The Expanse: Dulcinea
The first episode of the science fiction series The Expanse, based on the series of novels by James S.A. Corey (a pseudonym for writers Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham), premieres on cable channel Syfy.
Blue Origin NS-2
Commercial spaceflight operator Blue Origin, owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, launches its second New Shepard flight. The uncrewed (but human-rated) capsule and its single-stage suborbital booster come in for soft landings near Blue Origin’s Texas launch facility, after refinements are made to the system of aerodynamic fins designed to keep the booster upright as it returns to the ground for a survivable landing. This is the first intact return of a space-flown booster to Earth. This is the first flight for the second New Shepard reusable capsule, as well as the first flight for the second New Shepard reusable booster; both will be reused again.
Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor
The 801st episode of Doctor Who airs on BBC1 (the 103rd episode since the series’ revival). This is the show’s 50th anniversary special, starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, and John Hurt, with past Doctors putting in appearances via archive footage; Tennant’s co-star Billie Piper also appears, though not as Rose Tyler. This is the first episode since 1976 to feature the shape-shifting Zygons, and it adds a major plot twist to the Time War.
Star Trek Phase II: To Serve All My Days
The internet-based fan film Star Trek: Phase II releases its third full-length episode, To Serve All My Days. Walter Koenig guest stars as Chekov in a new script written by original Star Trek TV story editor D.C. Fontana.
Lost: Collision
ABC airs the 32nd episode of the J.J. Abrams-produced series Lost. Francois Chau guest stars.

STS-113 / ISS Expedition 6
Space Shuttle Endeavour lifts off on the 112th shuttle flight, a two-week mission to resupply and exchange crews at the International Space Station. Another structural tress to dissipate excess heat into space is assembled and attached. Aboard Endeavour for her 19th flight are Commander James Wetherbee, Pilot Paul Lockhart, mission specialists Michael Lopez-Alegria and John Herrington, and ISS Expedition 6 crewmembers Kenneth Bowersox, Nikolai Budarin and Don Pettit. Returning to Earth aboard the shuttle are Expedition 5 crewmembers Valeri Korzun, Peggy Whitson and Sergei Treschev.
This is the last successful shuttle mission for over two years.
Mary Whitehouse, media activist, dies
Mary Whitehouse, known for many years for her insistent outcries against sex and violence on British television – including a years-long war of words with various producers of BBC-TV’s Doctor Who – dies at the age of 91 (coincidentally, on the 38th anniversary of Doctor Who’s first broadcast). Many a Who producer has quietly echoed the thoughts of John Nathan-Turner, who has been known to say that he’d pray at night that Ms. Whitehouse would protest loudly about a recent episode of the show because it would draw public attention (and maybe ratings). Ms. Whitehouse is survived by three sons.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Pangs
The 64th episode of Joss Whedon’s supernatural series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, airs on the WB network. Anthony Stewart Head and Alyson Hannigan also star. David Boreanaz (Angel) guest stars.

20th Century Fox Film Scores releases a 4-CD set of John Williams’ soundtracks from Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, presenting more material than has appeared on any of the previous releases (but still not presenting the complete score to any one of the movies). An extensive liner notes booklet with contributions from Nicholas Meyer and Lukas Kendall is included.
Doctor Who: Silver Nemesis, Part 1
The 677th episode of Doctor Who airs on BBC1. This story, guest starring Anton Diffring and Fiona Walker, is the final original series Cybermen episode. Jazz great Courtney Pine and his band make a cameo appearance.

The Alan Parsons Project releases a remastered and revised edition of its first album, Tales of Mystery & Imagination, based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. For the first time, narration recorded in 1976 by Orson Welles is heard in the context of the album itself. This is the first time the album has been available on CD.
Doctor Who: The Five Doctors
The 602nd episode of Doctor Who airs on PBS television stations across America – the first Doctor Who story ever to premiere outside the UK – with British fans having to wait two days later to see it on BBC1. Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee reprise their roles as the second and third Doctors, with Richard Hurndall stepping into the role of the first Doctor. (Never-before-seen footage from the abandoned 1979 story Shada constitutes Tom Baker’s appearance as the fourth Doctor.) Numerous former companions of the various Doctors put in guest appearances as well, alongside Anthony Ainley as the Master. The special 90-minute story celebrates 20 years of Doctor Who.

Cosmos: The Lives Of The Stars
The ninth episode of Carl Sagan’s groundbreaking science documentary series Cosmos premieres on PBS. A popular history of science and scientific theory vs. tradition and superstition, segueing into Sagan’s field of expertise (astrophysics), Cosmos is a major milestone in American documentary filmmaking and the popularization of science and the scientific method (and makes an instant celebrity out of Sagan).
Monkey: Monkey Turns Nursemaid
The second episode of the English-dubbed Japanese action series Monkey premieres on BBC2, starring Masaaki Sakai. The series is a translation and dub of a fancifully satirical Japanese adaptation of the Chinese novel “Journey To The West”, guest starring Eishin Tono (Ultraman Taro) and Akihiko Hirata (Godzilla, Fugitive Alien, Atragon).
Captain America II: Death Too Soon
The TV movie-of-the-week Captain America II: Death Too Soon airs on CBS, starring Reb Brown, Len Birman, and Connie Sellecca. Christopher Lee guest stars. The ratings for this second Captain America TV outing are not strong enough for CBS to greenlight a series.

N1 Flight #4
The Soviet space program, still determined to reach the moon, again loads an unmanned Soyuz/Korabl capsule and lander combo onto the huge N1 rocket for another test launch. At an altitude of nearly 25 miles, the N1 experiences severe structural stresses and disintegrates in mid-air, effectively ending the Soviet drive for the moon. Another N1 is prepared for another launch, with an eye toward orbiting a massive space station with which to upstage the upcoming American Skylab station, only to be dismantled on the ground in favor of more reliable launch vehicles.

ITV airs the ninth episode of the mystery/spy-fi series Strange Report in the U.K., starring Anthony Quayle, Kaz Garas, and Anneke Wills (Doctor Who).
