Babylon 5Christopher Franke’s first wave of “episodic” soundtracks from the series Babylon 5 is released by Sonic Images Records. Individual CDs with the complete scores from the episodes Severed Dreams, A Late Delivery From Avalon, Walkabout, Shadow Dancing and Z’Ha’Dum are released.

STS-79: fourth Shuttle-Mir mission

Space ShuttleAfter multiple delays, including the entire launch stack having to be rolled back into the safety of the Vehicle Assembly Building to protect it from two back-to-back hurricanes, Space Shuttle Atlantis lifts off on the fourth mission to dock with the Russian Mir space station. Supplies are transferred to Mir, and numerous completed science experiments from Mir are loaded into the shuttle. Atlantis is flown by Commander William Readdy, Pilot Terrence Wilcutt, and mission specialists Thomas Akers, John Blaha, Jay Apt and Carl Walz. Blaha remains on Mir, taking the place of American astronaut Shannon Lucid, who has just set a new American space endurance record of 188 days in orbit; Lucid returns to Earth with the Atlantis crew.

The Cape: In Friends We Trust

TimecopThe second episode of the science fiction series The Cape premieres in syndication in North America, starring Corbin Bernsen (L.A. Law) and Adam Baldwin, and focusing on a fictionalized version of NASA’s shuttle program.

Art Of NoiseArt Of Noise releases its third album, In No Sense? Nonsense!. Now consisting only of Anne Dudley and J.J. Jeczalik, the group’s popular direction continues, with a cover of the Dragnet theme song (used heavily to promote a big-screen remake/spoof of the cop show starring Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks) and an instrumental from the Fat Boys’ movie Disorderlies, “Roller 1”.

Logan's RunWith a writing staff populated heavily with veterans of the quickly-cancelled The Fantastic Journey, CBS launches Logan’s Run as a television series, with the extended-length pilot episode roaring through the events of the 1976 movie in mere minutes! After only a few episodes, however, CBS schedules the lightweight sci-fi series against Monday Night Football, sealing its doom.
