Mars: Novo Mundo
National Geographic Channel premieres the first episode of Mars, a hybrid drama/documentary about a fictional human mission to Mars in 2033, contrasted against efforts to prepare for such a mission in the present day. The series is produced by Ron Howard (Apollo 13). This is the show’s broadcast/cable premiere, having premiered on the channel’s streaming service a week earlier.
Glen A. Larson, Battlestar Galactica creator, dies
A television producer with an improbably long list of mega-hit series, including the science fiction shows Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers In The 25th Century, The Six Million Dollar Man, Automan, and Knight Rider, Glen A. Larson dies of cancer at the age of 77. Larson’s long string of non-genre hits includes such series as Magnum P.I., Manimal, Quincy M.E., The Fall Guy, Alias Smith And Jones, and many others.
Doctor Who: Night Of The Doctor
The BBC debuts the Doctor Who minisode Night Of The Doctor on the internet, reintroducing Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor in his first on-screen appearance since the 1996 TV movie and depicting his apparent regeneration into a previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor, as played by John Hurt. The minisode debuts on McGann’s birthday, but was originally intended to premiere much closer to the 50th anniversary special, Day Of The Doctor, until it became apparent that word of McGann’s secretive return to Doctor Who was about to be leaked.
Arrow: Legacies
The sixth episode of Arrow, a modern-day reboot of DC Comics’ Green Arrow superhero starring Stephen Amell, airs on the CW.

Soyuz TMA-22
Part of the 29th full-time crew of the International Space Station lifts off from Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard Soyuz TMA-22. Anton Shkaplerov, Anatoli Ivanishin and Daniel Burbank take up residence on the ISS for 165 days, becoming part of the Expedition 29/30 crews. All three return to Earth in April 2012 aboard the same vehicle. This was the first Soyuz mission to the International Space Station following the end of the American space shuttle program.
Walking Dead: Tell It To The Frogs
Cable channel AMC premieres the third episode of The Walking Dead, a series based on the popular zombie comic of the same name.
STS-126
Space Shuttle Endeavour lifts off on a 15-day mission to the International Space Station, carrying more supplies and equipment than any previous shuttle flight bound for the station. Also on tap is a major spacewalk to repair part of the solar panel assembly on the station which allows it to track the sun. Aboard Endeavour for her 22nd flight are Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Eric Boe, and mission specialists Steve Bowen, Don Pettit, Shane Kimbrough, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Sandra Magnus. Magnus remains on the International Space Station, while ISS crewmember Greg Chamitoff returns from a six-month stint in space aboard the shuttle.
Sedna
Astronomers using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope announce the discovery a tiny planet, with a diameter of only 2,000 kilometers, orbiting the sun three billion kilometers past Pluto. That places it at an average ten billion kilometers away from Earth – with a solar year that lasts around 10,000 years. Sedna is also spotted from ground-based telescopes as well, using the initial observations made by the Spitzer Telescope; its diameter, only 300 kilometers less than that of Pluto, intensifies the “Pluto as a planet” debate that has been raging since the discovery of Quaoar.

Bridging the gap between Star Wars Episode II and Episode III, Cartoon Network premieres the sixth mini-episode of Genndy Tartakovsky’s The Clone Wars animated shorts.
