Doctor Who And The Kitchen Sink

Just for fun (and to mess around with the luma key functions), this is an unofficial Doctor Who title sequence with elements from every different sequence that has appeared in the series thus far, from Hartnell through to Eccleston/Tennant. In case anyone’s wondering:

Hartnell – the logo and the Rorshach-test-like blob from which it emerges
Troughton – the little B&W blippy bits at the side, and vague shapes moving past at the top and bottom
Pertwee – red diamond-shaped….thingies
Tom Baker – the round tunnel is there, very faintly, but the Flash compression pretty much knocks it out here
Davison – starfield
Colin Baker – starfield moving in reverse at the beginning
McCoy – the rotating TARDIS-in-a-bubble at the beginning
McGann – the blue clouds with vaguely asteroid-shaped holes shooting past
Eccleston/Tennant – red clouds & green/gold rings

The “explosion” at the beginning is also from the McGann movie; that was actually the Master exploding! The Pertwee “diamonds” were the element I screwed with the most; they were previously static, though here I sort of strongarmed them into becoming a moving “tunnel” element that very slowly moves past. That took a bit of render time…

Doctor Who and the Video Rendering of Doom

Luma keying is different from chromakeying; chromakeying, as the name implies, “keys” out a specific color – usually blue or green – and replaces it with something else. Luma keying keys out areas of user-specified brightness or darkness – in a way, it’s almost on a level with 50s/early 60s special effects, except that doing it in the digital realm means you can retain some softness to the edges of whatever area you’re allowing to be “seen through.” It’s still kinda clumsy.

Cue up some music and give it a try (the “Delware Version” of the theme matches up disturbingly well). It’s fun (and maybe just a little bit of a godawful mess)! Feel free to spew forth comments and/or questions here.
