Star Trek ClassicStardate 4513.3: The Enterprise is taken over by Crewman Norman, who turns out to be an android in disguise. He sets the ship on a course back to his home world, a planet populated entirely by androids – and one Harry Mudd, trapped there after a crash-landing. The androids plan to move out beyond their own planet to populate the galaxy with more of their logical, efficient kind, and the Enterprise is their chosen means of transport. Kirk, although understandably suspicious of Harry, must now cooperate with the con-man if the android invasion is to be stopped. Once Upon A Planet

Star Trek ClassicStardate 5591.2: Captain Kirk orders a layover for the Enterprise at the still unnamed world where his crew visited once before, an idyllic, Earthlike planet whose massive computer can create whatever fantasy its visitors desire. But not long after the crew’s shore leave begins, things begin to go horribly wrong – McCoy is almost killed by something that he most certainly didn’t fantasize about, and Uhura is kidnapped by some kind of robot. The transporter is able to retrieve everyone except Uhura, so Kirk launches a rescue mission. But when he tries to find the Keeper, the planet’s humanoid custodian, he discovers that the Keeper has died – and no one may be able to regain control of the planet’s computer…or rescue the Enterprise’s communications officer.

Starlost, The

Circuit Of Death

The StarlostAn alarm sounds, alerting anyone listening to the presence of intruders on the bridge’s circuit room – intruders who are bypassing the failsafes on the Ark’s self-destruct system. Though Devon doesn’t understand the technical terminology, he, Garth and Rachel know that it’s reason enough to race back to the bridge. They find an electronics tech named Richards, along with his daughter Valerie, tampering with the circuitry, and Richards cons them into helping him load an escape vehicle supposedly intended for dumping the Ark’s logs in the event of a catastrophic emergency. But while Devon and his friends are from a relatively backward society, they’re not fools – an unmanned log dump wouldn’t require food and supplies. Richards and his daughter, fleeing from political oppression, are planning to destroy the Ark and make their own escape. But when the escape vehicle proves to be as damaged as the rest of the Ark, Richards is stuck – and now he has to undo the damage he’s done to the failsafe systems to initiate self-destruct, and he only has a “primitive” like Devon to help him.

Escape The Floating Continent

Star BlazersD minus 361 days: The Argo’s warp past Mars takes it too close to Jupiter, and the ship is pulled into the huge planet’s atmosphere, sustaining even more damage in the process. Just when it looks as though the Argo will be crushed in the intense pressure of Jupiter’s lower atmosphere, an impossible solution presents itself – a large land mass afloat in the atmosphere. But this convenient repair stop proves to be too convenient, for the continent is also home to a well-armed secret Gamilon tactical base. Captain Avatar sees the Gamilon threat as a perfect target on which to test the powerful wave motion gun, a piece of Iscandar technology which is so powerful, it drains all power from every other system aboard the Argo immediately before and after firing.

Amazing Stories Season 1

The Mission

Amazing StoriesAn American B-17 Flying Fortress takes off from an Allied airstrip in Europe, patrolling the skies during World War II. It’s the last flight for her Captain and crew, who have flown 23 successful sorties over Europe; after their 24th, most of them are going home. But a mid-air dogfight puts their future plans in doubt. The Nazi plane is shot down, but not before its debris slams into the American plane, trapping Jonathan, a young dreamer who hopes to return to the States and become a cartoonist for Disney, in the belly gunner position. Worse yet, the attack destroyed the plane’s landing gear. The Captain is capable of landing the plane on its belly, but Jonathan will almost certainly be killed. His comrades in arms pray, argue about whether to end his suffering early, and bid their farewells as the plane prepares for its fateful landing…but ultimately, Jonathan is left to draw his own conclusions as to how that landing will unfold.

Notes: Though the typical format of an Amazing Stories episode was a half-hour timeslot, NBC and showrunner Steven Spielberg agreed that he would direct at least one episode with an extended running time. Kevin Costner, Kiefer Sutherland and Jonathan Lapaglia all went on to greater fame after this episode. Amazing StoriesCasey Siemaszko had already been seen on the big screen (as Biff’s 3-D-glasses-wearing cohort in Back To The Future), and went on to recurring roles in NYPD Blue and Damages. Perhaps even more surprising than Steven Spielberg directing an hour of television at the height of his fame was that he got composer John Williams, one of his most frequent collaborators throughout his career, to score an hour of television. (Williams had already done the series’ theme music.) One of the orchestrators helping Williams arrange the score for this episode was Alexander Courage, better known for writing the theme tune from Star Trek. Spielberg was nominated for best director in the 1986 Emmy Awards for this episode, but lost to Georg Stanford Brown, director of the last episode of Cagney & Lacey’s fifth season. This episode’s cinematographer, John McPherson, did win an Emmy for the show’s lighting and camera work.

But Admiral Adama has weightier matters on his mind; Tigh and Starbuck have taken up residence in the rec room, telling anyone within earshot how much worse things were for the humans on New Caprica than they were for the members of the fleet who rescued them. Before long, a division appears among Galactica’s crew between those who were trapped on the planet and those who weren’t. 2000s Series Season 1 V

Pilot

V (2000s series)Life on Earth is brought to a standstill as enormous alien ships appear over most of the world’s major cities. Each ship reconfigures itself into a gigantic screen projecting an image of a seemingly human woman who introduces herself as Anna, the leader of these alien visitors. She promises peace and an exchange of technology with humanity – and all the visitors ask is access to Earth’s abundant water and a commonly occurring mineral. The visitors are welcomed with open arms, and they begin bringing the benefits of their advanced technology to Earth almost immediately, opening “healing centers” capable of repairing almost any damage or disease.

And yet there is suspicion about the motives of Anna’s people. A priest named Father Landry shocks his congregation by suggesting that the visitors need to earn humanity’s trust. Erica Evans, a counter-terrorism expert, is suspicious when the visitors take to the internet immediately with their own propaganda effort, though her son is less suspicious, finding the visitors’ women very attractive. Reporter Chad Peters earns Anna’s trust by asking the press corps to show her respect at a peace conference – enough trust that Anna personally selects him to conduct her first major prime time interview, though she makes it clear before the cameras roll that the interview will be conducted on her terms, with no questions permitted that would paint the visitors in a negative light.

A member of Father Landry’s congregation appears in the church, bleeding to death, and he hands Landry a package of photos and instructions to take them to a specific address at a specific time. Erica also winds up at that address, following a lead on an open terrorist investigation. Where they find themselves is at a meeting of an underground resistance, taking up arms to fight the visitors…and before Erica or Father Landry can ask why the visitors need to be fought, the visitors themselves appear and, to the few survivors of the resulting massacre, all becomes clear: the visitors have been among humanity for years already, and they do not come in peace.

Season 1 Regular Cast: Elizabeth Mitchell (Erica Evans), Morris Chestnut (Ryan Nichols), Joel Gretsch (Father Jack Landry), Logan Huffman (Tyler Evans), Lourdes Benedicto (Valerie Stevens), Laura Vandervoort (Lisa), Morena Baccarin (Anna), Scott Wolf (Chad Decker)

written by Scott Peters
story by Kenneth Johnson and Scott Peters, based on the miniseries by Kenneth Johnson
directed by Yves Simoneau
music by Normand Corbeil

Guest Cast: Christopher Shyer (Marcus), David Richmond-Peck (Georgie), Britt Irvin (Haley Stark), Scott Hylands (Father Travis)

Notes: Originally created by Kenneth Johnson as a non-sci-fi modern-day (well, 1980s) retelling of the rise of the Nazi Party, the original V miniseries resulted from NBC’s request for a sci-fi epic, retaining its cautionary tone but now with more futuristic action. In some ways, ABC’s revival of V steers things slightly closer to Johnson’s original intent. But Johnson himself was almost stripped of anything more than a “based upon” credit for the new series; the Writers’ Guild of America decided, in arbitration, that despite a wholesame revamp of the show’s cast of characters, Johnson should still be credited for creating the series, and should receive a story credit for the pilot (which seems to cover much of the original five-hour miniseries’ ground in the space of a single hour). The writers of the new series do not have to seek any further approval from Johnson for any storyline developments, however Johnson does retain the feature film rights to V. The location of the ill-fated resistance meeting, 4400 Pier Avenue, is a nod the cancelled cult SF series The 4400, whose cast and crew included actor Joel Gretsch, writer/producer Scott Peters and director Yves Simoneau.
