Flashback: After turning the key and imploding the hatch, Desmond wakes up in his old apartment, having just fallen from a ladder. Penelope has just moved in, and Desmond is preparing to meet her father, Mr. Widmore. Their meeting does not go well, as Whitmore tells Desmond that he will never be good enough for Penny. As he storms from the meeting, Desmond sees a street musician playing for tips – Charlie. Desmond recognizes him, and remembers more of the island. He asks a physicist friend of his if time travel is possible, and the friend disbelieves Desmond’s story.

Desmond tries to convince himself that he’s not crazy, and that he can still get his life going the way that he wants. He goes to buy an engagement ring – but at the last moment the shop clerk refuses to sell it to him. She tells Desmond that being with Penny is not his path, that he is destined to go to the island, push the button, and turn the key – that it is the one great thing that he will do, and the universe has ways of correcting its course. Desmond tries, and meets with Penny. But before he proposes, they get their picture taken together. Desmond recognizes it as the picture that he carries with him on the island. Shaken up, he breaks up with Penny and returns to the pub. A soccer result confirms for him that his visions/memories are real, which gives him a renewed determination to try and change things. But before he can, a cricket bat to the head knocks him unconscious again – and he wakes up shortly after the implosion.

The Island: Desmond brings Charlie and Hurley to meet Sayid and Locke, who tells them of Eko’s death. Desmond suddenly runs back to the beach and dives into the water to pull Claire out of the ocean. Hurley tells Charlie that he believes Desmond can see the future, so they decide to get Desmond drunk. Charlie provokes a fight, and Desmond eventually reveals that when he turned the key, his life flashed before his eyes – and he’s still getting flashes. Those flashes tell him that someone on the island is going to die. And as much as Desmond might try to stop it, the universe has a way of correcting course.

Flashback: Jack spends some time on a beach in Thailand, where he meets Achara, a woman who refuses to divulge much about herself. The secrets don’t get in the way of their attraction, but eventually Jack’s curiosity gets the better of him. He follows her to a tattoo parlor, and Achara reveals that she has a gift. She sees people for who they are, and then marks them – definition, not decoration. This is exactly what Jack’s been looking for, and he demands that Achara tell him who he is. She begs him not to – he is an outsider, and there will be consequences. But he is adamant – he demands to know. Achara tells Jack that he is a leader, but that this makes him alone and angry. This seems to resonate, and he demands that she tattoo him, no matter who else might disapprove.

The Island: Kate keeps looking for an opportunity to go back and rescue Jack, or to use Karl to find the Others’ main residence. But Sawyer takes a more cautious approach, and even suggests to Karl that he go try to find Alex. Whether this is a moment of sentimentality on Sawyer’s part, or an effort to sever Karl’s fate from their, it works, leaving Kate and Sawyer alone with their unresolved issues.

It’s musical cells day back at the Others’ camp, with Jack moved into Sawyer’s old cell and Juliet placed in Jack’s. Another member of the Others, Isabel, is investigating Juliet’s actions, and Jack decides to cover for her. Isabel is not buying his story, however. Juliet’s one chance at staying in the Others’ favor appears to be convincing Jack to help Ben with his post-operative recovery, but for the moment Jack is not interested.

In his new outdoor setting, Jack receives several visitors. Cindy, the stewardess who was in the tail section of Flight 815, appears with a group of adults and children, one of whom asks how Ana Lucia is doing. Jack asks Cindy what happened, but she ducks the question, and simply says that they are there to watch. Jack, none too pleased with this answer, shouts at them to go away. Later, Alex visits to ask why he saved Ben. He tells her that he did it because he said he would. Alex tells him that Juliet will likely be killed, which sends Jack into action. Now he’s ready to make a deal with Ben – his assistance in exchange for Juliet’s life.

Flashback: When a meteor strikes the rebuilt Chicken Shack shortly before its grand re-opening, killing a TV reporter and her cameraman, Hurley is more convinced than ever that he is cursed. In an effort to persuade him otherwise, his mother invites his father David back to their home – seventeen years after he left. The reunion is a rocky one, with Hurley determined to go to Australia to investigate the numbers and equally determined that his father not get to take advantage of the lottery money. David makes a final plea to Hurley not to go, and suggests that Hurley just give the money away and make a fresh start. Perhaps they could even take the road trip to the Grand Canyon they had planned seventeen years before. But Hurley isn’t interested in fresh starts at the moment.

The Island: Charlie tells Hurley what Desmond warned regarding his fate, but they are soon interrupted by Vincent, carrying a decomposed arm with a key ring still dangling from it. Hurley follows the dog to discover a tipped-over Dharma bus, whose driver was apparently ferrying some beer across the island. Hurley is determined to get the bus working again, for his sake and for Charlie’s – he figures they both could use a victory right about now.

He winds up with some unexpected help. Jin, frustrated by Sun’s refusal to speak to him in anything but English, volunteers without knowing what he’s getting into. When Sawyer and Kate return to the camp, Sawyer seeks out Hurley and Charlie in order to reclaim his stash. He also takes the opportunity to help himself to the beer and help Jin with his English. All the assistance may be for naught, since Jin can not get the engine running. But Hurley is not taking no for an answer, and decides to enlist one more helper – gravity, in the form of a very steep hill ending in some very large rocks.

Kate has her own mission in mind. At odds with Sawyer, and unsure that the other castaways have the stomach for another confrontation with the Others, she returns to the jungle. Sayid and Locke find her, and soon after the three of them are face to face with Kate’s quarry – a woman who most certainly has the motivation to find the Others’ camp, and the teenaged girl who helped Kate and Sawyer escape.

Flashback: In Paris after the first Gulf War, Sayid is imprisoned by a man who claims that Sayid interrogated and tortured his wife. Sami demands that Sayid confess and acknowledge his wrongdoing, but Sayid insists that he was not the interrogator responsible for his wife’s scars.

The Island: Sawyer tries to win his stash back by playing a ping pong match against Hurley, but Hurley’s had far too much practice. Once the game is over, Hurley makes a peace offering and tries to reassure Sawyer that Kate will be all right with Sayid and Locke.

Sayid discovers a farm with a satellite dish, and recognizes the man watching the animals. It is the eyepatch-wearing man he, Locke and the others saw on the monitor in the Pearl station. Sayid goes into the open in order to make contact, the man shoots him in the arm. When Locke and Kate run in with weapons ready, he claims it was a mistake – that he believed they were part of the Others, violating their truce. He introduces himself as Mikhail, and says he is the last surviving member of the Dharma Initiative. The rest were killed when the launched an ill-fated attack against the Others, who had been on the island before Dharma arrived. Mikhail claims the Others – or hostiles – agreed to let him stay at the Flame station as long as he did not venture into their territory.

Locke finds a computer with a chess game and begins to play it, despite Mikhail’s claims that the game can not be beaten. After Mikhail removes the bullet from Sayid’s arm, Sayid tells Kate that he believes that Mikhail is lying – and that he is not alone. Soon after, Mikhail drops the fiction and attacks Sayid and Kate; they get the upper hand, and leave Locke to guard the unconscious and bound man while they explore a hidden basement. They find many Dharma manuals and documents there, along with Ms. Klugh. But Locke gets distracted by the chess game long enough for Mikhail to get the drop on him. Mikhail wants to exchange prisoners, but Klugh has other, more drastic plans to make sure the castaways get no information from her. And when Locke finally beats the chess game, he discovers that Dharma’s communications equipment no longer works, and that Dharma has drastic plans of its own to keep the Flame station out of hostile hands.

Flashback: A teenaged Claire and her mother are in an automobile accident. Claire suffers relatively minor injuries, but her mother is thrown from the car. Doctors stabilize her, but she remains in a coma. Tension is high between Claire and her aunt Lindsay – and it is only exacerbated when Claire’s father arrives. Claire’s mother had told her that her father was dead, but he has returned to Sydney in order to pay for her medical expenses and to see Claire again. He recommends that Claire let her mother go. Horrified, Claire tells him to leave, and doesn’t want to know so much as his name. A fateful choice, since her father is Christian Shepherd.

The Island: Claire sees some birds migrating south, and deduces that they might be able to attach a message to one of the birds’ tracking tags. She enlists Sun and Jin to help catch one, but Desmond scares them away, claiming to have been hunting boar. Claire does not believe the explanation, and accuses Charlie of hiding something from her. But Charlie is unwilling to tell her of the fate Desmond foresees for him.

As Locke, Sayid, Rousseau and Kate make their way toward the Others’ camp, Sayid and Locke argue over tactics, the fate of their prisoner Mikhail, and Locke’s destruction of the Flame station. One of those issues is settled when they encounter a perimeter of pillars bearing sensors. Locke pushes Mikhail across the sensor threshold – and Mikhail promptly has a cerebral hemorrhage and dies. The group may find their way over this obstacle – but they are not prepared for what they find when they finally reach the Others’ village.

Flashback: Suffering from depression, Locke lives alone in a small apartment. A young man named Peter knocks on his door and asks about the man to whom he gave his kidney. His mother is about to marry a man that Peter doesn’t trust – and when he dug into the man’s past, he discovered that his mother’s future husband had once gone by the name of Anthony Cooper and received a kidney from Locke. Peter wants to know if Locke will vouch for Cooper, but Locke claims the donation was anonymous and sends Peter away.

Soon after, Locke tracks down Cooper himself, and insists that he break off the engagement. He won’t let Cooper fool anyone else into thinking he’s family. Cooper says he’ll end the relationship, but a few days later Locke learns that Peter is dead. Once again, Locke chooses not to tell the truth to investigators, but confronts Cooper himself. When he does, Cooper’s desperation has permanent consequences for Locke.

The Island: Kate, Sayid and Locke are surprised to see Jack cooperating with the Others. Rousseau sneaks away from the group to observe things on her own, while Locke suggests that the others wait for nightfall to talk to Jack alone. Kate enters the house where he’s staying, and Jack begs her to leave while she can – the house is being watched. Guards storm the room and capture Kate, along with Sayid standing guard outside. But Locke slips away and finds Ben. He demands that Ben tell him the location of their submarine and sends Alex to retrieve Sayid’s bag – and the explosives Locke took from the Flame station. Ben and the Others don’t understand the island, he says, and that’s why Ben is stuck in a wheelchair. But Locke is going to make sure that the Others stop cheating, and that no one leaves the island. He’s going to blow up the submarine, even though Jack and Juliet are supposed to leave in just an hour. As it turns out, Ben may not be so unhappy with this turn of events. And he thinks that Locke might be able to help him some more – and as an inducement, Ben shows Locke one more of the island’s miracles . . . a face from his past.

Flashback: Nikki and Paolo poison a Sydney television producer and steal millions of dollars in diamonds from his safe. Their getaway is somewhat hampered by the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. While other castaways worry about suitcases with guns and other intrigues, Nikki and Paolo search for the lost bag of diamonds. Along the way they discover the heroin smugglers’ plane – which they wisely decide not to climb into – and the Pearl hatch – to which Paolo later returns. He has found the diamonds, but decides to hide them from Nikki. While in the hatch, he sees Ben and Juliet observe Jack in the Swan hatch, and takes the walkie-talkie they leave behind. When Nikki learns of the subterfuge, she makes use of one of Dr. Artz’s specimens to paralyze Paolo and take the diamonds. But the insect tables are soon turned on her, and when she stumbles out of the jungle in front of Hurley and Sawyer, she can whisper only a single word before she collapses.

The Island: Sawyer and Hurley are playing ping pong when Nikki stumbles out of the jungle and collapses. She whispers something before her heart stops, which Hurley takes to mean “Paolo lies.” Further investigation reveals Paolo’s body lying in the jungle. As the castaways prepare to bury the two lovers, they try to figure out what killed them. Hurley tries to figure out why Sawyer seems to be hiding something about what he knows of the two. Sun believes that the Others might be involved, especially after Sawyer finds one of their walkie-talkies among Paolo’s equipment. Charlie confesses that he and Sawyer attacked Sun, not the Others. Sawyer admits his guilt and offers Sun the diamonds, but she refuses. In the end, Sawyer chooses to bury the diamonds with the still-paralyzed Nikki and Paolo.

Flashback: Kate returns to Iowa in order to ask her mother why she told the authorities that Kate had murdered her father. On the way, she runs into car trouble, and when the tow truck drops her off at a local gas station, she bumps into Cassidy trying to run a small con. Kate helps Cassidy escape trouble from the station attendant, and in return Cassidy offers to help Kate slip past the feds and set up a meeting with her mom. The meeting does not go well, but Diane agrees not to tell the marshals. On her way out of town, Kate offers to help Cassidy get even with the man who conned her, but Cassidy seems to have taken a different lesson from Kate’s experience.

The Island: Hurley warns Sawyer that the inhabitants of the beach are preparing a vote to banish Sawyer from the camp. He suggests that Sawyer work to make amends with the rest of the group, but Sawyer shrugs off the advice – until he realizes that he won’t be able to make it on his own. So he begins to reach out to the others, with Hurley as an unofficial campaign manager.

Locke tells Kate that he is going to be leaving soon with the Others. Soon after, the Others throw a canister of gas into her room and she falls unconscious. When she wakes up, she is handcuffed to Juliet, who seems just as bewildered as she is. Kate insists on following the trail back to the Others’ village. When Juliet blames Kate for ruining his (and Juliet’s) chance to leave the island, Kate strikes her and eventually dislocates her shoulder. Soon after, they hear the monster approach them, and frantically look for a place to hide. Juliet forces Kate to confront how little she really knows about Jack, and shows she knows more than she let on about both their handcuffs and the monster. That knowledge helps them return to the village safely, where they find Sayid and Jack. As the three survivors prepare to return to their camp, they must settle one question between themselves: will Juliet be left behind?

Flashback: Juliet takes the job with Mitelos, and even when Richard Alpert tells her she needs to be sedated for her trip, she doesn’t turn back. She wakes up in a submarine, steps onto the dock, and is welcomed to the island by Ben. She is unable to keep any of the pregnant Others from dying, and after six months she wants to return home to see her sister. Ben tells her that her sister Rachel’s cancer has returned – but if Juliet agrees to stay on the island and complete her work, Jacob will ensure that Rachel is cured. When Juliet discovers the cancer on Ben’s spine, she accuses him of lying. The next day, Oceanic Flight 815 crashes. After Ben assigns Ethan and Goodwin (Juliet’s lover) to infiltrate the groups, he takes Juliet to the Flame station, where Mikhail is compiling information about the crash survivors. Ben shows Juliet a transmission with a newspaper dated that day in 2004 – and with Rachel, healthy and the mother of a young boy named Julian.

The Island: Sayid demands answers from Juliet, but Jack tells him not to press her. When the group returns to camp, Sawyer and the others are quite distrustful of Juliet, but they are soon distracted by Claire, who has fallen ill. Juliet claims that the illness is a side effects of the treatments she and Ethan gave Claire in order to save her life, and says that she can treat her with a cache of supplies Ethan left behind. Sayid and Sawyer follow her, but she is able to deflect their insistence for answers by pointing out that they do not want more blood on their hands. The treatment is successful, and the camp agrees to let Juliet stay temporarily. Jack says that he trusts her because he saw how badly she wanted to leave the island when Locke destroyed the submarine. And while Juliet does want to leave the island, there may be other things she wants more – or other ways she intends to get them.

Flashback: Desmond joins the novitiate of a monastery – a mere week before his wedding date with a girl named Ruth. Her brother tracks him down to the monastery and makes his point directly to Desmond’s nose. When he tries to explain himself to Ruth, she calls him a coward. That night, he drowns his sorrows in the monastery’s wine, and the monks decide that Desmond’s path leads elsewhere. As he’s leaving the monastery, he meets a young woman who has come to purchase several cases of wine . . . Penelope Widmore.

The Island: Jack spends time with Juliet as he adjusts to being back at the camp. Seeing this drives Kate back into Sawyer’s bed (metaphorically speaking, anyway). A conversation with Jack over a ping-pong match the next day leads Sawyer to understand the cause and effect relationship of those events, but he seems relatively untroubled by it.

Desmond has a series of precognitive flashes that end in Charlie’s death from one of Rousseau’s booby traps. But those flashes also hint that Penny is coming to the island in search of Desmond. Determined to ensure that the flashes hold true, Desmond convinces Hurley to help him find the cable into the jungle. He asks Jin and Charlie to accompany them as well, but offers as little information as possible. Desmond tries to tell himself that Charlie is destined to die anyway. But as the moment of truth nears, will he really be able to make that sacrifice?

Flashback: Shortly after her wedding to Jin, a woman approaches Sun and blackmails her: if Sun does not give her one hundred thousand dollars, she will reveal that Jin’s father is a fisherman, and her mother a prostitute. When Sun asks Jin about hi father, she spots discrepancies in his story, and ultimately she tracks down Jin’s father. Mr. Kwon is very happy to meet her and talk about the wedding, but he understands why Jin pretends that he is dead. Mr. Kwon wants to share his son any shame. This is why he told Jin that his mother died soon after he was born. Sun decides to ask her father for the money. He gives it to her, but when he realizes that Sun wants it to prevent Jin from being shamed, he declares that Jin will have to work off the debt by working more directly for him.

The Island: As Desmond, Charlie, Jin and Hurley attempt to help the parachutist, they discover that she was impaled on a tree branch. They argue about how to get her medical assistance, and Hurley accidentally fires a flare gun. A decidedly not-dead Mikhail soon bounds into the clearing. Jin tackles him and manages to take him down, at which point he offers Desmond a bargain: he will use his medical skills to save the parachutist’s life if Desmond agrees to let Mikhail walk away afterward, no questions asked.

Jack’s inquiries about Sun’s baby cause her concern; when she confides in Kate, she discovers what Juliet said about women who conceive on the island. Sun confronts Juliet, and that night Juliet offers to take Sun to the abandoned medical station. There is still equipment hidden there, and Juliet wants to find out when Sun conceived. If it was before she crashed, there is still hope. If not, the prognosis is grim. For Sun, however, there is much to fear from either result. If the date of conception is before the crash, then there is no way that Jin is the father.

Flashback: After seeing his father inside the Others’ compound, Locke relocates with the rest of them. Ben tells Locke of Juliet’s undercover work on the beach camp, and then demands that Locke kill his father in order to finally put his old life behind him. Ben calls it an act of free will and a sign of commitment – but it’s an act that Locke can not bring himself to perform. Ben claims that this means that Locke is not the person the group thought he was. The next day, Richard Alpert confides in Locke that Ben wanted to humiliate Locke, to reduce the threat to his authority. Alpert knows that the only way Locke will be able to do what he is meant to do is for his father to die. So he gives Locke a file that indicates that one of his fellow survivors might be the man for the job. The next day, Ben and the Others break camp, and tell Locke not to bother following them unless he has his father’s body in tow.

The Island: Naomi, the parachutist, tells her rescuers that Penn Widmore hired her company to do a detailed search around specific coordinates. Until Naomi happened to see the island, just before her copter failed, she thought it was a wild goose chase. She also tells them that Oceanic Flight 815 was found in a trench off the Pacific coast, and that robot surveyors found the bodies of all the passengers. Desmond, Charlie and Hurley do not trust Jack, so they confide in Sayid. Sayid gets Naomi’s satellite phone working, but can not find a clear channel. When Kate comes across him working, Sayid demands that she not tell Jack. Instead, she immediately confronts Jack and tells him about Naomi – and that no one trusts him because of Juliet’s presence. Juliet seems to think that this is a good time to tell Kate something, but Jack disagrees as he goes off to investigate Naomi’s condition further.

Locke approaches Sawyer overnight and tells him that he has infiltrated the Others and kidnapped Ben. He asks Sawyer to come with him in order to kill Ben. Sawyer agrees to follow him but has no intention of killing anyone – although Locke reminds him that he’s killed a man before. When they reach the Black Rock, Locke barricades Sawyer in the brig with his prisoner – who isn’t Ben, but rather the con man Locke knew as Anthony Cooper. Cooper believes himself to be dead, killed in a traffic accident, and now reunited with his dead son. As he talks to Sawyer about his exploits, Sawyer begins to suspect why Locke brought him here, and asks Cooper what names he’s used in the past. When the con man mentions Tom Sawyer, James Ford knows the moment he’s been waiting for has arrived – he’s face to face with the man he holds responsible for his parents’ death.

Flashback: A woman gives birth in the woods as her partner looks on. When the baby is finally born, the mother continues to bleed. Her partner, Roger, carries her and the baby to the highway and flags down a car for help, but before they can do anything she dies. Her last request is that Roger name the boy Benjamin.

Years later, Roger and Benjamin travel to the island to join the Dharma Initiative. Roger gets a job as a work man, but he is not happy about his work or the hazardous conditions that accompany Dharma’s conflict with the Hostiles. At some level, he also blames Ben for his partner’s death. Ben, meanwhile, has befriended a girl his own age named Annie – and he sees visions of his mother, telling him the time is not right for him to leave yet. When he can take it no longer, he sneaks out of his camp and beyond the sonic security fence – where he meets Richard Alpert, one of the Hostiles. Ben tells Richard his story, and Richard seems to believe it. So Ben says he wants to join Richard’s group – and Richard says that one day, he will have the opportunity. And when that day comes, Ben settles the conflict between Dharma and the Hostiles once and for all.

The Island: Sawyer brings the tape that Locke gave him back to Sayid, who quickly organizes the rest of the camp – except for Jack and Juliet – into a council. They are stunned to learn about Naomi and the news about Flight 815, and concerned about Juliet’s intentions. When Jack and Juliet return, Juliet tells Sawyer to play the other side of the tape – the ones with Ben’s instructions to wait for a raid on the camp. She has already told Jack about it, and Jack has a plan.

Locke arrives at the Others’ camp and demands answers. When Ben tells him about Jacob, Locke thinks he’s lying. He demands that Ben take him to Jacob, a demand he backs up by beating a returning Mikhail unconscious. Ben agrees; before they leave, Alex gives Locke a gun. They ultimately arrive at an old cottage, but when Ben brings Locke inside, all Locke sees is Ben talking to an empty chair. Locke considers this a sign of Ben’s insanity or dishonesty, but as he turns to go he hears a voice saying “Help me.” When Locke shines a flashlight in response, things start to fly across the room, but Locke still thinks it’s one of Ben’s tricks. On the way back to camp, Ben shows Locke the ditch where the members of the Dharma Initiative are laid to rest – and then shows Locke how seriously he takes both Jacob’s existence and Ben’s special relationship with him.

Flashback: Charlie reflects on his favorite memories: the first time he heard Driveshaft’s song on the radio; his father teaching him to swim; his brother giving him a family heirloom ring; saving a woman from a mugger; and meeting Claire.

The Island: Jack reveals his plan to the rest of the castaways – with Rousseau’s help, he has been gathering dynamite from the Black Rock. When the Others come to take the pregnant women, Jack intends to blow them up. Juliet tells Sayid that another Dharma station, the Looking Glass, is blocking the signal of Naomi’s satellite phone – but the station is supposedly flooded. Sayid figures that the Looking Glass is connected to the island via the cable on the beach and wants to swim down to shut off the signal, but Jack overrules him in order to focus on the dynamite plan. But when Karl arrives on the beach and tells them that an agitated Ben has moved up the timetable, plans change. Sayid and Bernard will stay behind and shoot at the dynamite to detonate it when the time comes, while Jack leads everyone else to the radio tower. Charlie volunteers to go swim to the Looking Glass, because Desmond has had a flash that Claire and Aaron get rescued after he does so – and after Charlie drowns.
