The Occupation

Star Wars: RebelsAfter a distress call from Ryder on Lothal is cut short, Mon Mothma assigns Ezra to return to his home planet to gather intelligence on the strength of Imperial forces there. Hera and the rest of the Ghost crew offer backup, but Mon Mothma warns that she can spare no other resources to help if the mission goes bad. When they arrive, Ezra sees for himself that Lothal and its people have been strip-mined and enslaved by the Empire. He decides that the time has come to remain on Lothal to fight to free his home…but the overwhelming presence of the Empire makes that a dangerously easy promise to keep.

Flight Of The Defender

Star Wars: RebelsEzra, Zeb, Sabine, Ryder, and some overly friendly Loth-cats stake out the Imperial airstrip that the improved prototype TIE Defender calls home. Their mission: to gather as much data from the vehicle itself as they can. The problem: Grand Admiral Thrawn has just arrived. The potentially even bigger problem: running out of time and options, Sabine decides that if there isn’t time to download all the engineering and flight data, she’ll just steal the ship. But when they crash the Defender, Sabine and Ezra have a long trek back to the others with what they’ve learned…and a most unusual ally.

Star Wars: RebelsEzra and Zeb are trying to retrieve the hyperdrive stolen from the crashed TIE Defender when they run afoul of Grand Admiral Thrawn’s personal assassin, Rukh. Operating independently of the Imperial search parties, Rukh finds the Rebels quickly and tracks them back to their hideout. Ezra again spots a pack of Loth-wolves, which saved his life before, but now he has to talk the far more skeptical Kanan and Zeb into putting their lives in the wolves’ hands.

Crawler Commandeers

Star Wars: RebelsFrom their new base of operations on Lothal’s southern hemisphere, Ezra, Kanan and the others spot one of the surface-smelting strip-mining crawlers that have laid waste to much of the planet’s natural surface. The Empire hires these vehicles and their minimal crews from the Mining Guild, and Ezra sees an opportunity to seize control of it. The crawler’s captain, however, isn’t going to let these “pirates” take his ship from him easily. Kanan discovers that the Rebels’ sometimes-ally Cikatro Vizago is among the slave laborers toiling in the bowels of the crawler, possibly giving him an edge in recruiting the rest of the slaves aboard. When the crawler’s captive captain summons the Empire to help, the not-even-remotely-combat-ready crawler may suddenly become the Rebels’ biggest liability.

Rebel Assault

Star Wars: RebelsMon Mothma finally commits an attack force to destroy the TIE Defender factory on Lothal, in an effort to prevent the Empire’s new fighter from making it into mass production. Hera leads Phoenix Squadron into battle while Ezra, Kanan, Sabine, Zeb and Ryder begin destroying Imperial ground defenses on the surface. When Hera’s squadron is forced down onto Lothal, Grand Admiral Thrawn dispatches Rukh to hunt down the survivors. Kanan decides he alone has to go back to save her…but he may already be too late.

The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last JediThe Resistance, having enraged the leadership of the First Order by destroying Starkiller Base, is now on the run as the former Empire cuts off its supply lines and escape routes. A small flotilla of Resistance ships manages to escape, but General Hux and the First Order fleet are close behind them, pursuing at sublight speed to avoid overshooting their prey. Poe Dameron, still the most daring pilot in the Resistance, defies orders to take out the most heavily-armed dreadnought-class Star Destroyer, but his defiance – and the heavy losses incurred – cost him his rank. Kylo Ren is similarly facing the disdain of his Dark Side master, Supreme Chancellor Snoke, who chides him for not having the singular strength of will that his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker, did. Ren leads a strike on the Resistance fleet that almost results in his mother’s death; Leia’s latent Force powers save her life, but she is in no shape to lead the fleet, leaving Vice Admiral Holdo to assume command of what’s left of the Resistance. Finn, losing his nerve during the First Order’s onslaught, considers abandoning ship in an escape pod until he’s dissuaded by a young technician named Rose Tico, whose sister was one of the Resistance pilots killed in Poe’s ill-advised, unauthorized strike on the dreadnought – or, more accurately, Finn is dissuaded by a laser tool Rose is carrying for the express purpose of preventing potential deserters. When the First Order demonstrates the ability to track the Resistance fleet through hyperspace, it suddenly seems that Rose’s expertise in hyperdrive and Finn’s knowledge of First Order ship layouts is a promising combination…if only they can get aboard. A hot tip from Maz points them, with BB-8 in tow, to the luxury planet Canto Bight, where a renowned codebreaker can be found gambling in the casino. But Finn and Rose and their rolling droid stand out like sore thumbs among the Canto Bight elite, and are unable to get close enough to talk to the codebreaker in question before they’re locked up. They meet a fellow prisoner who claims to have the same skills they need to breach the defense of Snoke’s command ship.

During all of this, Rey, Chewie and R2-D2 have traveled to the obscure ocean planet Ahch-To, where Luke Skywalker (and various local life forms) tend to the ruins of what’s said to be the first Jedi temple. Luke is not at all happy to be disturbed from his solitude, informing Rey rather bluntly that he has come to this planet to age and die in peace, and to keep the sacred and ancient Jedi texts with him. Rey also discovers that he has forsaken use of the Force: Luke feels that the hubris of the Jedi led to the decades of suffering that resulted from the Sith and the Empire dominating the galaxy. The days of the Jedi, Luke has decided for himself, must come to an end. But shaken by news of Han’s death, and given a reminder of his own youthful yearning to become something greater, Luke reluctantly agrees to teach Rey the ways of the Force. He discovers along the way that her ability to tap into the Force may rival that of Kylo Ren himself – Ben Solo, Luke’s former protege who turned to the Dark Side. Luke’s fears may be founded, too: Kylo Ren and Rey are able to see and speak to one another despite the vast distances between them. Rey believes Ren can be turned away from Snoke’s influence, and since her mentor refuses to return to the fight against the First Order, she sets off to recruit Ren as an ally. Enraged, Luke sets out to burn down the last remains of the Jedi temple and the texts contained within, only to discover that his own mentor has beaten him to it…and unaware that Rey has already taken the texts with her.

Chewie drops Rey off in an escape pod near the First Order flagship, where Kylo Ren awaits her arrival and introduces her to Snoke, who uses the Force to extract Luke’s whereabouts from Rey’s mind. When she continues to declare her intent to resist Snoke, he orders Ren to kill her, but Ren instead kills Snoke, and a vicious battle with Snoke’s personal retinue of bodyguards ensues, during which Rey and Ren have to fight together. But once that threat is dealt with, Ren reveals that he killed Snoke to ascend to his throne and assume his position of power, not to help the Resistance. Finn, Rose, BB-8 and their new codebreaking acquaintance also sneak aboard the flagship to disable the hyperspace tracker, only for the shifty codebreaker to sell them out to the First Order. Aboard the last surviving Resistance cruiser, Poe Dameron has grown tired of Admiral Holdo’s secretive style of command and tries to mount a mutiny, only to have that uprising personally quashed by Leia, fresh out of the medical bay, still frail, but still fiercely determined. Poe’s point of contention is that Holdo is preparing to order the entire remaining Resistance to abandon the nearly-out-of-fuel cruiser in unarmed sublight transports, which will then limp to a nearby planet and the relative safety of an abandoned Rebel base from the days of the Empire, while the First Order (hopefully) concentrates all of its attention on the cruiser. Admiral Holdo remains on the cruiser to act as a decoy, but the First Order targets the helpless transports and begins blasting them out of the sky, one by one, until Holdo suicidally jumps the cruiser to lightspeed, ramming through Snoke’s flagship. Rey, Finn, Rose and BB-8 escape and make their way to the Rebel base, where Leia has ordered a distress call to be transmitted to allies of the Resistance – a call that seems to be going unanswered as First Order forces surround the base…until Luke Skywalker, last of the Jedi, appears from nowhere, conferring briefly with Leia before going outside to personally face off against Kylo Ren. The fight does not go the way that anyone expects, and buys the Resistance time to escape…but at this point, the Resistance has been whittled down in size to the point that they all fit inside the Millennium Falcon.

Jedi Night

Star Wars: RebelsAs Hera is questioned and tortured in Lothal’s capitol, Kanan confesses to Ezra that his feelings for Hera may be clouding his judgement, and he asks Ezra to take the lead on Hera’s rescue. Just as Ezra and Sabine prepare to leave on undetectable gliders disguised as Loth-bats, Kanan has a change of heart and joins the rescue mission. As Sabine and Ezra, disguised as Imperial pilots, work to hijack an escape vehicle, Kanan rescues Hera, who is moved to admit her feelings for him are mutual. The reunion is brief: Kanan wants to target the Imperial fuel depot on their way back to base, and Governor McGlynn wants to be rid of the Rebels on Lothal once and for all.

Star Wars: RebelsThe rebel cell on Lothal is demoralized in the wake of Kanan’s death. Hera retreates into grief, Sabine and Zeb set out for Imperial blood without a plan, and Ezra finds that the Loth-Wolves no longer harbor friendly feelings for him, and runs for his life. Though Governor Pryce declares victory and even arranges for a parade to celebrate the death of Kanan Jarrus, Grand Admiral Thrawn knows that this is a cover for her failures: the fuel refinery explosion severely damaged the TIE defender factory, forcing it to shut down. Expecting the rebels to mount a reckless attack in blind fury, Thrawn dispatches Rukh to finish them off. Lost in the wilderness, Ezra is cornered by the Loth-Wolves, one of whom now talks…and introduces itself as Dume, the same name that Kanan himself went by as a Jedi padawan.

Wolves And A Door

Star Wars: RebelsThanks to his Force connection to the Loth-Wolves, Ezra makes the others aware that the abandoned Jedi Temple on Lothal is now occupied by Imperial forces who are close to cracking its secrets. Hera approves a mission to keep that from happening, but is surprised when the Loth-Wolves themselves provide passage to the temple, which is far north of the rebel base camp. Sabine and Ezra disguise themselves as Biker Scouts and enter the Imperial operation, finding that it is being led by an unknown man who reports directly to the Emperor himself. The Loth-Wolves are defending their own secret of travel across Lothal by means of the Force, and need Ezra to learn and protect that secret as well…even if it means leaving Sabine in the hands of the Empire.

A World Between Worlds

Star Wars: RebelsAfter going through the Jedi portal, EZra finds himself at a crossroads connecting all of space and time through other similar portals. He reaches through one portal and pulls out Ahsoka Tano, rescuing her from her final duel with Darth Vader, but someone else is rapidly finding out how to reach through the other portals as well: the Emperor. Ahsoka warns Ezra that she can’t return to his present with him, but having survived the fight with Vader, she will find him again. With the Emperor’s ability to probe and manipulate the portals growing by the second, Ezra must now reunite with his friends and find a way to close all of the portals…or surrender to the Sith Lord the power to change history.

A Fool’s Hope

Star Wars: RebelsGovernor Pryce receives a call from deposed Governor Ryder Azadi, apparently ready to sell out the rebel cell on Lothal. Hoping that the capture of Ezra Bridger and the others will provide enough of a victory to avoid her impending execution by Thrawn, Pryce commits a significant Imperial force to taking the rebel base, only to be routed by the Ghost, returning to Lothal with Hera, Kallus, Ketsu, Hondo, and a complement of battle-hardened ex-clone troopers. But perhaps even more critical to the rebels’ victory is Ezra’s growing connection with the Force and the Loth-wolves. At the end of the day, the rebels have not only survived, but have taken the Governor of Lothal as their prisoner.

Notes: Hera’s maneuver – flipping the Ghost over to knock an Imperial transport out of the sky – anticipates a nearly-identical maneuver that a young Han Solo would use to eliminate a TIE Fighter chasing the Millennium Falcon (back when it was Lando’s ship) during the escape from Kessel in Solo (2018). Not so much a self-contained story as a half-hour all-star fight scene, A Fool’s Hope sets the stage for the series finale.

Family Reunion – And Farewell

Star Wars: RebelsWith Governor Pryce captured by the Rebels, Ezra’s plan to rid Lothal of any Imperial presence permanently is now in motion: the Rebels will, using the captured Imperial transports, infiltrate the Empire’s base on Lothal, where Pryce will – at the point of a blaster – recall all Imperial forces to the base for an evacuation. When Grand Admiral Thrawn returns to Lothal ahead of schedule and begins bombarding the planet’s civilian population from orbit in response, Ezra relents and hands himself over to Thrawn, over the protests of Hera and the others. Thrawn has orders to deliver Ezra to the Emperor, but even before then, Palpatine communicates with Ezra via hologram, offering to return his parents to him, alive and well, in exchange for revealing the secret of the gateway into time and space that was accessible from the ruins of Lothal’s Jedi temple. Ezra refuses, aware that his friends have already set his backup plan into motion, buying time for some old allies to attack the Imperial fleet hovering over Lothal. But will the price of thwarting the Emperor’s plans be the loss of another of the last few remaining Jedi?

Notes: The episode-ending coda reveals that Hera and Captain Rex fought in the battle of Endor, and Rogue One had already revealed the Ghost‘s presence at both Yavin IV and the battle of Scarif. Some time after the liberation of Lothal, Hera has a son, Jacen Syndulla, and Sabine’s narration in the coda indicates that Jacen’s father was Kanan. Ezra’s fate is left unresolved, with the tantalizing hint that Sabine and Ahsoka Tano begin a quest to find him after the fall of the Empire, perhaps to be chronicled elsewhere.

The Recruit

Star Wars: ResistanceKaz Xiono, a young pilot for the New Republic Navy (and the son of a senator), is trying to return valuable intelligence to the Republic when his X-Wing squadron is ambushed by a crimson TIE fighter. Kaz ensures that the rest of his group escape, but finds himself outgunned when trying to take on the First Order fighter alone until another X-Wing joins the battle. That fighter, piloted by Poe Dameron, not only saves Kaz’s life but escorts him aboard a cruiser belonging to the Resistance. Considered extremists by many members of the New Republic, the Resistance is recruiting for a fight against the First Order, a remnant of the Galactic Empire that many (including Kaz’s father) refuse to believe is a credible threat. Poe thinks Kaz has what it takes to join the Resistance, and brings him to the ocean planet Castilon to install him as a Resistance spy. Poe tells Kaz to lie low and blend in…and is horrified when, within a day, Kaz’s boast of being the best pilot in the galaxy is taken out of context. Now Kaz is expected to prove his claim in a life-or-death race…and neither Poe nor his local allies at the rough-and-tumble Colossus station can intervene without blowing their new recruit’s cover.

Series creator Dave Filoni wanted the animation style to more closely resemble anime, and drew from his father’s World War II experiences in setting up a scenario in which an obviously imminent threat is ignored by the populace at large.

The Triple Dark

Star Wars: ResistanceIn order to earn something resembling a living while waiting for any news of the First Order, Kaz has to work in Jarek Yeager’s repair shop, fixing speeders and spacecraft, but two things get in the way – he’s more excited by the prospect of spying, and knows next to nothing about repairing a ship. When Kaz thinks he overhears something worth spying on, he discovers that it’s not the First Order, but the station’s criminal underworld – and he quickly makes himself their next target.

Fuel For The Fire

Star Wars: ResistanceKaz finds it difficult to concentrate on work when there are races to watch from the open launch deck at Yeager’s shop, so he takes the engine he’s trying to repair out to the edge of the deck…and then watches helplessly as it suddenly starts and then dumps itself into the ocean. While on a break, Kaz runs into a young hotshot racing crew that seems to have its act together slightly better than his own, and he’s eager to make new friends. But his new “friends” are eager to use Kaz to get to Yeager’s stockpile of parts and fuel…and Kaz isn’t aware of Yeager’s own past as a racer, or the fact that he has fuel that’s far too dangerous for recreational racing.
