Dancin’ with Delia and other random thoughts

You know, anymore, it seems like 50% of everything I blog about has something to do with Doctor Who. I really don’t try to do that deliberately, but it just kinda happens. I’m on a Who high at the moment – even rewatched Turn Left on Sci-Fi tonight. I’ve been kinda bummed lately, so I guess I’m clinging tenaciously to whatever has most recently brought a smile to my face. *shrug*

That also means clinging tenaciously to a certain baby. He’s now cruising around the house under his own power, delighting in his mobility, practicing standing up at every possible opportunity, and finding new and exciting objects that he really shouldn’t even think about putting in his mouth, and yet manages to at least think about doing it anyway. He loves chasing Oberon. Poor Obi woke up today, having slept most of the day away in Evan’s bouncy chair, to find Evan standing over him. You could see the fear: oh my God, he’s going to be able to chase me around now. 😆 Today I read him “Sammy, The White House Mouse,” a book that was given to me when I was an extremely young’un – it still has my nameplate sticker in the front of the book. I hadn’t read it in…well…let’s say 30+ years. I’m glad I still have so many of those old books of mine hanging around. (I’m loathe to do away with a book that isn’t a duplicate.) … Read more

Death to plastic twisties!

In case the Screaming Angel in the previous post didn’t tip anybody off, I actually opened a few action figures that have been piled up in a corner of my room tonight. Much like I’m the antithesis of a game collector who has to have all of his Atari cartridges in the box and in the shrinkwrap (never mind the fact that the shrinkwrap will eventually damage the box), I’m the antithesis of the toy collector: I open the bloody things and put them on a shelf. I just don’t have the room to keep the original packaging around anymore, except in very special cases or the very, very small handful of dupes I own. So out they come.

The odd mention of a stack of still-packaged figures in the corner, however, is a particular quirk of mine: I keep a few of my latest acquisitions in their packaging for a rainy day. As silly as it sounds for someone who’s a couple of weeks away from being 36, one of the greatest joys of my childhood, and still a guilty pleasure now, was cracking little Star Wars guys off of the card and out of the bubble. I’ve found that having a couple of these around, waiting to be opened, is a nice tonic for my soul when I’ve been down in the dumps.

But man, have things changed since Star Wars was in the theaters. There’s no more “just tear the bubble off the backing” anymore. Now the bubble has two components: the front (the outside) and the back, which is molded to hold that specific figure plus whatever goodies come with it. And these days, more often than not, it takes either a machete or an act of Congress to get the figure out of the package. Or every member of Congress wielding a machete. All the better to cut all those flippin’ plastic twisties with, my dear.

It’s my understanding that these are seen as an anti-shoplifting measure – as easy as it was in the old days to break a new figure out of the bubble at home, it was also that easy to do it in the store, leave the card and the empty bubble on the peg, and slip the figure into one’s pocket. Obviously, that’s less likely to happen with 6+ plastic twisties restraining the figure like it’s a wild animal on an operating table. But it annoys me to no end when I’ve bought the thing and I can’t even set it free. Makes me want to suggest something more along the lines of buying a CD – put it in a case that has to be unlocked at the register or something. C’mon, guys. You’re stealing my moment of joy.… Read more

If anyone out there is going to San Diego Comic Con in July…

Time Crash action figure set…you think you could do me a solid? Character Options is doing a SDCC exclusive Doctor Who “Time Crash” action figure set, featuring what they claim will be the only version of the fifth Doctor sporting celery on his collar. There will only be 3,000 of these two-packs at the event, and proceeds will go to the Children In Need charity, which is kind of appropriate since that’s what “Time Crash” was done for in the first place. If anyone reading this (who I know and trust, that is – people who I don’t know and trust probably couldn’t find anything interesting to read about here anyway) is going, I can paypal you in advance for the figures and of course for shipping ’em to me once you get home. Assuming you don’t get terribly attached to them in between. Which, actually, I could see happening, because how awesome is plastic Davison + his plastic celery?

Now, a bit of funny commentary about this set: the irony of doing a “Time Crash” set in the U.S. is off the scale, because, of course, you haven’t seen “Time Crash” in the U.S. unless you downloaded it. If you want to see some pissed-off Brits, hit up any Who forum and look for the thread about these figures. The British collectors are – quite rightly, in my estimation – furious over this, because while they’re likely to have been the people who donated money during the telethon-style broadcast of which “Time Crash” was one small part, we’re the ones getting the figures. The UK collectors were already up in arms about the wide-release fifth Doctor sporting no celery, so they view this as a slap in the face. Now, the money all going to charity = a good thing, but it seems like someone’s marketing logic is a little askew here. So, my thanks to Character Options for announcing something which has cheered me up a little bit after a craptabulous week, and…I guess…thanks for rewarding us Yanks for…technically speaking…illegally downloading…that little Doctor Who special?

If CO can get permission to legally show TC at the con, that might make marginally more sense. But still, the basic assumption in place is that the target audience has got hold of the thing somehow, by hook or by crook, and knows why the tenth and fifth Doctors would be packaged together. *shrug*

So yeah, if anyone I know is headed for SDCC, hit me up here.

(Sorry if this seems like an awfully trivial thing after all the Othello angst – you can almost hear the mental gears being stripped. If you were to accuse me of trying as hard as I possibly can to find anything to distract myself and snap out of it…well, you’re dangerously close to being right on the money.)… Read more

Torchwood action figures

I’d been saying since the beginning of the year that, since Character Options didn’t get the Torchwood license, whoever did would win me or lose me based on the action figure of Gwen. Looks like they win.
Torchwood action figures
That’ll do nicely until I can have a full-sized Gwen sitting on my desk.

The first wave is Jack, Gwen, a Weevil and the Cyberwoman, and yes, they are scaled the same as the CO Doctor Who figures; the part that bites is that you have to order the entire first wave. I don’t need a Weevil or Lisa to make my life (or my increasingly British toy shelf) complete, but I don’t get a choice in the matter. All I can say is that the other three main characters better be in wave two so I can tie off this collection; I’ve heard rumors that wave two will indeed be Ianto, Owen and Tosh, with Captain John, so that would suit me just fine.

You can get ’em here. On a completely unrelated note, I’m going to have some Who figures for sale at OVGE, so make sure your wallet’s bigger on the inside than on the outside!… Read more

Doctor Who classic Doctor figures: ZOMG!

Doctor WhoYou know, when I knew I had a kid on the way, I vowed to myself that, unless Character Options started doing classic Doctors from Doctor Who, my sci-fi toy collecting days were over and done with. Then they announced ’em – go figure. But I wasn’t expecting them to look this good – this is a quick ‘n’ dirty composite I whipped up from the pics first published at this site. (It’s worth the click – they also have pics of the Zygon, Sea Devil, Robots of Death, the K-1 Giant Robot…)

I’ve been wanting DW merchandise that looks this good since these gentlemen were still all over the airwaves. I can’t wait to see the other five. I also can’t wait for hell to freeze over and Amazon UK ship toys outside of the UK. 😆 Needless to say, I may be saving up a few bucks and begging Mayhem for a Big Favor Real Soon.

Just a reminder – Father’s Day and my birthday are both coming up in the next few months. Just consider the above pictured plastic Time Lords added to my wish list. 😉… Read more

O:\TANNENBAUM\ – making the tree

Merry Christmas from theLogBook.comThe annual “Christmas tree” is getting to be something of a tradition at theLogBook; basically, it’s a “best of” collection of that year’s Toybox toy reviews and pictorials, all gathered under the tree. As they should be. It’s a very crudely programmed graphical menu that doesn’t really give you any explicit instructions – what you click on is (God and HTML willing) what you’ll see.

In 2006, I assembled the tree and its attendant presents in Paint Shop Pro, as much out of laziness as anything. But this year, I decided to take a different route – I had all of the stuff readily at hand, and one morning I had a little bit of time, so I physically assembled all of this year’s Toybox items – most of them in their original boxes no less! – in one place and took a photo. Compared to last year’s – and a work-in-progress version for this year which was wiped out in a power bump – that’s almost cheating. But I thought it’d be a real statement of geeky cool to actually have all that stuff in one place at one time.

One cheat I’ll admit to: the Voyager and other space probe models were simply too small and spindly to be seen, so I propped up the relevant patches for their missions instead. Also lost in the shuffle may be VINCENT from The Black Hole. See if you can find him – he’s there for a reason. Also a bit sneaky is the dark red gift at the lower right corner – with a Starfleet combadge on it. This is there to visualize something for which there wasn’t a physical package…well, unless I went and found an old 3/4″ broadcast videotape from the ’80s somewhere. This was a bit easier. 😆

If anything was wrong with my first draft of this year’s tree, it was that there was simply not enough going on among the tree’s ornaments themselves. Last year’s tree had a couple of things snuck in among the ornaments, so literally two days out, I added a couple of extra goodies – namely, the baby and Jet Jaguar (!). If these look like cheesily-pasted-on late additions…that’s because they were!

Anyway, hopefully everyone enjoyed this year’s tree. Now that I’ve got a kid who, in theory, should be taking up almost all of the household toy-buying budget instead of his dad, I’m not sure how the tree idea will play out in the future. But then again…I’ve still got a few trinkets here and there that I’ve been holding back on.… Read more

The tree

For years and years, if my wife and I put up a Christmas tree at all, it was a tiny little tabletop tree, and the cats would promptly savage it. Most years…honestly…we didnt put one up at all. Family didn’t come to our place for Christmas, we went to theirs. But this year is a little bit different. This year we have a child of our own. He’s already fascinated by the big tree by the front window, with all of its white lights – we’re still on an incredibly meager budget, so this is one of the $30 pre-lit, all-but-pre-assembled specials one finds at Wal-Mart. For the first time, we finally had something to do with the considerable collection of Christmas ornaments we’ve been given as gifts over the years. And for the first time since I’d been collecting them in the early 90s, I finally had a launching pad for my fleet of Star Trek ornaments. … Read more

Video production, diaper changes, weddings, parties, anything

We’re diverse around here like that. I have a humorous gadget story to tell, on the day after the latest Mid South Gaming Get Together up at Brian’s (icbrkr) place. On the occasion of the first such get-together, in December 2004, Flack festooned us both with copious garage sale and thrift store finds. One of the goodies he gave me was this Radio Shack sound FX generator, complete in the box with instructions, AC adapter and everything. In fact…let me check the ol’ server…yep, here’s the original picture I took at the time:

Sound FX generator

I distinctly remember him saying that he had snagged this for a buck at a yard sale, had no use for it, and so here it was, mine for the taking. The really funny thing about it? This bought-for-a-buck-at-a-yard-sale piece of electronic fun, given to me for nothing, is now a vital cog in the video production wheel around here:
