Valley Of Darkness

Battlestar GalacticaWith the crew still reeling from a firefight – one in which a larger-than-usual Cylon vehicle actually managed to slam into one of Galactica’s flight pods – the Battlestar is ripe for boarding. Cylon Centurions emerge from their crashed vehicle and quickly start to take over strategic parts of the ship, shutting off power and vital systems as they go and killing anyone who gets in the way. Galactica’s Marine contingent fights back, rescuing Apollo and some of his fellow pilots, the still-jailed President Roslin, and several others, but they’re still unable to escape to safer parts of the ship. And if the Cylons manage to reach controls that would allow them to vent Galactica’s entire atmosphere into space, no part of the ship will be safe. On Caprica, with Boomer having fled in her stolen Cylon ship, Starbuck finds her father’s abandoned home and takes time to reflect on what has been lost. And on Kobol, even with mounting casualties, Baltar is more horrified when he experiences a vision of Commander Adama killing the baby that Number Six says is the shape of things to come.

Flight Of The Phoenix

Battlestar GalacticaEven after the recent reuniting of the Colonial fleet, nerves are frayed and tempers flare aboard Galactica. Chief Tyrol and Lt. Helo finally come to blows over their shared feelings for Boomer, and Starbuck finds herself defending Helo’s actions to the rest of the fighter pilots. President Roslin’s latest diagnosis brings grim news: she has mere weeks to live, and there’s no guarantee that her cancer won’t spread to her brain and rob her of her ability to lead the fleet. Tyrol has been occupying himself with a new project as well, attempting to fabricate a new Viper from the few materials available, and finds that some of his crewmates think he’s wasting time and resources. To make matters worse, Galactica’s systems are infected by an adaptive Cylon computer virus, which begins to execute numerous options to try to kill the crew. Commander Adama, despite his distrust and lingering rage over Boomer, decides to seek her help in fighting the virus – with no guarantee that she won’t deliver Galactica to an approaching Cylon fleet.

Scar

Battlestar GalacticaAfter discovering a rich source of tyllium ore in an asteroid belt, a mining ship and Galactica are assigned to gather the raw materials needed to replenish the fleet; Pegasus takes the rest of the Colonial fleet out of harm’s way. But four weeks into the mining operation, there is already a high cost in lives: a battered but vicious Cylon Raider lurks among the asteroids, picking off Galactica’s fighters one by one in relentless sneak attacks. Starbuck has to begin planning an operation to take out this fighter, nicknamed “Scar” for its beaten hull, but finds that she has competition in the form of Lt. “Kat” Katraine, who thinks Starbuck has lost her edge and isn’t afraid to challenge her senior officer even in a packed briefing room. As quickly as Galactica’s pilots’ roster can be replenished by recruits from Pegasus, Scar is killing more pilots and destroying more fighters. Wracked with guilt over leading Anders and the resistance behind on Caprica, and drinking more and more heavily to drown her anguish, Starbuck has to face the possibility that even her hotshot flying may not be enough to kill Scar.

Notes: “Jolly,” mentioned here as the one of Galactica’s deceased pilots, was also the call sign of a Viper pilot in the original Battlestar Galactica series, played by Tony Swartz. Colonial mining of tyllium ore, and even the shape of the ships that accomplish that task, also date back to the original show. We learn in this episode that the Cylon Raiders can be resurrected much like the human models can.

Downloaded

Battlestar GalacticaWeeks after the Cylon attack on Caprica, in a resurrection vat, Number Six is reborn – the Six who seduced Baltar and obtained the information that allowed the Cylons to attack. She’s unnerved from her last memory – dying while protecting Baltar from the shockwave of a nuclear blast – but her fellow Cylons assure her that she is considered a hero. Months later, a new copy of Sharon is resurrected, and this one downloads the memories of the Sharon who shot Commander Adama at point-blank range on Galactica and was later gunned down herself. Also hailed as a Cylon hero, Sharon finds herself unable to accept her true nature and is left to herself without any new assignments. The new copy of Six is given a new task, though: she has to talk Sharon out of her slump so she can return to her duties. But when Six tries to do this, she experiences visits from Baltar, visits only she can see or feel, and he begins to chip away at her unwavering loyalty to the Cylons. When Six and Sharon find themselves in a position to do away with a troublesome human guerilla named Anders, that loyalty is finally put to the test.

The Resistance – Webisode 1

Battlestar Galactica (New Series)Just over two months after the Cylon takeover of New Caprica, Tigh and Tyrol are quietly recruiting soldiers for a resistance effort and trying to gather weapons in secret. But not all of their recruits have survived, some of the weapons have been captured, and even among Galactica’s former Viper pilots, it’s becoming harder to find would-be heroes.

Notes: Designed to rebuild interest in the show after a longer-than-usual summer break – Galactica’s third season premiered not in July alongside new episodes from the Stargate franchise, but in October – the Resistance “webisodes” were posted on Sci-Fi Channel’s web site every Tuesday and Thursday. Early on, production of the webisodes hit a snag when a dispute arose between the Writer’s Guild of America and NBC Universal over reuse fees for web-only content; the WGA issued a notice to its members insisting that they not write scripts for web-exclusive material. The result was a two-month delay in production during which Universal filed a grievance against the WGA with the National Labor Relations Board. The outcome of that dispute has yet to be made public, though it delayed Sci-Fi’s rollout of the webisodes long enough to compress the release schedule to two per week, instead of the original intention to release one per week. Director Wayne Rose had already been serving as Galactica’s second unit director on several past episodes. Co-writer Bradley Thompson has said that the original title for the webisode story was Crossroads.

Exodus – Part 1

Battlestar GalacticaTyrol puts together a team to rescue Cally and the other human captives of the Cylons who are due for an arbitrary execution – an execution intended to draw the resistance out of hiding. Nearby on New Caprica, Adama’s choice to coordinate resistance efforts on the ground arrives – Sharon. Tyrol manages to save Cally, and Tom Zarek yanks Roslin out of harm’s way, but others aren’t so lucky – including the human Cylon in charge of the execution. Evidence that the resistance was sold out also surfaces – and it leads straight to Ellen Tigh. Sharon uses her familiar face to her advantage, infiltrating the Cylon headquarters to retrieve the launch keys from the Colonial ships grounded on New Caprica, only to be confronted by a fellow Cylon, who tells her that her baby, who she thought died, is alive and well.
