Joyce Byers, convinced that her missing son can communicate with her by influencing electric lights, and gathers every lamp in the house in one room to await further contact. Hopper, running out of places to look for Will, tries to search the grounds of the high-security lab supposedly run by the Department of Energy, only to find that they don’t seem to want him searching there. Will’s friends, with Eleven insisting that Will is still alive, set out to find him, but they manage to be present when Will’s body is found in the water at a nearby quarry. And only Nancy seems to be aware that something has happened to her friend Barb.
