Hooked on Oberonics

Evan and Oberon chillin'One note that I forgot to add from last night: I had to go somewhere around 8:30 or so, and right on cue, Oberon shot out the door. Again. I followed him as far as I could. Again. (Wearing shorts and sandals this time.) And he got away from me. Again.

I decided to go ahead and do what I needed to go do and just come home, at which point I’d keep an eye out for him. By the time I got home, he had already wandered back to the house and had been let in. Which, you know, is good, but if he thinks we’re just going to concede the point and let him be an indoor/outdoor cat – in an outdoor area where we recently had a dead cat turn up in our yard (thanks, Xena – no, she didn’t kill it herself, but she dragged it into the yard from wherever she found it) – he really needs to readjust the thinking in that one little fuzzy brain cell of his. In the meantime, though, I’m happy to see him more enthusiastically making his way home after getting out. He wouldn’t have wanted to be in that storm last night.

So here’s a picture of Evan and his strangely adventurous cat yet again, taken this morning after yet another adventure into the wild. But at lest Obi’s kinda like me – he knows there’s only one place he can go to see that little face, so he keeps coming back.

Looks like Atlanta got hammered worse than anybody realized at first, so again, if any of my regular readers in Atlanta or any of the other storm-tossed areas of Georgia/SC can check in, let us know if you’re OK. If I don’t hear from you soon, I’m sending Obi out as the search party. And then you’re really in trouble.… Read more

Delicious cheese and fine whines

The weather tonight is totally bizarre – we’re under a tornado watch now, with plenty of bad stuff headed this way, and we’re under a winter storm watch at the same time, because after the storms blast through and rip off everyone’s roof, the temperature’s going to drop like a rock and it’ll start snowing. If there’s ever a time I’m glad to not still be working in TV, this is it – this is kind of like the Perfect Storm for broadcast purposes: a 24-48 hour period where directors, weather talent, camera crew, etc. will be stuck at the station. I can think of much better ways to spend my Sunday night, thanks, like holding Evan’s hand until he falls asleep. It’s good to be daddy. And speaking of that… … Read more

And the winner is…

Jar Jar BinksThe winner of the Really Bad Visual Pun post yesterday is…well, there are two winners, since I posted it here and on MySpace. The blawg winner was Ubik, while the MySpace winner was Kati (as I said in the comments over there, dudes, you guys just got beat by a girl on a Star Wars gag. C’mon!). The answer, of course, was “Jar Jar Binks”. (Actually, even that’s a bit of a cheat – there’s only one jar of binks, but I just turned it around 180 degrees, moved it over a bit, and glued the two photos together.) Stay tuned for even more cheesy-ass puns constructed out of ordinary household items. (Or, as Ubik pointed out, cheesy items in my household. Not everyone’s got a jar o’ binkies sitting around. But they should.)

There’s been much speculation in the comments sections that the result of Obi’s odyssey will be a crop of mini-Obis running around in mere months. If that happens, I’ve got a pretty steep vet bill from about a year ago to dispute, ’cause somethin’ obviously didn’t work. 😆 I’m just glad the big furry doofus is back among us. He’s seemed kinda subdued and maybe even a bit sad since he got home, though part of that may be that since he rejoined the general cat populace, Olivia and Othello spent 24 hours (at least) hissing at him because he came home smelling kinda funky. Olivia has stopped growling at him and plays with him again, but Othello is still giving Obi the cold shoulder. The real litmus test was when Obi jumped on the changing table while I was putting a new diaper on Evan. Evan has been rolling up on his sides, almost to the point of rolling over on his belly, pretty regularly, so Obi was a little surprised when Evan rolled up on one side and grabbed his cat. I think that’s the welcome home he was expecting. Not even the smell of a visit from Captain Pooty Pants can keep Obi away from his person. (Captain Pooty Pants raises such a stink these days that I think he’s angling for a promotion to Rear Admiral…)

The thought occurs, having very recently spent a lot of time out in my horrendously overgrown pasture looking for the great grey hunter, and coming back to the house with thorns and stickers stuck to me and LOST a lot of weight - get it? Ha! It's funny!through me, that something needs to be done with the pasture. Tactical nukes spring immediately to mind, but maybe just bulldozing the damn thing might be more realistic – pave the whole thing over, turn it into a giant solar panel, with big windmills at one end and a couple of greenhouses for growing food. What a sight that would be. But as ridiculous as it sounds, it’d be a damn sight better than the Absolutely Nothing that we’re doing with 3+ acres right now. It’s such a jungle out there that I half expect the Smoke Monster to pop out from behind the barn or something. Hey, there’s an idea. I could cut those guys such a better deal than Hawaii could.… Read more

Obi update

Nothing yet. I went outside last night on the hour, every hour until midnight, despite a wicked windstorm that’s been going on for about 24 hours, and called to Obi; no luck yet. Couldn’t find him by daylight either. I may post some signs around the area today, but I’m beginning to lose hope. The heavy wind is continuing, and it’s going to get seriously cold tonight. With no way to defend himself, I give him maybe 24 more hours out there. I’m beginning to hope that he’s charmed his way into someone else’s home, even if that means he never comes back to us.… Read more

Oberon, come home!

Well, the little doofus has gone and done it this time. Tonight when I opened the back door to feed Xena, Oberon flew out the door like he’d been shot out of the kitten cannon. He headed straight for the pasture and disappeared into some very thick underbrush (after gleefully scattering a nest of rabbits with me chasing after him). I literally couldn’t get any further to follow him – about halfway down my pasture land, the brush turns into dead sticker bushes taller than I am. I couldn’t even see him anymore.

I’ve been outside calling for him, I’ve turned on all the porch & deck lights, and I’ve gone out to look for him again, but it may just be the Oberon has decided to leave us for good this time. It breaks my heart, but if it has to happen, better that it happens now when Obi’s person is five months old instead of five years old and just completely breaking the kid’s heart into little pieces. I’m just worried about the cat on general principle – we’ve gotten him his shots, fairly recently too, but he’s declawed on the front and he’s just…so…stupid. I hope he survives the night if he doesn’t come back soon.

Oberon outside

Olivia is moping at the back door, looking out for him, and not budging an inch. You want to know whose heart is really broken? That’d be hers.

Come home soon, you big furry moron. I miss you. We’ve gotta have a talk about open doors. 🙁 … Read more

One (if not more) of those weeks

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. (It’s not entirely my fault – it kinda helps for the site to be up so I can update it. Apparently theLogBook’s web hosting service has had a hell of a week too.) It’s been a bit of a rough week, the kind that you just don’t expect to have when “all” you have to do is hang out with an infant most of the time. Hopefully, there’s light at the end of the tunnel – and hopefully it’s not a UFO waiting to probe me or something. I hate that.

I’ll have a full review soonish, but I’ve been listening to Frank Klepacki’s Universe At War game soundtrack a lot lately, and it’s a winner. The end titles alone are just epic. This guy needs a movie to score – the kind with lots of explosions (and probably mecha) – stat. I’ve also been listening to an inordinate amount of ELO lately – just musical comfort food. “All Over The World” is kinda like the best song ever right now.

Anyway, I’ll hush up about all that for the moment. If you guys wanted real emo, you’d be watching UHF. But what you really want…are baby and kitty pics. Admit it. … Read more

Downtime

Before anyone asks, I don’t know why my site’s been down so much for the past week either. I’ve put a query in to my web hosting service, but they seem more interested in trying to convince you that your customer service requests are being answered by some hottie wearing a humongous 1990s-style hands-free headset than in making it easy to figure out how to send them a query. Hooray for cheap stock photography! Hopefully the issue will resolve itself soon.

Because I know you people have been missing out on the baby-and-kitty pics, so I now present: Once Upon An Obi! … Read more

Fur family photos

So I noticed last night, while hanging out in Little E’s room, that there was a fortuitous planetary alignment…except with cats, not planets. Which is good, because I’m not sure how many planets I could comfortably fit on the bed.

Othello, Olivia and Oberon

I had to brighten that picture considerably, at the cost of some detail on Oberon. I tried taking other photos with all three there, but it didn’t quite work… … Read more
