Alien Worlds Season 1

The Sunstealers – Part 1

Alien WorldsAboard the Starlab space station orbiting Earth, research director Maura Cassidy finds herself in the midst of extraordinary events when all of the station’s instruments indicate that the sun is collapsing. The entire inner solar system fleet of the International Space Authority depends on solar energy, as does Earth itself, and preparations are made to send an expedition to take closer measuresments and perhaps find out the cause. Captain Graydon leads the mission, though Cassidy is less than thrilled to learn that his co-pilot will be Captain Griff, a man who she holds responsible for her father’s death on a past expedition. Though they are warned of the possibility by an excitable scientist named Tim, Graydon and Griff are still stunned to find a new planetoid inside the orbit of Venus, occupied by the insectoid Marcabs, who care nothing that their rapid “mining” of the sun will spell doom for humanity.

written by Mike Hodel and Lee Hansen
directed by Lee Hansen
music by Jim Kirk

Cast: Roger Dressler (Narrator), Linda Gary (Maura Cassidy), Bruce Phillip Miller (Captain Jon Graydon), Corey Burton (Jerry Lyden), Chuck Olsen (Captain Buddy Griff), Jeff Allen (Tim), Stu Jacobs (Zarr Khonar), Tom Rounds (Gargon)

Notes: Starlab’s formal name is the Arthur C. Clarke Astronomical Observatory. Alien Worlds was syndicated to radio stations across America (and elsewhere in the English-speaking world) by Watermark, a radio syndication company that had already made its fame as the originators of America’s Top 40 with Casey Kasem. (Kasem himself would guest star in a later episode of Alien Worlds.) Though not as universally popular as Kasem’s pop music countdown show, Alien Worlds was popular enough to merit two full seasons; production was brought to a halt and the series was cancelled after four installments of a third season had been produced. Corey Burton’s voice acting career continues to this day, and he can be heard in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and dozens of video games.

Night Riders Of Kalimar – Part 1

Alien WorldsWord of a glowstone strike reaches the prospectors gathered at the Rising Star Saloon on the asteroid Vesta, setting off a new gold rush. Miners beat a hasty path to the asteroid Kalimar, and the ISA sends Maura, Graydon and Buddy to Kalimar as well, giving Maura a chance to study glowstone up close for the first time. They meet up with Buddy’s old friend, cardsharp Travis Silverthorn, also en route to Kalimar, hoping to hustle the newly-rich miners at the poker table. When they arrive at Kalimar, however, it appears that the miners have already become victims, but with considerably higher stakes. The Night Riders of Kalimar, eyeless predatory lizards, have come for them all.

Alien WorldsSurrounded by the natives of Kalimar, Maura and Travis Silverthorn are cut off from the rest of the crew. The Resurrectionists Of Lethe – Part 1

Alien WorldsDr. Richard Nicholson stops by Starlab en route to an award ceremony on Earth, where he will be honored for a major biomolecular breakthrough. But his celebration is short-lived: a toxic fuel leak aboard the shuttle due to carry him to Earth kills Nicholson as his wife, who had been speaking to him via radio, listens. Nicholson is deemed worthy of being buried on the artificial mortuarty satellite, Lethe, whose administrator, Simon Toddmaster, invites Nicholson’s widow to Lethe, with an unusual promise that she will see her dead husband live again.

written by Ron Thompson

directed by Lee Hansen
music by Jim Kirk

Cast: Roger Dressler (Narrator / Commissioner), Linda Gary (Maura Cassidy), Bruce Phillip Miller (Captain Jon Graydon), Corey Burton (Jerry Lyden), Chuck Olsen (Captain Buddy Griff), Hans Conreid (Simon Toddmaster), Susan Brown (Ann Nicholson), George DiCenzo (Dr. Richard Nicholson), Cliff Norton (Burkey), Jack Lukes (Carl), Sally Smaller (Mr. Thorndancer)

Notes: Prior to his stint as the head of the Lethe satellite, Toddmaster had previously served prison time for smuggling glowstone (Night Riders Of Kalimar). From the “vintage 1970s humor” file: former President Richard Nixon is apparently interred on Lethe, and left an “18 minute last will and testament tape”…which Toddmaster is unsurprised to discover is blank. Unusually for Alien Worlds, an exact date is given for this episode (April 28, 2026).

The Resurrectionists Of Lethe – Part 2

Alien WorldsSimon Toddmaster has turned the mortuary satellite, Lethe, into a horrifying means of gathering classified intelligence. By using replicants to seemingly bring the dead back to life, and inviting their loved ones to come and discuss their lives and work with them, Toddmaster records information that would otherwise have died with the deceased. If he can get Dr. Nicholson’s widow to reveal the whereabouts of his research, Toddmaster will gain a recipe for potent biological weapons. Maura, Graydon and Buddy set out to stop him.

The Keeper Of Eight – Part 1

Alien WorldsConducting experiments with hydrogen plasma in two small, self-contained space station labs positioned safely away from Starlab, Maura and physicist Dr. Paul Kramer are startled when a large, bat-like, jet-black spacecraft approaches them. Kramer’s lab pod is destroyed, while Maura is caught outside in the middle of a spacewalk. Examining a new ISA vehicle, the Solaris, Graydon and Buddy receive the distress signal and set out in the Solaris to help. Maura is found barely alive inside the hydrogren tank in her lab pod – a tank with no opening large enough for a human being to enter. As she tries to find out what happened to her, a non-corporeal being of pure energy named Echo appears, revealing that it transported her inside the tank to save her life. As for the black spacecraft, its occupants, the Draconians, want more hydrogen…and they’re planning to steal it from Earth’s atmosphere.
