Classic Season 07 Doctor Who

Inferno

Doctor WhoJoining the Brigadier’s team at a hazardous research site where Dr. Stahlman plans to drill through the Earth’s crust to tap its core as a new source of energy, the Doctor is annoyed when Stahlman rejects most of his expert scientific advice. But this isn’t enough to prevent to Doctor from availing himself of power from Stahlman’s nuclear reactor for his own experiments – yet another attempt to restore the TARDIS to full function. But during one such experiment, the TARDIS console shoots the Doctor sideways in time, depositing him in another dimension where Britain is a fascist state. In this alternate Earth, the Doctor can only watch in horror as Stahlman’s experiment progresses to the point where it destroys the world. The Doctor barely escapes, only to find that he may be too late from saving the Earth he knows from the same fate.

Emergence

Star Trek: The Next GenerationStardate 47869.2: While rehearsing a scene from “The Tempest” in the holodeck, Data and Picard are amazed when they are nearly run over by the Orient Express, the famed 19th century locomotive whose itinerary never once included Prospero’s island. Investigation of this quirk is postponed by the Enterprise’s sudden jump to warp speed, and a fortuitous exit from warp just in time to avoid the ship’s destruction. When the crew concentrates the search to this problem, a strange modification of the ship’s circuitry is discovered, one which seems to be tying many disparate systems together. When the ship’s systems take measures to protect the growing anomaly, the truth becomes clear – this is no accident, but a new intelligence all its own taking form within the Enterprise’s hull.

Homestead

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate 54868.6: A First Contact Day celebration – commemorating the anniversary of humanity’s first encounter with the Vulcans – is interrupted by an unexpected discovery. A colony of Talaxians has been detected living on a barren asteroid. Neelix is eager to visit them, as he may never get to see another of his own kind as Voyager speeds toward the Alpha Quadrant. But when the Talaxians greet the away team – including Neelix – with disdain for their weapons and “violent” way of life, the reunion doesn’t go as planned. Neelix discovers that the Talaxians have been mining the asteroid for aliens who are practically using them as slave labor – and who intend to dispose of the colony by destroying the asteroid. Neelix attempts to persuade his fellow Talaxians that this situation warrants abandoning their traditionally pacifist stance on conflict, and even helps them strike the first blow against their overseers. But this is merely the opening volley in what is likely to be an ongoing fight – and Neelix may have to leave Voyager in order to continue helping his people.

Auld Mortality

Doctor Who Unbound: Auld MortalityOn the planet Gallifrey, oblivious to the coming inauguration of the new President of the High Council, an author known only as the Doctor spends most of his days in an illegal Possibility Generator, researching and reliving events from the history of a primitive world called Earth, upon which his books are based. As his robotic drudge Badger tends to his needs, the Doctor stays in seclusion and fends off the recurring visits of his dreaded great-grand-uncle, Ordinal-General Quences, who has long harbored an ambition of maneuvering the Doctor into the presidency to gain prestige and influence for their family. Another member of the Doctor’s family, claiming to be his great granddaughter Susan, appears, and the Doctor learns that Susan is the new President-elect, and Quences hopes to follow her into a life of prestige. Having dreamt for years of stealing a TARDIS and fleeing Gallifrey with Susan under his wing, the Doctor finally rebels against Quences by overloading the Possibility Generator and flooding the Capitol with its alternate realities. Now, at last, perhaps the Doctor can escape his staid life – or perhaps he won’t. And perhaps Susan will come with him – or perhaps she won’t.

Lost Season 3

The Man Behind the Curtain

LostFlashback: A woman gives birth in the woods as her partner looks on. When the baby is finally born, the mother continues to bleed. Her partner, Roger, carries her and the baby to the highway and flags down a car for help, but before they can do anything she dies. Her last request is that Roger name the boy Benjamin.

Years later, Roger and Benjamin travel to the island to join the Dharma Initiative. Roger gets a job as a work man, but he is not happy about his work or the hazardous conditions that accompany Dharma’s conflict with the Hostiles. At some level, he also blames Ben for his partner’s death. Ben, meanwhile, has befriended a girl his own age named Annie – and he sees visions of his mother, telling him the time is not right for him to leave yet. When he can take it no longer, he sneaks out of his camp and beyond the sonic security fence – where he meets Richard Alpert, one of the Hostiles. Ben tells Richard his story, and Richard seems to believe it. So Ben says he wants to join Richard’s group – and Richard says that one day, he will have the opportunity. And when that day comes, Ben settles the conflict between Dharma and the Hostiles once and for all.

The Island: Sawyer brings the tape that Locke gave him back to Sayid, who quickly organizes the rest of the camp – except for Jack and Juliet – into a council. They are stunned to learn about Naomi and the news about Flight 815, and concerned about Juliet’s intentions. When Jack and Juliet return, Juliet tells Sawyer to play the other side of the tape – the ones with Ben’s instructions to wait for a raid on the camp. She has already told Jack about it, and Jack has a plan.

Locke arrives at the Others’ camp and demands answers. When Ben tells him about Jacob, Locke thinks he’s lying. He demands that Ben take him to Jacob, a demand he backs up by beating a returning Mikhail unconscious. Ben agrees; before they leave, Alex gives Locke a gun. They ultimately arrive at an old cottage, but when Ben brings Locke inside, all Locke sees is Ben talking to an empty chair. Locke considers this a sign of Ben’s insanity or dishonesty, but as he turns to go he hears a voice saying “Help me.” When Locke shines a flashlight in response, things start to fly across the room, but Locke still thinks it’s one of Ben’s tricks. On the way back to camp, Ben shows Locke the ditch where the members of the Dharma Initiative are laid to rest – and then shows Locke how seriously he takes both Jacob’s existence and Ben’s special relationship with him.

K-9 Season 1

Black Hunger

K-9Exploring some of the underground tunnels below Professor Gryffen’s lab, Darius spots two Department scientists experimenting with a piece of alien technology… and then unleashing something alive into the air. What Darius doesn’t see, however, is that the airborne life form quickly consumes anything near it – anything alive or dead, including one of the scientists. As far as Darius knows, the scientists simply abandon their experiment and leave their equipment there, which he then gathers up and takes to Gryffen’s lab. Darius discovers the purpose behind the alien life form: it consumes anything, and can then be retrieved by the device – the perfect miracle cleaning solution, except that it’s capable of devouring human life as well.

written by Chris Roache
directed by James Bogle
music by Christopher Elves

Guest Cast: Robyn Moore (Inspector June Turner), Connor Van Vuuren (Drake), Jared Robinsen (Thorne), Scott Tilly (Worker #1), Anthony Kidd (Worker #2), Stephen Sourkis (Dept. Technician), Josh Norsend (CCPC), Jason McNamara (CCPC), Dane Paltman (CCPC)

Notes: There’s a fairly interesting piece of rather major character development in this episode, as Inspector June Turner admits that Jorjie’s involvement with K-9’s adventures does represent a conflict of interests for her work with the Department, but she also says that she stays with the Department to keep the likes of Drake from winding up in charge. There’s also a major Doctor Who reference here, as K-9 says he’ll evacuate his fuel cells when he next visits the planet Atrios, which has “no carbon-based life forms” – presumably the Atrios-Zeos war didn’t come to a conclusion that favored the survival of any life there.

Audio Dramas Big Finish Blake's 7

Cold Fury

Blake's 7Accidentally left behind by the Liberator crew after narrowly escaping the trap laid for them using Fedorac as a lure, Vila is now Travis’ prisoner. Though he proves surprisingly resilient to Travis’ methods of persuading him to talk, and despite one escape attempt during which he’s able to send a distress signal, even Vila has limits to his endurance.

Zen detects Vila’s distress signal and traces its point of origin to an underground Federation facilitiy on an inhospitable ice planet, but en route, it is also discovered that the President of the Federation may be there as well, making an unannounced visit to that same top-secret facility. Blake becomes obsessed with what he perceives as an opportunity to behead the Federation’s power structure, and to the alarm of Jenna and the rest of his crew, seems to regard rescuing Vila as a minor mission objective.

Which is exactly what the President and Travis are counting on.

Cast: Gareth Thomas (Blake), Paul Darrow (Avon), Michael Keating (Vila), Jan Chappell (Cally), Sally Knyvette (Jenna), Brian Croucher (Travis), Hugh Fraser (President), Anthony Howell (Gustav Nyrron), Caroline Langrishe (Dr. Tirus), Alistair Lock (Zen/Orac)

Notes: Travis reminds Vila of the events on the planet Exbar, from the television episode Hostage, a surprising callback since Hostage is, perhaps, not the best-regarded episode of the TV series. The President says that the Federation’s (frequently unsuccessful) cloning experiments are taking place without the knowledge or help of the Clone Masters (seen only once in Weapon). Gustav Nyrron was introduced in the Liberator Chronicles audiobook Wolf, while the scientist overseeing the cloning experiments is from Auron (Children Of Auron), where such technology is in frequent use, though one gets the impression she has knowledge of only part of that process.
