The Whispering Forest

Doctor Who: The Whispering ForestTrying to track down the surviving carrier of Richter’s Disease from Hellheim, the TARDIS brings the Doctor and his friends – with Nyssa once again aboard the TARDIS – to an alien forest. The Doctor and Tegan are taken to Purity, a village in turmoil in the wake of its leader’s disappearance. While the locals are concerned with the implications of two “unclean” visitors, they also fear the Takers and observe almost-ritual hygenic cleansing practices. Nyssa and Turlough meet more locals from Purity, but they also encounter the Takers, who seem to be far more advanced and powerful. The Doctor and Tegan are caught up in the succession struggle in the village of Purity, and their lives are threatened at every turn by a pretender to the throne who thinks they’ll bring infection and death with them.

Demon Quest Part 1: The Relics Of Time

Doctor Who: The Relics Of TimeThe Doctor returns to Nest Cottage for a break from his travels, but when he’s ready to set off into time and space once more, he’s horrified to discover that his housekeeper, Mrs. Wibbsey, has sold a component of the TARDIS at a local charity sale. And there’s another mystery: a photograph of a first-century tile mosaic clearly depicting the Doctor’s face. Free to travel in time but relatively fixed in space because of the missing spatial geometer, the Doctor and Mrs. Wibbsey travel back to the first century where they are mistaken for Druids with supernatural powers – and during an attempt to pass herself off as a seer, Mrs. Wibbsey says some unusual things about a wizard with a demonic pet. Under threat of their own deaths, the Doctor and Mrs. Wibbsey are sent to slay the wizard and his beast. Instead, they find a strangely genial Roman Emperor from the wrong period of history who knows far more about the future than he should.

Timeline: after Hive Of Horror and before The Demon Of Paris, and probably still before The Ribos Operation

Notes: Nest Cottage, in the village of Hexford, seems to be the fourth Doctor’s retreat from his time travels, but since his third incarnation, the Doctor has also maintained a (usually unoccupied) residence on Allen Road in Kent, a story development that gave the Doctor a base of operations in several pieces of ’90s Doctor Who novels and comics.

K-9 Season 1

Angel Of The North

K-9An unusual disturbance in space and time is detected, affecting everything in Gryffen’s lab – everything except K-9. The epicenter of the disturbance is in the northernmost reaches of Canada – near the crashed spacecraft from which Gryffen salvaged the interdimensional transport equipment in his lab. Despite his phobia of setting foot outside his lab, Gryffen contacts the Department and all but begs to take an expedition to Canada, hoping to find the final piece of alien technology that will bring the interdimensional transport under his control, and perhaps even send K-9 home. Inspector Thorne agrees to Gryffen’s request – perhaps too eagerly – and joins the Professor on his journey. K-9 and Starkey decide to go to Canada by other means in case Gryffen needs help. When they learn the identity of the alien race whose technology Gryffen has been researching, everyone will need help.

Notes: This episode establishes that, like the actor who portrays him, Professor Gryffen is from Canada.

K-9 Season 1

The Last Precinct

K-9A wave of incidents spreads through London, often involving CCPCs being disabled by a group calling itself the Last Precinct. CCPCs raid Gryffen’s lab, blast K-9 and take hostages, but they’re not looking for evidence – in fact, some of them aren’t CCPCs at all. Two humans remove CCPC uniforms and reveal themselves as members of the Last Precinct: the last London Metro Police officers remaining when the Department relieved all human police of duty to replace them with CCPCs. Pike is also Darius’ father, though the two barely acknowledge one another after years of estrangement. Pike has an ace up his sleeve, however: a computer virus that will put all of the CCPCs in London under his control. But who engineered that virus… and will deploying it actually help his aim of demonstrating the unreliability of CCPCs to the public, or will it only unleash an even more dangerous situation?

Guest Cast: Robyn Moore (Inspector June Turner), Jared Robinsen (Thorne), Chris Betts (Pike), Lloyd Morris (Halloran), Jason McNamara (Green Hand), Josh Norbido (CCPC), Eugen Bekafigo (CCPC), Tyler Rostedt (CCPC), Simon Preston-Barnes (CCPC)

The Last PrecinctNotes: The CCPCs are revealed to be cyborgs – cybernetic organisms – in this episode, and mention is made of cloning centers that produce the CCPCs. Even more menacing is the fact that someone has been integrating alien biotechnology into the latest round of CCPCs cloned. As the CCPC raid on the last police precinct in London happened only two years ago, back when Gryffen’s lab was that police station, it’s reasonable to assume that Gryffen’s occupancy of the building is very recent, despite enough clutter to suggest that he’s been there for years.

K-9 Season 1

Hound Of The Korven

K-9Darius is awakened by Inspector Thorne – a bit of a shock, since Thorne is on Gryffen’s property – who tries to sway Darius’ loyalty with a chance to see how his father is handling a stay in the Department’s virtual reality prison. Thorne’s price for this favor seems simple: he wants a piece of K-9’s circuitry, a piece he claims won’t be missed. And Thorne has something to tempt K-9 into cooperating as well: a memory chip that K-9 is missing.

But the circuit Thorne wants is the regeneration unit that restored K-9 in his new form. Even with his father’s freedom on the line, Darius knows this isn’t an even exchange. K-9 makes the trade anyway, and when he accesses the chip that supposedly contains his missing memory, the trap is sprung: a trojan horse program that takes over K-9’s programming, turning him into a mobile bomb dedicated to taking out an enemy of the Department’s choosing. And it can hardly be a coincidence that a lone Jixen has returned to Earth to find Starkey…

K-9 Season 1

The Eclipse Of The Korven

K-9The dimensional gateway in Gryffen’s lab activates of its own accord, but its energy is twisted, forming anembryonic black hole and a white hole in mid-air. K-9 predicts that Earth will be destroyed when the two converge – something that should take only 20 minutes. K-9 races to find out what Thorne is doing, certain that Thorne’s double-cross to gain possession of his regeneration unit is part of what is happening. He finds that Thorne also has another dimensional gateway similar to the one that Gryffen has pieced together, but much larger, and intended for a more sinister purpose: Thorne will use it to give his alien masters the means to invade Earth. He’s even anticipated every countermeasure Gryffen will use to close all of the dimensional portals, and has planned accordingly. K-9 will have to make an unthinkable sacrifice to save the world, and this time without his regeneration unit.

written by Shayne Armstrong & S.P. Krause
directed by David Napier
music by Christopher Elves

Guest Cast: Robyn Moore (June Turner), Connor Van Vuuren (Drake), Matthew Reimer (Korven Leader), Josh Norbido (CCPC), Jason McNamara (CCPC), Eugen Bekafigo (CCPC), Michael Donnet (CCPC), Tyler Rostedt (CCPC), Jarod Grodecki (CCPC)

Notes: Several elements planted through the entire season have been leading up to this episode: the missing element of the Korven-built gateway (Angel Of The North), Thorne’s involvement in the Department prison that held the Meron (Liberation), the virus that unleashed the CCPCs from human control (The Last Precinct), K-9’s regeneration unit (Regeneration / Hound Of The Korven), and Gryffen’s gradual fight against his agoraphobia (almost the entire season). For the first time, K-9 appears with the plaid collar similar to the one he wore in his original form in the Doctor’s company – perhaps a coincidence, or perhaps evidence that he has begun to recover some of his memories. The second and third Greek letters of Gryffen’s verbal deactivation code are sigma theta: whether coincidentally or not, a reversal of the Doctor’s Gallifreyan nickname, Theta Sigma (The Armageddon Factor).

The Book of Kells

Doctor Who: The Book of KellsThe TARDIS is dragged off course to the year 1006, a year in which no one on Earth should have technology capable of doing so. The Doctor and Tamsin find themselves near the Abbey of Kells, a site from which, according to history, the Book of Kells is about to be stolen. The Doctor and Tamsin immediately find signs that something is amiss: the remains of a vortisaur are found in the abbey, and murderous plots are overheard nearby. Worse yet, technology that shouldn’t exist on Earth for at a millennium is hidden away in the abbey’s secret passages. The Doctor realizes that they’re very near the point at which history records the theft of the Book of Kells, so he’s convinced that another time traveler is here to take the legendary religious artifact. While he does find another time traveler – and a familiar one at that – the true fate of the Book of Kells just isn’t that simple…

Project: Destiny

Doctor Who: Project: DestinyThe Doctor and Ace rush the critically injured Hex back to his own time, to St. Gart’s, the hospital where the time travelers first met Hex. The TARDIS slips a little too far forward in time, however, and arrives in 2026. St. Gart’s is closed down at the heart of a quarantine zone, and the streets of London are deserted. Using his sonic screwdriver, the Doctor breaks into the hospital and gets ready to operate on Hex himself, only to be interrupted by armored soldiers in the employ of Department C4 – once known as The Forge. Nimrod, now a public figure using his real name or Sir William Abberton, is still in charge, seeking a solution to a widespread mutation of humans into insect-like life forms. In the absence of a cure, Nimrod is happy to treat the outbreak as a pest control situation, and he’s also delighted to learn that the Doctor has never told Hex about how his mother died. When the Doctor himself becomes infected with the mutation, Hex fights to keep the Doctor calm to prevent the mutation from taking hold. Nimrod, on the other hand, wants to see the mutation process first-hand and eliminate his arch-enemy at the same time…

But the Doctor’s best intentions have even worse results: the Mara takes over his mind instead. The Doctor, under the Mara’s influence, pilots the TARDIS to Manussa, the homeworld of the Mara’s empire… over a century before that empire will come into being. While Tegan is found to be free of the Mara’s influence, the possessed Doctor is working behind the scenes to ensure that the Mara will hold thrall over the entire planet, using Manussa’s mass media as the vehicle for the Mara’s message. Slowly gathering allies and power, the Mara prepares to take over the minds of the Manussans, even if it rewrites history by bringing the Sumaran Empire about too early. Unvanquished

CapricaThree weeks after the attempted suicide of his wife Amanda and Tomas Vergis’ takeover of his company, Daniel Graystone is adrift and alone. The Cylon body containing the consciousness of his daughter has been critically damaged in its attempt to escape from his lab, and what’s recovered no longer shows any signs of higher intelligence – it’s merely a fighting drone. Vergis seals his victory by putting the Cylon into mass production, delivering to the government the perfect robot soldier that Graystone could never complete.

Graystone turns to the Guatrau, the Tauron crime lord for whom Sam Adama works. He offers the Taurons a stake in a technology that could promise immortality, but is unwilling to wash his hands in the blood of others in order to demonstrate his loyalty. On Gemenon, Sister Clarice Willow is making precisely the same pitch, but to a larger and more powerful body: the church itself. By promising nothing less than the realization of resurrection and eternal life, she opens the door to more power than she even knows how to harness.

The Nightmare Man – Part 1

The Sarah Jane AdventuresEncouraged by one of his teachers to take his A-levels early, Luke not only succeeds with flying colors, but is accepted in Oxford at what seems like an alarmingly young age (not taking into account that he’s not entirely human). Suddenly, he’s only days away from moving away from home, but something else is scaring him: repeated visits from an entity that he’s sure is going to try to destroy the world. This man appears only in his nightmares and warns Luke that the boy’s nightmares are feeding the being power. And then one night, Luke discovers that he isn’t just dreaming these encounters: the Nightmare Man is real.

The Vault Of Secrets – Part 1

The Sarah Jane AdventuresA young girl breaks into a high-tech complex disguised as a crumbling building in London, and is chased out of the building by three suited men with guns mounted on their decidedly artificial arms. When the girl is outside, she collapses in exhaustion – and notorious intergalactic criminal Androvax the Destroyer is revealed as having commandeered her body. He gives his pursuers the slip and flees.

Androvax next appears on Bannerman Road, where he takes over Rani’s body and asks Sarah Jane for help. The men pursuing him have locked Androvax’s entire civilization, the Veils, into a hyperdimensional vault, fearing that all of his people will be capable of the same crimes as Androvax himself. Since the android men in black are expecting Androvax, he needs Sarah’s help to free the Veils. But it’s only once Sarah, Clyde and Rani have been noticed by the men in black that it becomes apparent that Androvax isn’t telling them everything.

Guest Cast: Mina Anwar (Gita Chandra), Ace Bhatti (Haresh Chandra), Angus Wright (Mister Dread), Mark Goldthorp (Androvax), Cheryl Campbell (Ocean Waters), David Webber (Minty), Sophie Benjamin (Gill)

Notes: Androvax first appeared in the season 3 opener Prisoner Of The Judoon. Sarah gives MR. Smith the task of jamming transmission from NASA’s Mars Rover (presumably the Opportunity rover, since its identical twin, Spirit, has been marooned in Martian sand since April 2009); if Mr. Smith hadn’t accomplished this task, a large pyramid would’ve been visible in transmissions returned to Earth. Since Sarah says the pyramids was constructed by an ancient and “terrible” civilization, it’s presumably one of the Pyramids of Mars constructed by the Osirans, which Sarah herself visited with the fourth Doctor in the 1976 Doctor Who story of the same name. In this episode, Tommy Knight appears as Luke via webcam only.
