A Race Through Dark Places

Babylon 5At Psi-Corps’ headquarters on Mars, Bester interrogates a telepath for information on an underground railroad helping unregistered telepaths evade the Corps’ rigorous supervision. Bester goes to B5, which he believes these telepaths are using as a way station. The underground railroad does turn out to be running through B5, and the telepaths try to kill Bester, who manages to take cover, though Talia is kidnapped. The rogue telepaths are more organized than anyone has realized, and they have a friend on the station – Dr. Franklin. Bester closes in on the telepaths’ hiding place DownBelow, and the telepaths can only escape alive if they can convince Talia to rebel against the Psi Corps.

Note: There is a hint that the gift given to Talia by Jason Ironheart in Mind War consisted not only of telekinesis, but also an involuntary shield from telepathic scans, though this could also be attributed to a revelation made in Divided Loyalties. The lurker who is the head of the underground railroad is the same one who tipped Garibaldi off on the whereabouts of Devereaux in Chrysalis.

The Coming of Shadows

Babylon 5When the Emperor of the Centauri decides to pay a surprise visit to B5, G’Kar decides to assassinate him. And he’s not the only one with designs on the throne. Refa, a power-hungry associate of Londo’s, wants Londo to deliver an address that will decry the Emperor’s politics, a speech which will be remembered after the Emperor’s death, already planned by Refa and his backers. But before the Emperor can even be touched by either party, he falls ill for the final time. In medlab, he entrusts Franklin to deliver a pledge of peace to G’Kar. Meanwhile, Refa panics, fearing that a competing assassin has struck first. Londo offers to summon the Shadows to conquer a Narn colony in quadrant 14, and Refa sends a flotilla of Centauri warships to claim the territory. Arriving Narn ships are shot down by the Centauri, and the Narn respond by declaring war on the Centauri. And it is revealed – though only to Garibaldi – that Sinclair is on Minbar, preparing for the coming of the Shadows. His warning, though it cannot be revealed to anyone else is to beware…and stay close to the Vorlon.

GROPOS

Babylon 5A flotilla of Earthforce ships arrives at B5 to prepare for a top-secret raid on the planet Akdor, which has not only requested aid from Earth to quell a civil war, but is also conveniently close to Narn and Centauri territories in the event Earth should take a more active role in the emerging war. 25,000 Earthforce Marines are billeted at the station for a few days awaiting their mission – of which they know nothing – and they wreak havoc, crowd the station crew, start bar brawls, and threaten Delenn, among other things. Not all of the ground-pounders are bad, as one falls for Garibaldi, and an odd couple of a seasoned veteran and a rookie befriend Lt. Keffer. The man leading the GroPos into battle is General Richard Franklin, a distinguished Earthforce soldier who hopes to spend his entire stay at B5 avoiding his estranged son.

All Alone In The Night

Babylon 5Ships belonging to various races have been disappearing in B5’s vicinity, and Sheridan decides to check the area out personally, despite the imminent arrival of General Hague, a member of Earthforce’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. At the same time, Delenn has been summoned to a meeting of the Grey Council to determine whether she merits membership in that body after her metamorphosis. Sheridan is captured by a large, organic-looking vessel whose occupants do not show themselves, but simply conduct experiments on their prisoners, testing their endurance and their potential threat. Sheridan manages to free a Narn captive from the aliens’ influence, while on B5 General Hague and Ivanova prepare to mount a rescue. Delenn has been dismissed from the Grey Council, but is allowed to continue her role as the Minbari ambassador to B5 – and she has the key to retrieving Sheridan.

Acts Of Sacrifice

Babylon 5The Centauri-Narn War is heating up, and B5, with a sizeable population of both aboard, is also becoming an uneasy place. Both Centauri and Narn are gearing up to attack each other hand-to-hand, and both of their ambassadors know that violence on the station will serve no purpose in the war. G’Kar fights with his own people to persuade them to be at peace, or to enlist in the military if they feel there’s no other option but to fight. Londo, on the other hand, is having difficulty coping with his newfound respect among the Centauri – and the fear he seems to elicit from everyone else. Despite G’Kar’s pleas for aid or alliances from the other major powers, it becomes apparent that his posturing in the past has convinced the other governments to remain neutral.

Hunter, Prey

Babylon 5B5 becomes the site of an intense manhunt when special government agents from Earth arrive in pursuit of a refugee who was a personal physician of the late President Santiago. A member of General Hague’s patriot underground contacts Sheridan in private and reveals that the real reason Dr. Jacobs is being hunted down is that he has evidence that the then-vice-president was not at all sick when he claimed to be too ill to follow Santiago on the tour which ended with the destruction of Earthforce One. Muddying the waters even further, Sheridan asks Garibaldi and Franklin to go undercover and find Jacobs themselves, but they only discover that the elderly doctor has wandered into even more trouble DownBelow. During all of this, Sheridan notices that the once-reclusive Ambassador Kosh is now watching him very, very closely.

There All The Honor Lies

Babylon 5Sheridan unwittingly walks into a trap set by two Minbari, in which he is forced to kill one of them in self-defense as the other witnesses the event. Immediately, all hell breaks loose when the Minbari government presses charges of murder, threatening to reignite the hostility between the two races. Even worse, Delenn’s insistence that Minbari do not lie further clouds the issue as the surviving witness insists that Sheridan killed his fellow Minbari in cold blood. Earthforce seems eager to stand by and let Sheridan be accused of the killing rather than offering official support. Even Kosh, who is tutoring Sheridan for purposes unknown, offers the captain no more help than another lesson. It falls upon Delenn and Lennier – who is in the difficult position of belonging to the same Minbari clan as the accuser – to find out if Sheridan is being framed.

And Now For A Word

Babylon 5An ISN reporter with a camera crew in tow makes a visit to B5 to observe 36 hours in the station’s life. What they’re not counting on is a sudden escalation of the hostilities between the Narn and Centauri immediately outside of the station which will ultimately result in the first Earth Alliance shots fired in the war, a possible first step in the human race becoming more involved with the conflict. As Sheridan and the other races’ representatives grapple with the increasing bloodshed, a journalist is occasionally getting in the way, just looking for a good story. In The Shadow of Z’Ha’Dum

Babylon 5Sheridan is going over the records of his late wife’s doomed expedition to the rim when Garibaldi recognizes a face from the ship’s crew manifest – Morden, the mysterious human with whom Londo consults in matters concerning the Narn-Centauri War. Sheridan has Morden stopped before he can leave the station again and confined, and begins questioning him intensely regarding the fate of the mission. Morden has no memories of the expedition or of Anna Sheridan, and is impatient to be on his way, but Sheridan will not let him go. Instead, the captain keeps Morden detained over Garibaldi’s protests and finally his resignation, tricks Talia into scanning Morden, and denies an urgent request from Londo to release the prisoner. It is only when Delenn and Kosh reveal a tale of the long-forgotten horror of the Shadows that Sheridan realizes that his imprisonment of Morden could invite the wrath of a power no one can repel.

Divided Loyalties

Babylon 5A ship drifts through the jumpgate near B5 and must be towed in since it has sustained heavy battle damage. Its one occupant turns out to be Lyta Alexander, the commercial telepath originally assigned to B5 until her contact with Ambassador Kosh left her disoriented and possibly mentally unstable. Having fled Psi Corps and joined a resistance group on Mars, Lyta has learned of a sleeper spy aboard the station – someone who, thanks to a telepathically implanted personality that can’t be detected even on a deep mind-scan, is reporting back to Psi Corps and probably to the engineers of President Santiago’s assassination as well. Sheridan initially dismisses Lyta’s warning until an unknown assailant tries to kill her, neatly corroborating her story that the implanted personality will do or say anything to protect itself. Lyta does have the key to unlock the secret of who is carrying the personality known only as “Control” – a password which, when transmitted directly by telepathy, will reveal the secondary personality at the cost of destroying the “real” one. Ivanova balks at the prospect of being scanned, reluctantly revealing to Sheridan that she is a latent telepath who has evaded detection by Psi Corps for years. The command staff agrees to Lyta’s telepathic probe, and one by one they turn up free of any Psi Corps influence. And then Lyta has the opportunity to scan Talia…

The Long, Twilight Struggle

Babylon 5Londo has been recalled to Centauri Prime for consultations on the war effort. Current plans call for allowing the Narn to direct their entire fleet toward the Centauri supply planet as the bulk of the Centauri fleet converges on the Narn homeworld – and Refa expects Londo to deploy his “associates” to defend the Centauri supply world. In the meantime, Sheridan and Delenn are contacted by Draal, the Minbari who took over custodianship of the buried technological treasures of Epsilon 3. He wishes to pledge his allegiance to Sheridan in the coming war, even though Sheridan himself is still uncertain what role he will play in that conflict. The Narn fleet, led by G’Kar’s uncle, attacks the Centauri supply base only to be wiped out by the Shadows, who appear to be gaining more strength with each appearance. In the meantime, a Centauri fleet – one of whose ships carries Londo as a first-hand observer – begins bombarding Narn with mass drivers, laying the entire planet to waste. The nation of Narn again falls to its knees at the whim of the Centauri Republic.

Comes The Inquisitor

Babylon 5Delenn is summoned by Kosh, who cryptically informs her that he has called for an inquisitor from the Vorlon homeworld, an interrogator who will determine Delenn’s true allegiances and motivations in her preparation for the coming war. Sheridan greets the visitor, who presumably will be another Vorlon – though the newcomer turns out to be human. And not just any human, but a human from the 19th century who claims to have been whisked away from Earth by the Vorlons. The interrogation of Delenn begins, and turns out to be a far more brutal affair than expected as Sebastian tortures her for what he deems “inadequate” answers to his very ambiguous, nearly metaphysical questions. While Delenn barely endures the test she does not understand, G’Kar is quietly struggling to maintain control of the Narn on the station, who are pooling all their resources to build an underground resistance on the conquered Narn homeworld. Finally, Sheridan interferes in Delenn’s inquisition – and his intervention has been anticipated.
