Anymore, if we have a really bad storm coming in, I’ll designate one of my video cameras as the “death cam” and point it out a window to catch the inbound nastiness. Here are some of the highlight(ning)s from Wednesday night’s death cam tape. All views are facing north.
The trick here is to grab the frame of video that’s immediately before or after the brightest point of any given lightning strike. Too bright, and it just looks like a daytime shot (see below). This is useful for getting a look at the cloud features…
…which looked pretty grim here.

This shot is actually during the peak brightness of one lightning strike: so much rain was coming down so hard that you can’t see very far.
Note that everything, including the streetlights, has lost power now. (Obviously the camera’s on battery power.)
