon Preston-Barnes (CCPC)

The Last PrecinctNotes: The CCPCs are revealed to be cyborgs – cybernetic organisms – in this episode, and mention is made of cloning centers that produce the CCPCs. Even more menacing is the fact that someone has been integrating alien biotechnology into the latest round of CCPCs cloned. As the CCPC raid on the last police precinct in London happened only two years ago, back when Gryffen’s lab was that police station, it’s reasonable to assume that Gryffen’s occupancy of the building is very recent, despite enough clutter to suggest that he’s been there for years.

Hound Of The Korven

K-9Darius is awakened by Inspector Thorne – a bit of a shock, since Thorne is on Gryffen’s property – who tries to sway Darius’ loyalty with a chance to see how his father is handling a stay in the Department’s virtual reality prison. Thorne’s price for this favor seems simple: he wants a piece of K-9’s circuitry, a piece he claims won’t be missed. And Thorne has something to tempt K-9 into cooperating as well: a memory chip that K-9 is missing.

But the circuit Thorne wants is the regeneration unit that restored K-9 in his new form. Even with his father’s freedom on the line, Darius knows this isn’t an even exchange. K-9 makes the trade anyway, and when he accesses the chip that supposedly contains his missing memory, the trap is sprung: a trojan horse program that takes over K-9’s programming, turning him into a mobile bomb dedicated to taking out an enemy of the Department’s choosing. And it can hardly be a coincidence that a lone Jixen has returned to Earth to find Starkey…

The Sarah Jane AdventuresEncouraged by one of his teachers to take his A-levels early, Luke not only succeeds with flying colors, but is accepted in Oxford at what seems like an alarmingly young age (not taking into account that he’s not entirely human). Suddenly, he’s only days away from moving away from home, but something else is scaring him: repeated visits from an entity that he’s sure is going to try to destroy the world. This man appears only in his nightmares and warns Luke that the boy’s nightmares are feeding the being power. And then one night, Luke discovers that he isn’t just dreaming these encounters: the Nightmare Man is real.

The Nightmare Man – Part 2

The Sarah Jane AdventuresLuke is trapped in the clutches of the Nightmare Man, unable to wake up and unable to keep the being from also trapping Clyde and Rani in their nightmares. Sarah Jane discovers evidence that the Nightmare Man is real, and calls on all of her resources to help Luke and the others wake up. But when Luke, Rani and Clyde throw off the shackles of the Nightmare Man, he decides to stalk a victim whose nightmares must surely be even worse: Sarah Jane herself.

Notes: Luke and K-9 take their leave as series regulars in this episode, with K-9 going to look after Luke at Oxford in the story. Behind the scenes, K-9’s departure was probably necessitated by the fact that, since the last series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, the long-delayed, Australian-produced K-9 spinoff (also featuring the voice of John Leeson) had finally gotten off the ground after many false starts and pre-production roadblocks.

The Sands Of Life

Doctor Who: The Sands Of LifeIn the time vortex, the TARDIS registers the presence of a swarm of life forms numbering into the billions; one of them telepathically contacts Romana as it passes, with its only message being “the sands of life.” The TARDIS materializes on Earth, which is the swarm’s eventual destination. Both newly-elected Earth President Sheridan Moorkurk and a ruthless industrialist named Cuthbert are already aware of the swarm’s approach, and are preparing in their own ways. The approaching swarm has already fouled one of Cuthbert’s R&D projects, so he’s keen to eliminate the creatures, whatever their intention might be, while President Moorkurk quickly learns, in her first day in office, that Cuthbert’s influence runs deep within the government she’s inherited. The Doctor and Romana are captured, and the arrival of two aliens ahead of the swarm arouses more than just a little bit of suspicion. Romana is taken into custody by the military, and General Vincent plans to make use of her ability to commune with the approaching creatures. The Doctor is handed over to Cuthbert, who wants to put the Doctor’s knowledge and intuition to use for his personal gain. And finally, the first of the Laan reaches Earth. A large, whale-like species whose domain is the time vortex, they have some to the Sahara Desert to spawn in the “sands of life.” The birth of each group of Laan pups releases an enormous amount of both kinetic and temporal energy – enough, the Doctor surmises, to do serious damage to Earth. Is Cuthbert right to want to declare war on the Laan?

War Against The Laan

Doctor WhoAfter Cuthbert’s forces capture a live Laan, Cuthbert decides he no longer needs the Doctor’s reluctant expertise, and leaves the Doctor and Romana to their fate – a fate that isn’t as fatal as Cuthbert expects, thanks to Romana’s telepathic rapport with the Laan. The two Time Lords demand an audience with Earth President Sheridan Moonkurk, and the Doctor insists that she put an end to the slaughter. But Cuthbert has plans that he does not intend to bring to a stop – not for any government and not for any life form.

Phantoms Of The Deep

Doctor WhoAs the Doctor, Romana and K-9 continue blazing a random trail through the universe to avoid the Black Guardian’s wrath, Romana is dismayed when the TARDIS once again lands on Earth. The Doctor, seeing that the time machine has materialized in the depths of the Marianas Trench, the deepest point on the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean, is less worried – until the TARDIS is grappled by a mid-21st century submarine on a deep sea expedition. Needless to say, the sub’s crew is astounded to discover a police box on the ocean floor, and they’re even more surprised when time travelers emerge from it. But when the sub encounters what may be a new species never before seen on Earth, the Doctor immediately senses that it is something that doesn’t come from Earth’s oceans. When the Doctor and expedition leader Patricia Sawyer pay a visit to a sunken shipwreck, they find a wide-eyed midshipman who has apparently been kept alive for a century. As they help him escape, something assumes control of K-9 and ejects Romana and another member of the sub crew into the ocean – where they miraculously survive thanks to the technology of the aliens. But who are these visitors from another world, and is their vested interest in the human race entirely benevolent?

The Dalek Contract

Doctor WhoStill concerned about the migration of the Laan, the Doctor tries to follow their trail, and finds himself in the Proxima system; too late, he learns that the TARDIS has not followed the Laan, but has instead tracked down Cuthbert’s Conglomerate headquarters, where Cuthbert is pressing forward with the same illegal experiments that ensnared the Laan before. But this time, Cuthbert is meeting with local resistance on Proxima Major, and he has done a deal with his business associates, the Daleks, to quell that uprising. Romana and K-9 are captured with some of the resistenace fighters, and once the Daleks realize they have companions of the Doctor in their custody, they’re less concerned with being Cuthbert’s subcontractors than with capturing their deadliest foe.

The Final Phase

Doctor WhoTo save Romana and K-9, the Doctor gives in to the Dalek Supreme’s demand that he hand himself over… but naturally, this is part of the Doctor’s plan, and the Dalek saucer sent to collect him winds up under his complete control. Romana and K-9 get a glimpse of Cuthbert’s top-secret R&D project at last: a tear in the fabric of space-time, which Cuthbert has harnessed and turned into a dimensional gateway to explore (and, more likely, exploit) “the glories of the past.” Romana quickly realizes that this is the only reason why the Daleks are cooperating with Cuthbert: they intend to commandeer the gateway for their own purposes. The Daleks converge on Cuthbert’s space station to claim the gateway for themselves, forcing Cuthbert’s private army to join up with the Proximan rebels to fight off their common enemy. The Doctor arrives to make “adjustments” to Cuthbert’s dimensional gateway, over the corrupt businessman’s protests, but the choices on the table are wiping out the Dalek threat… or annihilation for the entire universe, Daleks and all.
