Disney buys Lucasfilm, Episode VII in works
Disney announces the purchase of Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4,000,000,000, simultaneously announcing that work will commence on Star Wars Episode VII for a 2015 release. George Lucas, having already stepped down as Lucasfilm chairman earlier in the year, is suddenly even more of a billionaire than he already was, and Disney gets the keys to the Star Wars franchise with plans for new movies “every 2-3 years.”

Soyuz TMA-1: the only ride in town
Russia launches a new variant of the venerable Soyuz spacecraft, Soyuz TMA-1, on a mission to the International Space Station. Cosmonauts Sergei Zalyotin and Yury Lonchakov and Belgian astronaut
Frank De Winne visit the ISS for 11 days, conducting experiments and bringing supplies to the station. This crew returns to Earth aboard Soyuz TM-34, leaving Soyuz TMA-1 at the ISS. When the space shuttle fleet is grounded early in 2003 after the Columbia disaster, Soyuz TMA-1, still berthed at the ISS, becomes the only ride home for the station’s sixth full-time crew.

In the best tradition of Orson Welles’ infamous War Of The Worlds radio broadcast, CBS airs a made-for-TV movie, Without Warning, depicting a slow-building attack on Earth as a series of newscasts. Starring real-life news personalities Sander Vanocur, Bree Walker and Warren Olney, mixed in with obvious actors such as John de Lancie, Gina Hecht and Jane Kaczmarek, Without Warning tricks many viewers – despite extensive on-screen notification that they are not viewing a real news event – into thinking that a real national emergency is underway. Welles would’ve been proud.
