Paul Weitz, astronaut, dies
Former NASA astronaut Paul J. Weitz dies at the age of 85 after battling cancer. Originally assigned to an Apollo lunar mission that was cancelled, Weitz’s first spaceflight was as the pilot of the first manned mission to the Skylab space station, which had suffered critical damage during launch. Weitz and crewmates Pete Conrad and Joe Kerwin had to undertake risky spacewalks to salvage the station, and stayed in orbit for 28 days, an endurance record in 1973. Weitz returned to orbit as the commander of Space Shuttle Challenger‘s first flight in 1983, and remained at NASA until 1994.

Soyuz TMA-06M
Part of the 33rd full-time crew of the International Space Station lifts off from Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard Soyuz TMA-06M. Oleg Novitskiy, Evgeny Tarelkin and Kevin Ford take up residence on the ISS for 143 days, becoming part of the Expedition 33/34 crews. All three return to Earth in March 2013 aboard the same vehicle.
Dollhouse: Belonging
The 16th episode of Joss Whedon’s futuristic “spy-fi” series Dollhouse airs on Fox, starring Eliza Dushku. Keith Carradine (Madam Secretary) guest stars in an episode directed by Jonathan Frakes. With ratings for the series faltering, Fox pulls Dollhouse from the schedule just before the November ratings sweeps; by the time new episodes resume in December, the series has been cancelled, but the remaining episodes will be “burned off” in December and January.

Battlestar Galactica Season 3 soundtrack
La-La Land Records releases Bear McCreary’s soundtrack from the third season of Sci-Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica reboot. The third season soundtrack CD includes the fan-requested Galactica version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”, which has become integral to the storyline.
STS-120
Space Shuttle Discovery lifts off on the 120th shuttle flight, a 15-day mission to deliver a new module to the International Space Station. The module in question is the Harmony node, which adds space for further modules to be added by future shuttle missions. Aboard Discovery for her 34th mission are Commander Pamela Melroy, Pilot George Zamka, mission specialists Douglas Wheelock, Scott Parazynski, Stephanie Wilson and Paolo Nespoli, and ISS Expedition 16 crewmember Daniel Tani, who remains on the station. Among the items stowed away aboard the shuttle are the screen-used lightsaber prop wielded by Luke Skywalker in Return Of The Jedi.
