The Omega Glory

Star Trek ClassicStardate not given: The missing starship Exeter is spotted in orbit of an inhabited planet. Kirk, Spock and McCoy board the Exeter, finding only the remains of the crew, wiped out by a disease which likely affects the boarding party now. Transporting to the planet, Kirk finds that Captain Tracey of the Exeter escaped his crew’s fate, and the atmosphere on the planet is capable of eliminating the disease from the Enterprise landing party’s bloodstreams. But more problems arise as Tracey discards his loyalty to the prime directive in an attempt to gain power in the planet’s government.

But a massive earthquake shakes the island before the OSI delegation even leaves the ground in the U.S., trapping Vasily’s research partner (who also happens to be his fiance) underground. Steve insists on going to Kamkov Island despite the danger, but when another quake strikes, he saves Zhukov by using his bionic strength, revealing his secret in the process. Other secrets are revealed as well: to prevent western sabotage, an automatic defense system was rigged to detonate a nuclear bomb at the heart of Zhukov’s project. Enlightenment

Doctor WhoThe Doctor receives a very vague warning of danger from the White Guardian, but Turlough’s interference – passed off as worrying that the TARDIS console would be damaged by the White Guardian’s energy requirements – leaves the Doctor with only a shred of the information he needs. The TARDIS arrives on a vintage sailing ship, whose crew is not at all perturbed by the Doctor’s arrival, and whose officers are beings who live outside of time itself. The Doctor discovers that he is now taking part in a yacht race through the blackness of space, and the Eternals care nothing for the human sailors they’ve abducted. At the finish line lies the promise of everlasting enlightenment – or, if Turlough continues to fall under the sway of the Black Guardian, death for the Doctor.

He discovers, through her and a young Klingon boy named Toq, that the children of the colony know little or nothing of either race’s heritage. Dark Forces Star Wars

Soldier For The Empire – Part I

Star Wars: Dark ForcesOn Sullun, one of the moons of Sullust, a Rebel uprising is violently put down by Captain Thrawn’s Imperial platoons. But Thrawn’s superior, a dark Jedi named Lord Jerec, has a mission of a more personal nature as he searches for a Rebel named Morgan Katarn. Katarn’s latent ability with the Force – and his steadfast refusal to use it for fear of misusing the power – has earned him the label of a coward in Jerec’s eyes, and when Katarn refuses to give up any information about the Rebellion, Jerec murders him in cold blood.

Ironically, Morgan Katarn’s son Kyle is enrolled in the Imperial Academy, on the fast track through officer training. But Kyle’s disastrous cadet leader mission reveals two things which could be his downfall in the Empire: he too has a latent ability to use the Force, and his distaste for meaningless killing has no place in the take-no-prisoners war the Empire is waging against the Rebels. Despite the high rate of casualties among Kyle’s own Imperial platoon, he’s decorated as a war hero for seizing a Rebel communications outpost and graduates from the Academy with honors – just before his commandant informs him of his father’s death, supposedly at the hands of Rebels. Kyle books a cruise in what little leave time he has between his graduation and reporting for duty, and on the cruise ship he spots a woman who he remembers as being among the Rebels from the outpost against which he led the assault. He’s eager to speak to her again, but he’s caught off guard when he discovers that she’s just as eager to speak to him – and to reveal the true nature of his father’s fate.

Notes: Recorded at Tom Voegli Productions (run by the producer of the original NPR Star Wars radio dramas), the Dark Empire audiobooks are full-cast adaptations – in a similar style to the radio dramas – of a series of novellas based on the popular first-person shooter video game Star Wars: Dark Forces. The game’s popularity was such that it even added a few action figures to the Star Wars toy line. The adaptation scripts were written by John Whitman, who generated “additional material” added onto the late Brian Daley’s scripts for the Return Of The Jedi radio series. Narrator Ken Hiller is the only voice common to the cast of the original NPR radio dramas and the Dark Forces audio plays.

Soldier For The Empire – Part II

Star Wars: Dark ForcesAfter learning what happened to his father, Kyle Katarn tells Jan Ors, the Rebel woman who he allowed to escape from the communications outpost, that he has changed his mind about service to the Empire. But before he can put any more thought into his defection than that, he discovers that he’s being watched – and so is Jan. Kyle throws his lot in with the Rebels as they make a hasty escape from the cruise ship, and winds up on the Empire’s most wanted list soon afterward. Jan takes him to meet Mon Mothma, a Rebel leader who assigns him to what may very well be a suicide mission – Kyle is to infiltrate an Imperial research facility and steal the plans to the Empire’s next doomsday weapon, a mobile space station called the Death Star. Mon Mothma also assigns Jan Ors to back Kyle up – or, if she sees anything that gives her even the slightest suspicion of betrayal, to kill him.

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate not given: Voyager receives a signal from an alien claiming to be the late Ensign Lyndsay Ballard, a junior engineering crewmember who escaped the notice of Captain Janeway until she died tragically three years ago. Ensign Ballard did not, however, go ignored by Harry Kim, who attended Starfleet Academy with her and kept his crush on her secret until she died. Every means of verification proves that she is who she says she is, though she is not and will never be human – she has been transmuted into a member of the Kobali race, which reproduces by reanimating the dead of other species and implanting them with new personalities. Very rarely, a revived person will regain memories of his or her previous life, as in Lyndsay’s case. Maternity Leave

LostFlashback: Inside another Dharma bunker, Ethan claims to be giving Claire medicine for her baby. He tells her that the baby may get sick, and encourages her to give the baby to his group so they can keep the baby safe. Confused by the drugs in her system, Claire is inclined to agree, even though other members of Ethan’s group are upset that their timetable has been altered. Finally, a teenage girl tries to get Claire to leave, saying that the group plans to kill her. The girl knocks Claire out and leaves her in the jungle, where Rousseau finds her. To keep the Others from finding Claire, Rousseau knocks her out.

The Island: Jack and Locke continue to argue about what to do with Henry. When Eko realizes they are keeping a prisoner in the hatch, he asks Jack to speak to Henry. Eko recounts how he killed two of the Others who tried to take him, and asks Henry for forgiveness. Henry tries to drive a wedge further between Jack and Locke.

Aaron develops a rash and fever. Jack says it’s just a simple childhood disease that will pass, but Claire is unsure, especially since her memories of her time with Ethan are starting to resurface. She asks Libby to help her remember, and then sets out with Kate to find Rousseau and then the Dharma bunker, looking for the vaccine that will protect Aaron. Rousseau agrees to help, in hopes that this will help her track down Alex, but Rousseau warns Claire of what must be done if Aaron is infected. The warning is even more chilling when they find the bunker deserted with only a few effects left behind . . . including evidence that the Others have not been what they seemed.

Are You A Spider, Matt?

Avenue 5Marveling at the ever-present cloud of colorfully-ornamented human waste, Frank Kelly is certain he sees some of the waste configure itself briefly into the face of Pope John Paul II, and he even manages to convince others that they can see it too. Clark and Judd are a little bit uneasy with the notion that the passengers have declared that a miracle has taken place, but for the moment it seems to bring peace to the unruly crowd…with the exception of rich, litigious passenger Harrison Ames, whose threats to sue Judd over the trip’s nonstop problems have become the bane of Judd’s existence. Even a free round of VR golf does little to put Ames in a better mood. Judd’s solution: Clark should invite Ames to dine at the captain’s table, charming him into not suing. But just before dinner, Clark himself is server with divorce papers from Earth, robbing him of his usual charm. On Earth, Rav Mulcair finds herself on the receiving end of a very public backlash, and makes plans to sneak aboard a resupply shuttle leaving soon to rendezvous with Avenue 5, while at the same time, Billie talks Clark into an improvised plan to shed weight and push the ship forward, shaving significant time off the return journey.

Chapter 17: The Apostate

Star Wars: The MandalorianWhen a Mandalorian initiation rite is interrupted by an enormous, omnivorous creature, even an entire legion of armed Mandalorians is unable to bring it down. The arrival of another one of their number – and a well-timed shot from his ship – ends the danger. Afterward, the Mandalorian informs the Armorer of his plan to redeem himself in the waters of the mines of Mandalore, though she exhibits little optimism that he can actually achieve this. A visit to the revitalized planet Nevarro reunites the Mandalorian with Greef Karga, but when they try to revive IG-11, they discover it has reverted to its original bounty hunter programming and poses a danger to Grogu. The Mandalorian next tries to enlist the help of Bo-Katan, but she rules an empty palace, her followers having abandoned her cause when she did not return with the darksaber. She does, at least, offer a clue as to where the Mandalorian can achieve his goal… with a warning that Mandalore itself has been poisoned.

The Mandalorianwritten by Jon Favreau

Cast: Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian), Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), Emily Swallow (The Armorer), Carl Weathers (High Magistrate Greef Karga), Brendan Wayne (Mandalorian Warrior), Lateef Crowder (Mandalorian Warrior), Tait Fletcher (Paz Vizsla), Wesley Kimmel (Ragnar), Parvesh Cheena (Nevarro Copper Droid voice), Taiki Waititi (IG-11 voice), Marti Matulis (Vane), Shirley Henderson (Anzellan Crew voices), Nonso Anozie (Gorian Shard), Mat Fraser (Pirate Coxswain), Chris Bartlett (Nevarro Copper Droid performance artist), Carey Jones (Gorian Shard performance artist), Misty Rosas (Pirate Coxswain performance artist), Ian Goodwin (Warthog Pirate performance artist), Barry Lowin (Klatoonian Pirate Pilot performance artist), David St. Pierre (Trandoshan Pirate Pilot performance artist), Kelly Cruz (Mandalorian Drummer), Joey Gandolfo (Mandalorian Drummer), Andrew Lederman (Mandalorian Drummer), Joe Martone (Mandalorian Drummer), Daniel Mills (Mandalorian Drummer), Robert Murray (Mandalorian Drummer), Lyndon Rochelle (Mandalorian Drummer), Gregory Sadler (Mandalorian Drummer), Ian Wurfl (Mandalorian Drummer)

The MandalorianNotes: It’s a really good idea to have watched The Book Of Boba Fett prior to this season of The Mandalorian, specifically episodes 5 through 7, as this is where the reunion between the Mandalorian and Grogu takes place (as well as the Mandalorian’s admission to the Armorer that he has removed his helmet, her suggestion of how he might redeem himself, and the acquisition of a new ship to replace the Razor Crest). We’ve met Anzellan droidsmith Babu Frik already in The Rise Of Skywalker (2019), although that movie happens many years later than The Mandalorian.
