Shroud Of Darkness

Star Wars: RebelsAs the Ghost crew continues searching for a base for the Rebellion, the Inquisitors keep pursuing Kanan and Ezra, to the point that Kanan believes their presence is endangering the rest of the Rebellion. They seek Ahsoka’s advice, but she has none – at time like these, she would always turn to Master Yoda. With Ahsoka in tow, Kanan and Ezra return to Lothal and reveal the hidden Jedi temple there, where Kanan hopes to seek Yoda’s counsel. Instead, Kanan receives a dire warning that he will fail to protect Ezra, and Ezra will turn to the dark side. Ezra sees Yoda, while Ahsoka sees a vision of Anakin, berating her for failing to be at his side when he needed her most. And during all of these Force visions, the Inquisitors are once again close by…

The Forgotten Droid

Star Wars: RebelsThe Rebel fleet prepares to jump to the Yost system, a system rumored to have little or no Imperial presence, a promising site for a future Rebel base. But the Rebels’ stolen Imperial carrier doesn’t have enough fuel for that kind of hyperspace trip, and more must be stolen from the Empire. The Ghost lands at a remote Imperial depot, but as Hera and Kanan fight their way into an Imperial complex, Chopper is more interested in getting a new left leg. The cranky old droid finds a suitable leg at a nearby dealer of droids and droid parts, but is so preoccupied with this leg that he fails to notice the Ghost leaving without him…

Mystery Of Chopper Base

Star Wars: RebelsThe planet suggested by Chopper’s new friend, AP-5, as a possible Rebel hideout is indeed promising. The Empire’s influence is nowhere to be found, and a desert planet attracts little interest from anyone else. But the Rebels haven’t counted on hostile local life forms, and soon find themselves fighting to save their new base from creatures that already lived there. Meanwhile, Kanan and Ezra are training furiously for a showdown with the Inquisitors, a duel they know they cannot avoid – and a duel which Hera knows may cost her two of her most valuable crewmates.

Twilight Of The Apprentice – Part 1

Star Wars: RebelsKanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka set out with Chopper to find out why the vision of Yoda directed Ezra to go to Malacore. The answer is obvious when they arrive: an ancient Sith temple lies waiting. And that’s not all that lies in wait: the Inquisitors are already there, though not all of them are expecting the Rebels. A third Inquisitor is hunting “the shadow”. A floor collapses in the temple, separating Ezra from the others, and he befriends an old man who simply calls himself the Old Master. The Old Master has been trapped alone in the Sith temple for years, but since all Sith technology and architecture requires two people – a master and an apprentice – to operate it, he enlists Ezra’s help to retrieve a Sith holocron. The Old Master is the shadow.

But he was once known as Darth Maul.

Twilight Of The Apprentice – Part 2

Star Wars: RebelsTo everyone’s surprise, Maul renounces his loyalty to the Sith and the title of Darth: he is at the Sith temple on Malacore to claim the Sith holocron for his own reasons. Maul joins the Jedi to fight off the Inquisitors, though Ezra and Ahsoka are very skeptical of him. Impressed by Ezra’s Force ability, Maul decides that the boy is now his apprentice, and Kanan attacks the ex-Sith, only to be blinded by his lightsaber. Ezra is busy trying to put the Sith holocron into place, unwittingly powering up a Sith superweapon which Maul intends to use against all who oppose him, Jedi or Sith. To make matters worse, Darth Vader arrives to claim that weapon for the Empire…and the only one left to stop him is his former padawan.

It would appear that, despite half of his helmet being destroyed in an earlier battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Vader has done nothing about strengthening his helmet, as the opposite side of it is destroyed by Ahsoka during their battle.

Steps Into Shadow

Star Wars: RebelsEzra leads a daring raid on a fully staffed Imperial outpost on Naraka to rescue Hondo, who has been a useful informant for past Rebel operations. Hondo points the Alliance toward an Imperial salvage yard where captured Rebel Y-Wings are being dismantled for scrap; recovering them intact would boost Rebel firepower significantly, despite the fighters’ age. Ezra, Sabine, Chopper and Rex scout the salvage yard out in the Phantom, only to discover that only a few Y-Wings remain intact. Ezra, promoted to lieutenant commander in the Rebel Alliance, decides that the scouting mission has become a recovery mission on the fly. Missing all of the action is Kanan, still blinded after his duel with Darth Maul, and deeply disturbed to find that Ezra has been gaining knowledge from the Sith Holocron. Kanan hears a voice that leads him away from the safe confines of Chopper Base, where he discovers a creature that calls itself the Bendu – a being whose Force abilities lie between the light and dark sides. The Bendu begins trying to teach Kanan to use the Force and his own remaining senses to “see” what his eyes can no longer see…but what he sees now is his own fear. But at the Imperial salvage yard, Ezra’s lack of fear and his confidence and reliance on his new abilities may lead him to his own doom.

RebelsCast: Taylor Gray (Ezra Bridger), Vanessa Marshall (Hera Syndulla), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Kanan Jarrus / Stormtrooper), Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren), Steve Blum (Zeb Orrelios / Imperial Officer #2 / Rebel Soldier), Dee Bradley Baker (Admiral Konstantine / Melch / Rex / Stormtrooper Guard #1), David Owelyo (Agent Kallus), Tom Baker (Bendu), Derek Partridge (Commander Brom Titus), Keone Young (Commander Sato), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Governor Pryce), Lars Mikkelsen (Grand Admiral Thrawn), Stephen Stanton (Grand Moff Tarkin), Jim Cummings (Hondo Ohnaka / Imperial Officer #1 / Mining Guild Captain / Terba), Nika Futterman (Presence), Dave Filoni (Rebel Trooper / Stormtrooper Guard #2)

RebelsNotes: Grand Admiral Thrawn has a considerably complex history considering that this is his first appearance in any non-print Star Wars media. Created by author Timothy Zahn and introduced in the 1991 novel Heir To The Empire, Thrawn had become a casualty of the Lucasfilm Story Group’s massive realignment of Star Wars canon in the wake of Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney. However, Zahn wrote a new novel – simply titled Thrawn – to realign the calculating Imperial tactical master with the new continuity, and Thrawn was also introduced as an on-screen character for the first time in this episode. Thrawn lives once again in the larger Star Wars canon. Hera says that the Y-Wings are being sent to “General Dodonna’s unit”, meaning that these may well be the Y-Wings flown by Porkins and his wing during the attack on the Death Star in Star Wars. The name “Bendu” has an even longer history in Star Wars Rebelslore, back to early drafts of George Lucas’ The Star Wars, which featured the Jedi Bendu order rather than Jedi Knights. Bendu is voiced by Tom Baker, best known for his lengthy tenure as the fourth Doctor Who. Baker is the second Doctor to lend his voice to the Star Wars animated universe; one of his successors, David Tennant, voiced a droid character in an episode of The Clone Wars.

Holocrons Of Fate

Star Wars: RebelsKanan and Ezra race to the scene of an attack on a Rebel cruiser, only to discover it’s a diversion: the twisted Sith Maul has taken Hera and the reset of the Phantom crew hostage, and demands both the Jedi and Sith holocrons. When retrieving the Sith artifact from Bendu, Kanan and Ezra are warned that the two holocrons together are a powerful threat. The holocrons are delivered to Maul by Ezra, while Kanan barely survives a trap set by Maul. Kanan is left for dead, making it easier for him to free the others, while Maul discovers something from the combined holocrons that leaves him repeating “He lives! He lives!” as he makes his escape. But what did Ezra see?

Rau has no idea what has changed, but offers to return with Sabine to find out; of course, he’s also planning to escape while he’s there. Anyone who doesn’t join them in bowing to the Empire – even fellow Mandalorians – is marked for capture or death.

Star Wars: RebelsThe Ghost is sent to help evacuate a Rebel cell from the planet Mykapo, but a freighter identifying itself as “Iron Squadron” is already putting up a fight against the Empire, even though it’s readily apparent that the freighter has no hyperdrive of its own and can’t escape. The leader of “Iron Squadron” – all of whom are teenagers – is Mart Mattin, nephew of Commander Sato of the Rebel fleet. Sabine and Ezra offer to stay and help Mart and his friends repair their ship, unaware that Grand Admiral Thrawn is using Mart as the bait in a trap to lure the Rebel’s leadership out into the open.

An Inside Man

Star Wars: RebelsKanan, Ezra and Chopper return to Lothal after receiving a summons from Ryder Azadi, warning of a new Imperial weapon under development. Ezra’s home planet is now under total Imperial control, but there is a bright side: according to Ryder, the Empire’s best and brightest laborers have been reassigned to the new weapon, leaving the Empire no choice but to draft locals to build speeder bikes…and the people of Lothal have been deliberately turning out fatally flawed vehicles. But this has also drawn the attention of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who arrives to personally crack down on the sabotage. What started as a simple fact-finding mission is now something much more dangerous.

Rogue One

Rogue One: A Star Wars StoryOrson Krennic, an Imperial officer, tracks down Galen Erso, a science officer who defected from the Empire to avoid allowing his talents to be used to perfect the primary weapon of the Empire’s giant battlestation. Krennic’s squadron of Death Troopers guns down Erso’s wife, but fails to find his young daughter, who has gone into hiding in a prearranged shelter, to be picked up later by Rebel insurgent Saw Gererra. Galen Erso is taken back to work for the Empire; his daughter grows up without seeing him again.

But she does hear about him. Rescued – or is it abducted? – from an Imperial slave labor detail on Wobani, Jyn Erso is taken to a secret Rebel base in the Yavin system, and questioned about her father’s work. An Imperial Pilot has defected from the Empire, carrying a message from Galen Erso to Saw Gerrera with details of the secret weapon. Under the careful supervision of Rebel intelligence agent Cassian Andor and his caustic, reprogrammed Imperial droid, K-2SO, Jyn joins a mission to Jedha, home of Gerrera’s extreme faction of Rebels. The Empire is present in force, both mining kyber to complete the secret weapon and trying to track down the defecting pilot, and Jyn and Cassian stumble into guerilla warfare that has nothing to do with them – indeed, Cassian decides it’s more of an obstacle than useful cover for their mission. They befriend a blind fighter named Chirrut, who claims a personal connection to the Force, and his heavily-armed comrade Baze, who has grown skeptical of the Force…and all of them are taken to Saw Gerrera. Jyn sees a holographic message from her father, detailing a weakness that he has carefully built into the main reactor of the Death Star, the Empire’s new weapon…but just after viewing the message, Jyn and the others, with former Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook in tow, must escape the destruction of Jedha, whose surface is tearing itself apart after a single shot from the Death Star.

From Jedha to an Imperial weapons development base on Eadu to the Empire’s repository of technical schematics on Scarif, the Rebels are fighting not just the pursuing forces of Krennic and the Empire, but one another. Word of the Death Star’s power fails to galvanize the Rebellion’s leadership into action, leaving Cassian, Jyn, Chirrut, Baze, K-2SO, Bodhi, and a ragtag group of volunteers to try to steal the Death Star plans from Scarif. Grand Moff Tarkin, keen to seize control of the Death Star from Krennic, is more than happy to demonstrate his fully armed and operational battle station to the Rebelliion. With the Empire’s technological terror now roaming the galaxy, it will take no less a miracle than the return of the Jedi themselves to save the Rebellion.
