The Savage Curtain

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5906.4: Over the planet Excalbia, the Enterprise is intercepted by who appears to be Abraham Lincoln, floating through space. Beaming aboard, Lincoln is welcomed by Kirk, who is somewhat awed by the presence of one of his most revered figures of history. “Lincoln” extends an invitation to Kirk and Spock to visit the planet, whose normally lava-covered surface sprouts a zone of Earthlike safety just for the landing party. Kirk, Spock and Lincoln are joined on the surface by an image of Surak, who initiated the doctrine of emotional restraint on Vulcan. A rock-creature appears and introduces Kirk and Spock to four more illusionary figures from history, this time the fiercest conquerors, tyrants and villains of the past, from Earth’s Genghis Khan to Kahless the Unforgettable, who, as Surak did for Vulcan, set the standard of behavior for the Klingons. The creature pits the best and most noble – Kirk, Spock, Lincoln and Surak – against the most vile historical figures. The rewards for Kirk and Spock, should they survive, are their lives, and the lives of everyone aboard the Enterprise.

All Our Yesterdays

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5943.7: Arriving at the moon Sarpiedon, whose mother planet is due to explode in three hours, Kirk, Spock and McCoy find just what the ship’s sensors indicated on the surface – no life forms, though an advanced civilization obviously once existed. But they then find several copies of Sarpiedon’s librarian, Mr. Atoz. Some of the clones are helpful, others belligerent, but they all tell the landing party that all the people of Sarpiedon have already escaped to safety, and Atoz, thinking that Kirk and the others are natives who arrived late, advises them to do the same. The library turns out to be a file of “time periods” into which a device Atoz calls the atavachron can propel them, as it has already provided an escape for the rest of the moon’s inhabitants. Hearing a woman screaming, but not realizing that she is one the other side of tha atavachron’s time portal, Kirk leaps into a time period similar to the 1800s, and Spock and McCoy stumble into an ice age trying to retrieve him. All three must try to survive long enough in their respective environments for the time portal back to Sarpiedon to return – if that moon still exists in the 23rd century for them to return to.

Turnabout Intruder

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5298.5: Visiting Dr. Coleman and the ailing Dr. Lester, a colleague of Kirk’s from Starfleet Academy who has always envied him due to her inability to achieve a captaincy in a male-captains-only Starfleet, Kirk is rendered unconscious by Lester. It turns out to have been a trap, and Lester puts herself and Kirk into an unknown device that transfers their minds into one another’s bodies. Lester, in the form of Kirk, doesn’t have time to kill Kirk (now in the female body). Lester and Coleman make every attempt to leave Kirk on the planet, but must bring “her” aboard to save face. Kirk, still suffering a severe shock from the mind transfer, is unable to warn McCoy about Lester’s plan to command the Enterprise (especially when Lester keeps ordering Kirk sedated). Lester, however, is unable to conceal her lack of knowledge of command procedures and, more specifically, Kirk’s character, and when Spock learns the truth and attempts to help Kirk, Lester has him placed under arrest and tries to speed Spock’s court-martial toward a conclusion which would have Kirk and Spock executed.

Beyond The Farthest Star

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5221.3: Near the edge of the galaxy, a powerful gravitational force has seized the Enterprise. Sulu is able to alter the ship’s course just enough to go into orbit around the dead stellar core which is the source of the gravity, rather than crashing into it. Also in orbit is a vessel of organic origins, with a structure that indicates two things – the ship was built by insectoid beings, and those beings appear to have destroyed themselves. A log entry recorded by one of the aliens warns of the presence of a malevolent life form, prompting Kirk and his landing party to return to the Enterprise – only to discover that whatever attacked the insectoids has now beamed aboard with them.

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5373.4: A visit to the Guardian of Forever goes wrong somehow, erasing Spock from history. Though the Vulcan returns to the 23rd century along with Kirk, no one recognizes Spock, and an Andorian named Thalen is serving as the Enterprise’s first officer. Spock uses the Guardian to travel 30 years into his own past, at the point when the new timeline’s history says Spock died as a boy on Vulcan. Passing himself off as his own cousin, Spock watches as his younger self sneaks away in the night, scared to undergo a grueling rite of passage. The younger Spock is followed by I’Chiya, his aging pet sehlat, who sacrifices its life to save Spock from a predatory creature. Having saved his own life, the elder Spock now worries that the unexpected death of I’Chiya may change his future yet again.

One Of Our Planets Is Missing

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5372.3: The Enterprise crew watches helplessly as an enormous cloud engulfs an entire planet, and discover that it is headed for the heavily populated planet Mantilles. The Enterprise, pursuing the cloud, is also swallowed by it. From inside the cloud, Spock determines that it is a living organism. Kirk decides that the organism must be destroyed, but Spock finds that this can only be accomplished by unleashing an enormous amount of energy which would also destroy the Enterprise. The only hope for the people of Mantilles is an unconventional mind-meld between Spock and the planet-consuming life form.

The Lorelei Signal

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5483.7: While investigating a region of space which has seen the unexplained disappearance of Federation, Romulan and Klingon ships at precise intervals, the Enterprise receives a song-like signal from the Taurean system, 20 light years away. Uhura is alarmed when Scotty, Kirk and other male officers – even Spock – are mesmerized by the musical message. Kirk leads a landing party beams to the planet of origin, but they do not return to the ship. When most of the male crew is incapacitated, Uhura and Nurse Chapel assume command of the Enterprise. On the planet, Spock makes a horrifying discovery – the female aliens hope to lure men to their world. Their male slaves will be drained of life energy, giving the women almost immortal youth. And with over half of a 430-person crew to choose from, the aliens should remain healthy for a long time…

More Tribbles, More Trouble

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5392.4: Escorting two automated freighters to Sherman’s Planet with their precious cargo of quadrotriticale, the Enterprise is diverted when a distress signal is received from another Federation ship under Klingon attack. The sole occupant of the besieged vessel is rescued, but the Klingons destroy his ship and then turn their attention to the Enterprise. Koloth, commanding the Klingon vessel, claims that the pilot of the smaller Federation ship is wanted for the crime of introducing the ravenous (and rapidly-reproducing) tribbles to the Klingon ecosystem. When the pilot turns out to be shady trader Cyrano Jones, peddler of tribbles, Kirk wonders if Koloth doesn’t have a point. Jones left Space Station K-7 after using a tribble-munching life-form known as a glommer to clean up the station’s tribble overpopulation problem. Koloth reveals that the glommer was genetically engineered by the Klingons…and therefore Cyrano Jones could be doing real damage to the Klingon Empire.

The Survivor

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5143.3: A vessel with a single occupant sends a distress signal from the Federation side of the Romulan neutral zone. When the Enterprise beams the ship’s pilot aboard, it turns out to be famed philanthropist Carter Winston – though Dr. McCoy’s instruments disagree, not even diagnosing the patient as human. Winston visits Kirk in his quarters and suddenly transforms into a tentacled creature, knocking the captain out and assuming his physical appearance. Winston, in the shape of Kirk, instructs the crew to change course to go to a planet deep within the neutral zone – almost ensuring an entanglement with the Romulans.

The Infinite Vulcan

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5554.4: A visit to a previously uncharted planet reveals an advanced laboratory, and a race of mobile plant life, the Phylosians. These beings prove to be friendly enough when they cure Sulu of the effects of a local poison. But when an a flock of airborne creatures aid in the abduction of Spock, a seemingly giant human being appears, claiming to be the long-lost Dr. Keniclius – a geneticist who was banished for his attempts to create a master race during the disastrous Eugenics Wars. Keniclius claims that he needs Spock to create a clone-army of beings to “enforce” peace upon the entire galaxy – but after seeing that the Phylosians have a hangar full of spacecraft, Kirk is suspicious of Keniclius’ goals.

The Magicks Of Megas-Tu

Star Trek ClassicStardate 1254.2: While exploring a nebular phenomenon in which matter is constantly created, the Enterprise is whisked into an alternate universe. A hoofed creature named Lucien boards the ship, and then beams down to the surface of a nearby planet with Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Lucien explains that he and the other people of Megas-Tu once visited Earth, but when they practiced their natural gift of magic, the Megans were hunted down and killed for practicing witchcraft. But when the other Megans discover that Lucien has brought humans to their world, Kirk and his crew and put on a witch trial of their own in a recreation of 17th-century Salem.

Once Upon A Planet

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5591.2: Captain Kirk orders a layover for the Enterprise at the still unnamed world where his crew visited once before, an idyllic, Earthlike planet whose massive computer can create whatever fantasy its visitors desire. But not long after the crew’s shore leave begins, things begin to go horribly wrong – McCoy is almost killed by something that he most certainly didn’t fantasize about, and Uhura is kidnapped by some kind of robot. The transporter is able to retrieve everyone except Uhura, so Kirk launches a rescue mission. But when he tries to find the Keeper, the planet’s humanoid custodian, he discovers that the Keeper has died – and no one may be able to regain control of the planet’s computer…or rescue the Enterprise’s communications officer.

Mudd’s Passion

Star Trek ClassicStardate 4978.5: Upon receiving word that interplanetary con man Harry Mudd is up to his old tricks, swindling settlers in the Arcadian star system, the Enterprise crew tracks down Mudd, and Kirk and Spock beam down to arrest him (exposing Mudd’s deceptions to the easily-angered natives in the process). Once again, Mudd is peddling an illegal drug, this time a substance which can supposedly make one irresistible to the opposite sex. Picking up on Nurse Chapel’s affection for Spock, Mudd gives her a sample of his drug and suggests she use it to analyze its properties. Using this as a distraction, Mudd also manages to escape from the brig. When the drug initially fails to work, Chapel hunts Mudd down, inadvertently becoming his hostage when he grabs her and steals a shuttle to escape from the Enterprise. To ensure his escape, Mudd has also added his drug to the ship’s air circulation system, leaving the crew in far too friendly a mood to worry about one criminal.

The Terratin Incident

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5577.3: The Enterprise receives a distress signal from the solitary planet in the Cepheus system, where no life has previously been known to exist. As the crew tries to respond to the distress signal, they are suddenly paralyzed by a powerful energy discharge, which also critically damages the Enterprise’s engines, stranding them in orbit. To make matters worse, the crew is now shrinking in size, presumably a side effect of the blast of energy. Kirk suspects that whoever is sending the distress signal is responsible for the gradual miniaturization of his crew.

The Time Trap

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5252.2: The Enterprise undertakes a hazardous exploration of the Delta Triangle, an area of space where starships have been disappearing for centuries. A chance encounter with a Klingon battlecruiser in the Delta Triangle results in a brief exchange of fire – and then the Klingon vessel vanishes. Two other Klingon ships approach, promising vengeance upon Kirk and his ship. Kira orders a course heading for the precise coordinates where the first Klingon ship disappeared, and the Enterprise is sucked into an unknown region filled with the debris of ships, some of them centuries old. Another encounter with the Klingon ship proves that weapons are useless here – and then the captains of the two ships are beamed off their respective bridges to meet with the Council of Elysia. The Council is comprised of beings who have found themselves stranded in this region, including Vulcans, Orions, Romulans, Tellarites, Phylosians, Andorians, Gorn and others – and they implore Kirk and his old enemy Kor to give up their hopes for escape. What the council of Elysia does not anticipate is an agreement between the Federation and Klingon crews to pool their resources …but even as the joint venture begins, one of the two captains is planning to do away with the other.
