Season 09 SG-1 Stargate

Avalon – Part 1

Stargate SG-1The members of SG-1 have moved on to new assignments – Carter is now working at Stargate R&D full time. Teal’c has his hands full with the internal politics of the new Jaffa nation. Daniel Jackson is preparing to join the Daedalus on its trip to Atlantis. The SGC itself has a new leader, General Hank Landry. Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell arrives to join SG-1, eager to work with “the best of the best.” Critically injured leading the fighter squadron that protected SG-1 during Anubis’s assault in Antarctica, Mitchell was promised his choice of assignments by General O’Neill. But it falls to Landry to provide the details that O’Neill left out: Mitchell isn’t at SGC to join the existing team. He’s there to form and lead the new SG-1.

A disappointed Mitchell tries to convince the original team to reunite. Despite their gratitude and respect for Mitchell, he is unsuccessful – at least until Daniel’s old acquaintance Vala returns, claiming to have stolen a tablet that leads to an Ancient treasure. In order to ensure that she profits from the venture, Vala uses Goa’uld bracelets to link Daniel and her – neither can go very far from the other without falling ill. Having missed his trip on the Daedalus, Daniel turns his attention to the tablet. It suggests that the legend of Merlin and King Arthur has some link to the Ancients. The Prometheus‘ scanners find a large underground network of tunnels in England, hidden from Earth surveys by Ancient technology. Mitchell, Daniel, Vala and a visiting Teal’c ring into the complex and soon face a sword in a stone and a holographic message that their knowledge and character will be tested. And the consequence for failure is grave indeed.

Notes: Mitchell was injured in the seventh-season finale Lost City, Part 2; his flashbacks are a combination of excerpts from that episode and new footage. Jackson first encountered Vala in the eighth season episode Prometheus Unbound. Sam Carter’s reduced role in this episode is due to Amanda Tapping taking some time off after the birth of her daughter. Beginning with this episode, the opening title sequence was cut to a brief 10-second clip with the actor credits over the episode itself during Sci Fi’s broadcasts. The series’ producers prepared a full one-minute title sequence for syndication and other uses.

Season 2 Stargate Stargate Atlantis

The Siege Part III

Stargate AtlantisAs Sheppard is about to carry out a suicide mission against the nearest Wraith hive ship aboard a puddle jumper, another ship signals him and orders him to decloak – the Daedalus has arrived from Earth. And while that helps matters in orbit over Atlantis, there are still Wraith on the loose in Atlantis itself. Daedalus also bears a gift for Dr. McKay – a ZPM that will power Atlantis’ shields. Getting the module into place is enough of a challenge with Wraith warriors stalking the city, but when the last hive ship is destroyed in space, the remaining dart fighters mount a suicide strike on Atlantis. In the course of defending the city from the ground, Lt. Ford is captured by a Wraith, but before it can feed, a grenade blasts Ford and his attacker into the ocean below. When Ford is recovered, he has been subjected to an overdose of an enzyme injected into Wraith victims to prolong their lives for feeding, and when he awakens, he has Wraith-like strength, a temper to match, and – according to Dr. Beckett – a lifelong dependency on the enzyme. After the Wraith advance is beaten back, twelve more hive ships are detected. Sheppard’s strategy to intercept the hive ships ahead of their arrival works only briefly before the Daedalus is forced to fall back to Atlantis for repairs. McKay devises a plan to fool the Wraith into thinking that Atlantis has been destroyed, which could save everyone – unless Ford, unable to control himself, gives the game away.

Battlestar Galactica (New Series) Season 2

Scattered

Battlestar GalacticaMoments after Boomer shoots Commander Adama twice at point-blank range, a Cylon base star appears near Galactica. Left in command, Colonel Tigh orders the Colonial fleet to make an immediate jump to predetermined escape coordinates, even though the crew members on Kobol – including Baltar – will be trapped there, and the fleet’s senior doctor won’t be on board Galactica to treat Adama’s wounds. Worse yet, when Galactica arrives at those coordinates, it’s the only Colonial ship there. On Caprica, Starbuck is stunned by Helo’s devotion to the Cylon Boomer he says is pregnant with his child. Even when Boomer steals the Cylon ship Starbuck used to come to Caprica, Helo argues that she’s different from the other Cylons. On Kobol, injuries and lack of supplies take their toll, but the survivors of the crash discover that someone else is on the planet – deadly enemies who don’t fight like Cylons. And on Galactica, with President Roslin and Apollo both behind bars, Colonel Tigh insists that the ship is still under Adama’s command, and that “the Old Man”‘s way of doing things is still very much in effect. But Tigh may have to think outside that box if Galactica is to rejoin and protect the rest of the fleet.

Rex is mystified when one of his CIA superiors shows up unexpectedly in Wales to escort everyone back to Washington. On the flight back over the Atlantic, Jack falls deathly ill: someone else on the plane has poisoned him, and Rex quickly figures out that the hit has been carried out under orders, but probably not CIA orders. In Washington, Esther Drummond discovers that she and Rex have been set up, framed for something that they know nothing about, and tries to warn Rex that he can trust nobody once the plane lands on American soil. Notes: Wayne Knight unleashed forces he couldn’t control in Jurassic Park (1993), as well as uselessly unleashing Newman’s fury toward Jerry and gang throughout the series run of Seinfeld. Bari Hochwald is another Star Trek frequent flyer now appearching on Torchwood; she appeared as Dr. Bashir’s academic nemesis in Deep Space Nine, fell victim to a radioactive Federation space probe in one of Voyager’s final episodes, and appeared in an early, Klingon-centric episode of Enterprise. This episode’s mention that Oprah Winfrey is trying to land an interview with Oswald Danes would seem to either date Miracle Day prior to Oprah’s talk show going off the air in May 2011, or implies that Oprah’s show is still in production in whatever alternate timeline Torchwood takes place in. Miracle Day was already in production at around the time Winfrey announced her retirement from ongoing daytime TV.

The Final Phase

Doctor WhoTo save Romana and K-9, the Doctor gives in to the Dalek Supreme’s demand that he hand himself over… but naturally, this is part of the Doctor’s plan, and the Dalek saucer sent to collect him winds up under his complete control. Romana and K-9 get a glimpse of Cuthbert’s top-secret R&D project at last: a tear in the fabric of space-time, which Cuthbert has harnessed and turned into a dimensional gateway to explore (and, more likely, exploit) “the glories of the past.” Romana quickly realizes that this is the only reason why the Daleks are cooperating with Cuthbert: they intend to commandeer the gateway for their own purposes. The Daleks converge on Cuthbert’s space station to claim the gateway for themselves, forcing Cuthbert’s private army to join up with the Proximan rebels to fight off their common enemy. The Doctor arrives to make “adjustments” to Cuthbert’s dimensional gateway, over the corrupt businessman’s protests, but the choices on the table are wiping out the Dalek threat… or annihilation for the entire universe, Daleks and all.

Season 1 Stranger Things

The Vanishing Of Will Byers

Stranger ThingsNovember 6, 1983: An incident occurs at the Hawkins National Lab in Hawkins, Indiana. Something beyond the lab’s control escapes into the surrounding suburbs.

A marathon weekend session of Dungeons & Dragons breaks up, and Mike Wheeler has to give up being the Dungeon Master and return to school the following day. His friends Lucas, Dustin and Will all get on their bikes to head home, but the sight of a strange, towering humanoid figure sends Will off the road. He ditches his bike and races home on foot, only to find that both his older brother and his mother are still at work. Something beyond Will’s comprehension takes him.

Joyce Byers, Will’s mother, files a missing child report with the local police, though the initial response from Hawkins’ police chief is a bit underwhelming. Mike, Lucas and Dustin are all warned to stay home, rather than going to look for Will. Across town, a mysterious girl in a hospital gown is taken in by a restaurant owner, who pays for his kindness with his life when armed agents come looking for her. The girl manages to escape, and runs into Mike, Lucas and Dustin, who are doing precisely what they’ve been told not to do.

The Weirdo On Maple Street

Stranger ThingsMike, Lucas and Dustin gain the trust of the girl known only as Eleven, and Mike lets her stay at her house…even though he fails to mention this to his parents. He starts out sneaking food down to her, but then skips school to stay home and try to learn more about her. All he learns is that “bad men” took her – and when she points to Will Byers’ face in a school picture, Mike realizes that the same bad men may have taken Will.

Chief Hopper begins taking the search for Will more seriously, when he is called to the scene of another disturbing crime – the apparent suicide of the man who initially discovered Eleven. With the attention of the police shifted to that crime, the same agents who killed that man descend upon the Byers’ home, searching for signs of anything unusual – for example, what escaped from Franklin National Laboratory. They find the evidence they’re seeking.

No one can find any evidence of where Will Byers has gone. His older brother, Jonathan, pays his estranged father a visit, making sure that he hasn’t taken Will in (willingly or otherwise). And Joyce, Will’s mother, gets another garbled phone call, followed by an electrical event that convinces her Will is alive and trying to send her a call for help.

The Body

Stranger ThingsCertain that something tried to emerge from the wall of her home and attack her while she was communicating with her missing son, Joyce Byers is in disbelief when she is told that his body has been found. The town begins grieving for her, but Joyce refuses to believe that the body is Will’s, and is frustrated that no one believes her story about the attacker from the wall. Will’s friends also don’t believe that he’s dead, especially after Eleven demonstrates a way to hear him – but not respond to him – via radio. Nancy asks Jonathan Byers to develop new copies of the last photo he took of Nancy, only to see the faceless creature in the background: Joyce was right when she said she saw it come through her wall. Finally, Hopper’s suspicions lead him back to the morgue, to the body itself…only to find that Joyce was right about that too.
